Dark or Spiced rum, imo, should only be drank straight. And I've actually mixed spiced rum into Daiquiri's before. He's right, it tastes like a cat walking on a piano.
James Bond lovers unite! He preferred his drink (the Vesper) to be made from Gin, Vodka, Kina Lillet instead of Vermouth with a lemon peel instead of an olive!
But he also drank both Gin and Vodka martinis, usually dry and made with grain as opposed to potatoes given the chance.
@atrain118 Do you have a source on this? Gin is made from neutral grain spirits - in a metal still and since it's not highly acidic, it's not like foods that taste "off" (eg. tomatoes cooking in an aluminum pot) as most tumblers or mixing tumblers are stainless steel.

As a girl who has spent a summer in Alabama, his accent annoys me, and annoys my Southern Grandma. Put Colonel Brown out o pasture and give us the modern day quirk we all know and love so much!
@AraBrokenGoddess Well, to be fair, I think he's going for a Georgia accent, not an Alabama one. It's exaggerated and not the most flawless I've heard, but as a Southerner, I found it amusing. Just my opinion, though. :-)
@faustinesea I understand that, but I didn't think there was quite such a difference between Bama and Georgia. It was amusing the first time, but after that it got old. Like you, it's just an opinion. -Ara
TaelosX: You're COMPLETELY missing the point, man. As you said, he's a TV host--and this is a cooking show, not a bar!
In many, MANY episodes, Alton Brown will tell you what's usually done, then tells you how he prefers doing it and why.
He just happened to present how he makes martinis as bartending for James Bond. It's just to make the show entertaining, not as a display of how Alton would REALLY act as a bartender!
If you really want non-alcoholic beverages that AB's investigated, look at his tea, coffee, soda, smoothies, shakes and juice cocktails. He's done eggnog, too. But this is my favorite episode, even though i can't drink legally yet, and while not all people may like booze, it's good to know how to treat it! The best advice he gives in this episode is on the sizes of the glasses, recommending a 6oz rather than a booming 12/14oz martini.
The issue is that when a recipe calls for simple syrup, and you use a 2-to-1 ratio of sugar to water, you get double the sugar in the drink, which isn't what you want to happen.
You're absolutely right, the important aspect is that he showed how to cook it, but it is important for drink recipes to know the difference between simple and rich syrup.
Please realize I'm not harping on Alton, I think he is the greatest thing on TV (Good Eats is BY AND FAR my favorite show on TV)
I absolutely love AB, but simple syrup for cocktail making is 1-to-1 sugar to water. A 2-to-1 ratio would make a "rich syrup" not a huge difference, just nomenclature.
Thanks for having such an incredible show Alton, you're the reason I still watch FN
AB misses the point of a beautiful vodka martini, which is that it doesn't impose its opinion on the drink the way gin does. Vodka is cleaner.

His character in thest segment was over the top obnoxious! It really casts southern gentlemen in a bad light. Drink is good though.

Of all people, I would think that AB would have known you aren't supposed to put gin in a metal mixer.
atrain118 1 year ago
@atrain118 Why not??
knoshy 1 year ago
@atrain118 Gin absorbs metal flavors. For someone who is all about subtle flavors, I figured he would've known that.

I always drink Gin Martini's because I don't like vodka. It makes me loopy and very ill.

...yet you're still drinking vodka. ;)
Gin is made from vodka. Perhaps you're just enjoying the benefits of a quality of gin that sits well with you.
I love gin martinis too. Cheers!
