My grandmother was in the Hebrew Home for 2 years. They put her in room #1 out of over 800 rooms. That was because in her mid 90s she was in such amazing condition. She was in awe of the place and really appreciated being there. Her room was small and she had few belongings with her. That didn't seem to matter. As long as she could look at the pictures on the wall of her family. She probably cleaned out several residents playing poker. Great video! Shalom!
Herzl said, "if you will it, it is no dream." and these guys willed it. Kol ha cavod. They were amazing. A real uplifting video. Thanks for sharing x Shalom.
I was so moved by this video I cried. I haven't been to Israel since I was 16 months old. I have family there I have never even met. I want to go to the wailing wall. I lost my father just over a year ago and he was a holocaust survivor. I miss him. I want to leave a message at the wailing wall and I hope that one day I will go home, my home. I dream to go. Thank you my friend for sending me this link to this very special video. Thank you.
I am chvelling from these beautiful people...such a Mitzvah. I wish I could go now, at age 72, and take my 88 year-old spouse in his wheelchair. Do I dare to dream?
I am sitting and wiping away my tears. this was so beautiful. kol hakavod to whoever came up with this idea, and even more, to those who arranged it all.
I'm a 65 year young woman sitting here crying. This is a fabulous video; I'm so grateful my friend forwarded it to me. My dream is to go to Israel. We're actively saving for the trip!! No cruise and one day or several hour layover for us - we plan to visit for at least three weeks and see the sights.
We took my dad when he was around 85 in a wheelchair....his eyes were as big as saucers, he was so interested, happy, engaged...he went everywhere; we rented a motorized lightweight scooter wheelchair that fit in a rental van...Definitely trust it will work out - and you don't have to pack tons of meds and such, the country has modern everything, including pharmacies.
Maravilhoso - Yes, this should be right in all languages.. Live is the collection of so many people and places, is the memory of each one and of a whole people
My mom at age 96 spent the winter is Israel in 2009. none of her children were there, but she was surrounded by nieces and friends and had a wonderful time. how people age varies tremendously. there are plenty of elderly who could do a trip to israel, enjoy every second of it and be wonderful ambassadors as these folks have been.
It was indeed beautiful - dvorahquin I'm with you - Birthright did not exist when we were of the age. We all need to go - we need to return and support - perhaps we will be a voice as our ancestors were. May the spirit of those in this film entice us to be like them. They have seen the horrors of Hitler and his Muslim partners and they have seen the anti-semitism of the US as well (which is similar to what is going on now).
Cried my eyes out watching this! Kol hakavod! I hope I am as clear headed and vibrant as some of the beautiful seniors featured. Proves its never too late to live your life.
I just learned that my great-grandmother, Sarah Tenenbaum, was on of the founders of this home. My brother now has the portrait of her that used to hang in the lobby. Seeing this inspiring video makes me proud of my ancestry, even more so than before. Kudos to Oranim for making this trip possible. Visiting Israel is one of my greatest hopes; perhaps some day I'll be able to afford to go. Oranim! You have free trips for the young and free trips for the aged. What about us middle-aged folks?
What an uplifting video this is!! My father was a resident of the Hebrew Home in Riverdale for 18 months in 1989-90. The care he received was excellent. it is a pleasure to see the joy on these people's faces-- I had tears in my eyes as I watched. Thank you!
My Bubba and Zaida were residents at The Hebrew Home at Riverdale, 50 years ago...from the early 60's until my grandmother passed away in 1972. My grandfather passed away in 1966. I believe they were the first married couple to live in their own room, at the Home. My aunt was there until she passed away, in 2005. It now contains a world class museum, and photos of the immigration.
This trip is another confirmation to me of how exceptional The Hebrew Home For the Aged was and is. Thank You.
Universal Jewish Encyclopedia: "The primary meaning of Ashkenaz and Ashkenazim in Hebrew is Germany and Germans. This may be due to the fact that the home of the ancient ancestors of the Germans is Media, which is the Biblical Ashkenaz... Krauss is of the opinion that in the early medieval ages the Khazars were sometimes referred to as Ashkenazim... About 92 percent of all Jews or approximately 14,500,000 are Ashkenazim."
Soooo nice to see so many familiar faces... I was working at the Home when they went on the Chutzpah Mission and I still feel a tremendous sense of pride when I watch this video! Thanks for posting it...
What an awesome group of people! I love them all and am so glad they were able to visit their homeland. This is very inspirational! Thanks for posting this!!!
I have the HONOR of living in Jerusalem. So happy you made the visit.

Thanks for a beautiful, inspiring video.
I agree with dvorahquin: Oranim ought to offer free trips for middle-aged people as well, because Birthright didn't exist when we were younger.
