  • michael haney is my uncle

  • @shontz49 I'm actually flattered you dressed your son as a white boy by dressing him in a suit. Very classy. Hehehe

  • to all the U of I students and alumni and future students there of... take pride in your school and never for get that u are Illini (strong people)

  • There is a difference in the traditions Yes the beat is Hollywoodbut it can be improved with help of the true culture. You show the images of other placesKansas City, going all the way to the U of I making a connection and then showing two individuals during the dance You do not show the dance 4 minutesfifty seconds That is it It Predates current day mascots It can be improved. Yet. Frank Fools Crow said when visiting a game giving the regalia "As long as it remains honorable,it is a good thing".
  • @Tigerhawk4748

And a few years ago, Frank Fools Crow's relatives asked the University of Illinois to return Fools Crow's regalia. Things change.

  • @byrdslover16 They do,but the tradition did not.

He saw it,unlike many who I have spoken to who are against it,stating they have been told"

Or in many cases, gone into games, with the idea of it being racist before hand, not giving it a fair shot.

Professor Kauffman of the University,in his efforts to ban the tradition, presented quite slanted material over a long period of time to the NCAA committee.

Yes, it does change, but I argue that it did due to, in this case, people being told what to beleive

  • @Tigerhawk4748 - The NCAA had been studying the issue for almost a decade. They did endless amounts of independent research. to think they only sought Professor Kauffman's views is ridiculous.

  • @byrdslover16 I really would like to see what process they went through. I state this, as they made a blanket statment, ban, and then allowed for appeals, instead of looking at things in a situational manner, thus giving a broader view. I am going of second hand information, but from what I understand I do not believe that it was given a fair shake, something like the report done for the University, well, would have been more accurate to both sides viewpoints I believe..

  • Out of all the sports teams and schools who use Native Americans as mascots I believe Illinois did it with the most respect. I find the fact that our nations capitals football teams mascot is "the redskins" repulsive. Redskin is a degrating term. But, U of I had premission and help form native tribes. Also, the Seminole tribe sued the NCAA when the NCAA tired to make UFS drop the Seminole mascot. Chief Illiniwek was trained to dance by Native Americans and his regalia made by them

  • @kclove121 - the dance was made up by the students who portrayed the Chief. there was never any "training". The regalia, however, was quite authentic, but as I mentioned earlier, the family of Chief Frank Fools Crow asked for the regalia to be returned. It was -- although under mysterious circumstances.

  • @byrdslover16 Incorrect.. There is a training procedure in the process. Through the audition, and after, aswell as being the assistant and attending some of the games while you prepare to take on the mantle yourself.

The family had every right, especially as they requested it AFTER he was forcibly retired..

  • Cultural Illiteracy and Culturally illiterate people are a remarkable this to watch. The opening Drum lession tells the whole story. We really do need to work on our National Cultural Health. Cleaning up Cultural Poisoning in Sports is a good place to start. I watch no team that supports cultural poisoning.

  • chief illiniwek forever... he can dance if he wants to. it makes me sick to my stomach to think about how we lost our beloved mascot. the halftime shows feel so empty without him. an 81 year tradition that meant so much to so many, ended because people have nothing better to do than make problems out of something as innocent as a school mascot. hail to the orange, hail to the blue. we will NEVER forget and will keep the chiefs legacy alive forever.

  • @addictedtoyouxo hahahaha ur precious mascot is dead hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • MUKWONAGO LOST ITS MASCOT WE'VE WON!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what song is that from 1:08 what team and the song name? if anyone know it would be greatly appreciated

  • @midgety1 It's the University of Illinois War Chant to get people pumped up at games

  • @chibearsfan313 nice thanks bro

  • @midgety1 - yes, it is performed by the University of Illinois band. It has no official title, although the drummers at the time called it "Indian".

  • @byrdslover16 someone had a great comment on another vid it went something like native american activists took away chief illiniwek, and a year later the official illini tribe gave back the right to have the chief perform once a year.. hhhhhmmmm... took something and gave it back.... i think there is a saying for that.....

  • Drop the Mascot. I dont think this is good diplomacy between the races. I find it highly offensive and disgusting that our country holds us in this light. Even in the days of peace no one cared to do anything. I hope someone changes these mascots in the future.

  • I live in Chicago and now that the Blakhawks are all over the newz because of there big win in the playoffs alot of idiots think its cool to walk around drunk ass hell in a headdress wotting. I can't belive what I'am seeing and even from my own friends, my name is Will and I am Potawatomi what am I suppose to tell my kids...vexed*

  • Whites deliberately exterminated Native Americans and caused a genocide in the country. Why is this so hard to believe.

  • @mindtrix00 It didn't start out as deliberate genocide, though that is definitely what it turned into. It started with the first settlers bringing foreign pathogens into North and South America--things the native peoples were not immune to, so this killed off a great deal of native people very quickly.

  • I can understand the hostility toward the white man pertinent to a superficial view. However, how can you blame the white man whom is socially inscribed with these ideologies surrounding the natives without being able to make up their own mind or have the capasity to change what they are indoctrinated by. All im saying is that the NEW white man is a victum of the past system and white man thought. Im sure if the new white man had the ability to decide for himself, natives would be appreciated.

  • i'm native american i'm not offended

  • @Jaylinkin I'm native American and i'm offended deeply your what we like call a white native your skin is red but your heart is white

  • @helldog134 in Cultural Health language they are called cultural Trairors. The jews called them collobrators. In Vietnam they had the same problem.

  • the last few commentors i like u all, bring em all fucking down, and jesus stupid ass white people in america GET THE FUCKING HINT OR GET THE FUCK OUT YOU FOREINGERS AINT WANTED HERE ANYWAYS

  • fucking white people i wish they get back there boats go home make me sick to know my people get kick around like this.i hate going American history class when i was high school fucking 2 page on native American history

  • I feel for the indian tribes and hurt that they have, and some of the logos that teams have should change to an actual portrayl of that tribe or indian. names can changed to if you want to actually "honor" the tribes

  • The only thing that needs to change in the world of Indian mascots is the Cleveland Indians logo because that is supposed to be a joke. The majority of the Indians who are asked really don't care about this shit, but the one's that do really stick out. However, its natural to talk about a name like the Redskins that's fine. But if anybody say's Chicago Blackhawks so help me I will find you.

  • @southparkfan2717 i already do and have

  • How can you claim to be honoring someone when you are consistently ignoring/ disregarding their wishes?

  • In Memory of Michael and Vernon, add Fern Mathias of Southern California AIM to the list. At one protest when asked about the mascot issue, I remember her saying "Don't tell us that you are honoring us- we'll let YOU know when you honor us." Rest knowing that we carry on the fight!

  • @jimlap4712 - thanks for mentioning Fern and Southern Cal AIM.

  • When I send my son out on Halloween as a white boy, I don't want anyone sayin' shit about his costume. He's the one in the suit and tie with a corn cobb up his ass.

  • Hey glfrboy, I simply don't know how to respond to your ignorance and ill informed defense of a practice that is hurtful to people. throughout your education, no one ever taught you how to think, apparently, nor how to have common courtesy to other citizens of our shared world. Here's a hint, just don't "try" to honor us.

  • @glfrby310 - actually, that is not true. The Peoria tribe still exist in Oklahoma. They were part of the loose confederation that were referred to as the Illinois Indians (or some say Illiniwek)

  • @glfrby310 GGGGGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CCCCCCHHHHHHHEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFF

  • @glfrby310 hey asswipe im a direcnt descendant of the illini, we'er the peorias and we're very much alive and no the ottawas didnt wipe us out or any mass retaliation of any sorts, our numbers reduced because of you people HA

  • what I find hilarious is that these people say that the University of Illinois mocks Indians when chief dances at halftime. The guy also says that chief demeans their culture and way of life.

  • I just saw this documentary in my Latina/Latino Studies class today. I am actually a student at the University of Illinois and this is a topic of great debate and controversy on campus. People don't seem to understand why students get offended and like they said in the video, some of these people actually think they are honoring American Indians.

  • Europeans like to make fools of themselves. Can't be original, copy other peoples ways, culture. So much for superiority..

  • and if its not fair to have inian names y are they allowed to use animal names

  • this is freakin stupid wat is wrong wit fsu's name, the seminole tribe loves the publicity and treats it as in honor to be apart of the university

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Captain. We are people with living cultures which are mocked in public venues at sporting events. You present the paid-off example of the Seminoles...politicians are the same no matter what color you paint them. So are people. When you step on someones toe in an elevator, you apologize, and try not to do it again. That's becaue you crossed their boundary and caused them a degree of pain. This is similar, only that it's a public humiliation, and is wrong. I hope this helps you understand.

  • ignorants

  • i am writing my thesis on the mascot debate. I recommend everyone see "In Whose Honor?"

  • thank you for putting up we're doing this in one of my college classes
