  • AB misses the point of a beautiful vodka martini, which is that it doesn't impose its opinion on the drink the way gin does. Vodka is cleaner.

  • Love that

  • Dark or Spiced rum, imo, should only be drank straight. And I've actually mixed spiced rum into Daiquiri's before. He's right, it tastes like a cat walking on a piano.

  • His character in thest segment was over the top obnoxious! It really casts southern gentlemen in a bad light. Drink is good though.

  • I never joke about my work 007! *pushes ejector seat*

  • James Bond lovers unite! He preferred his drink (the Vesper) to be made from Gin, Vodka, Kina Lillet instead of Vermouth with a lemon peel instead of an olive!

But he also drank both Gin and Vodka martinis, usually dry and made with grain as opposed to potatoes given the chance.

  • I love the "Col Sanders" he does at the end. That alone makes me want to try a mInt julip (and I don't even care for whiskey)

  • Goddammit, I love you Alton Brown.

  • Of all people, I would think that AB would have known you aren't supposed to put gin in a metal mixer.

  • @atrain118 Why not??

  • @atrain118 Gin absorbs metal flavors. For someone who is all about subtle flavors, I figured he would've known that.

  • @atrain118 Do you have a source on this? Gin is made from neutral grain spirits - in a metal still and since it's not highly acidic, it's not like foods that taste "off" (eg. tomatoes cooking in an aluminum pot) as most tumblers or mixing tumblers are stainless steel.

  • Alton Brown really does have a perfected Southern accent.

  • @Goldenrod636, he is from the South, after all.

  • @b3ans4eva He's from LA - a short stint in one of his schools in the South.

  • @C5Rigzz, thanks for correcting me.

  • Colonel Boatwright sounds a bit like Little Richard.

  • Colonel Boatwright is a little creepy in this episode...

  • 2:30---"GOLDFINGER" reference. XD

  • he was usin russell's reserve bourbon

  • Alton Brown sounds like Bill Cosby when he his doing his southeren gentlemen impersonation.

  • he's using Gilbey's Gin.. YUK!!!

  • "don't want a dirty muddler hangin' 'round your kitchen!"

    XD

  • @AraBrokenGoddess Well, to be fair, I think he's going for a Georgia accent, not an Alabama one. It's exaggerated and not the most flawless I've heard, but as a Southerner, I found it amusing. Just my opinion, though. :-)

  • @faustinesea I understand that, but I didn't think there was quite such a difference between Bama and Georgia. It was amusing the first time, but after that it got old. Like you, it's just an opinion. -Ara

  • I love watch Good Eats when I'm in a bad mood. It cheers me up so much!

  • I always drink Gin Martini's because I don't like vodka. It makes me loopy and very ill.

  • ...yet you're still drinking vodka. ;)

Gin is made from vodka. Perhaps you're just enjoying the benefits of a quality of gin that sits well with you.

I love gin martinis too. Cheers!

  • That is also true!

  • This has to be one of my favorite episodes. Classic AB without the silliness that sometimes overwhelms the show, and the background music is great.

  • The colonel seemed llike an ass to me!

    But AB wasn't.

  • lol... the high-tech ejection button under the bar has an old-school Astro label on it.

  • Though shaking up and down makes you look like a jerk, it is rather amusing XD

  • TaelosX: You're COMPLETELY missing the point, man. As you said, he's a TV host--and this is a cooking show, not a bar!

In many, MANY episodes, Alton Brown will tell you what's usually done, then tells you how he prefers doing it and why.

He just happened to present how he makes martinis as bartending for James Bond. It's just to make the show entertaining, not as a display of how Alton would REALLY act as a bartender!

    Yeesh.

  • In other words, as someone once joked to me, Bond couldn't make a drink to save his life.

  • I think It'd be cool if he did a show on Non-alcoholic cocktails.

  • that defeats the purpose there are enough drinks that are non alcoholic as it is. and he did a show on punch

  • non alcoholic wtf is wrong with u.

  • Comment removed

  • If you really want non-alcoholic beverages that AB's investigated, look at his tea, coffee, soda, smoothies, shakes and juice cocktails. He's done eggnog, too. But this is my favorite episode, even though i can't drink legally yet, and while not all people may like booze, it's good to know how to treat it! The best advice he gives in this episode is on the sizes of the glasses, recommending a 6oz rather than a booming 12/14oz martini.

  • You forgot simple syrup

  • Comment removed

  • one of his best episodes by far

  • Gotta love the Bond jokes.

  • does anyone else notice how he never really stops talking whenever he uses that colonel disguise?

  • It's Alton Brown, he never stops talking at all :P

  • @heyidaroo It's not annoying like with Rachael Ray though

  • true but it's funnier than hell!

  • Kentucky Fried Colonel Bob!!!!

But I do hate sweet alcohol though. Yuk!

  • whooo colonel bob!

  • BEST GOOD EATS EPISODE

  • i am not worthy of you oh great a.b.

  • 2:28-2:31----Nice "Goldfinger" reference. LOL!!!

  • The issue is that when a recipe calls for simple syrup, and you use a 2-to-1 ratio of sugar to water, you get double the sugar in the drink, which isn't what you want to happen.

You're absolutely right, the important aspect is that he showed how to cook it, but it is important for drink recipes to know the difference between simple and rich syrup.

Please realize I'm not harping on Alton, I think he is the greatest thing on TV (Good Eats is BY AND FAR my favorite show on TV)

  • I absolutely love AB, but simple syrup for cocktail making is 1-to-1 sugar to water. A 2-to-1 ratio would make a "rich syrup" not a huge difference, just nomenclature.

Thanks for having such an incredible show Alton, you're the reason I still watch FN

  • it doesn't matter. he was referring to how to cook it and simple syrup is simple syrup no matter how you cook it.

    :)

  • A little extra sugar never hurt anyone

  • lol i love the accent, its fades and comes back at the oddest times

  • YA i love mr brown southern side! it rocks

  • viva la reva-lu-cion

    lol

  • Im sorry it just went off.

    HAH YES

  • I love Colonel Bob

  • OMG! OLD SOUTHER BROWN AGAIN! :D

  • can i use the pestle form the mortar and pestle instead of the muddler?

  • I would think so. They're basically the same thing.

  • Bond James Bond

    HaHa

  • alton brown is god

  • @blugirlsirop

I bet he was already drunk by the end of the episode!
