  • whitesnake?

  • che dire...

  • Not even Jimmy Page can match the ferocity of John Sykes.

  • Jimmy Page: a guitarist so overrated the keyboardist had to play the solo in this song. Utterly laughable...

  • @daemonchild1977

Why would you call Jimmy Page overrated and Utterly laughable? Jimmy Page is how old here? Its not his song, or his style. He did his fair share with Led Zeppelin. Who gives a shit if he doesnt play a Whitesnake 100%.

  • @tommy81296 sure it's his style, haha,, he's just older, and not used to the faster chops of whitesnake, , dont forget , Coverdale, made this song, from Zeppelin,, it's basically, Black Dog" backwards if you listen, they even admit that in interviews

  • So saw some comments from almost a year ago, talking about solo's being about emotion and not speed, well, the only way to clearly explain Sykes solo for this song, is sex in audible form. He shreds in it yes, but its not mindless, it's all in a groove, 100% passion bleeding out of Sykes fingers. I was really let down by this. Page is a legend, and has created some of the most wonderful music any of us will hear on guitar, but he has too much hype as a guitarist over all.

  • I love Page, and I loved this version of the song for the most part. But I was wondering how he would handle the fast shredding part of the solo, and as I suspected, he didn't play it that way...but it still worked.

  • What does it all matter anyway? Page is the architect of this kind of music and doesn't necessarily need a whammy bar every time he plays. Merry Christmas people, now lets enjoy the new year without quibbling shall we!

  • No doubt of Pages place in history as a guitar god etc& influence on other players etc,but this is fucking crap, although better than Adrian Vandenburgs attempts at it.Always thought apart from drummer ,Zep were over-rated especially Page, never ,ever understood the fuss & still don't !Paul KOSSOFF,Gary Moore,Brian Robertson, Piss all over him in their respective primes,in my view,Agree with ZaKK Wylde comment, totally ripped Sykesy off!

  • Where is Sykes pinch harmonics at in this version?

  • the guitar solo SUCKS ASS

  • Page loves these full stops and rock on moments in songs....crazy old crow. Robert Plant, Ronnie James Dio † and Coverdale.....the best rock voices of the 20 th century.

  • @Za7a7aZ you geta thumbs UP = mainly cause u mentioned PLANT & DIO (rip) in the same sentence !

David is plenty good also !

  • Great comments guys....all true....if Jimmy stayed with Coverdale they would have wrote more great records together. Plant was very envious of this collaboration and that is why he broke it up in 94 when he initiated the unplugged deL on MTV with Page.as many have said in the past, Robert Plant is the most important person that walks into a room until Jimmy Page walks in. The Coverdale/Page record was Page's beat work since Presence

  • Page is in tremendous form and appears to be able to play anything he wants...

You can see Coverdale absolutely adores performing with Page and especially singing the Zeppelin catalog; as opposed to Plant, who obviously dreads singing the songs that made him famous.

If Pagey had only given this time, Coverdale would have settled down his stage antics and they could have breathed life into these classics and then who knows????

  • coverdale said in 1993 he had worked on this riff with blackmore in deep purple its in a kerrang mag. how much of it was changed about i dont know

  • he looks undressed in that tee shirt page always had the coolest clothes real classy stuff

  • dirty song needs a dirty peavey from vandenberg, gibson not quite the right sound

  • @jinkazamamonkey I think you mean to say from Sykes, not Vandenberg. It was probbaly recorded on a Gibson Les Paul

  • Actually the riff is very Page in nature. One could very easily imagine the song appearing on a Zepp album with Plant, Jones and Bonzo flailing away at it. In fact, Whitesnake was a Zepp clone band like so many others. All those guys idolized Page and the mighty Zepp. And yes, navgearhead is right...it's raw and primal...which was Page's whole tone thing. BTW politicalanimity is right on. Music expresses and evokes emotion...that is all that matters. Speed is for shit and usually sounds like it.

  • Its so obvious Jimmy Page cant do this song justice to save his life. Is WAAAAAY beyond his skill level..

  • @Robocop80s you're kidding, right?

  • you can see Page , just keeping up with the changes and up beat tempo , kinda borderline thrash , in a way, so it was great excersize for Jimmy, and he did play it note for note, Page was very smart and made his mark in perfect timing , otherwise we would have never heard of him, or the yardbirds, or zeppelin, no wonder he is dubbed the God Father of Rock n Roll,

  • @frankenboston Note for note? Umm ok. Page as great as he is is does not nor has ever had perfect timing. He is not even clean. Sorry but I disagree.

  • I COULD SWEAR i heard coverdale say many years ago that:

THIS SONG was derived from the "BLACK DOG" riff played backwords !

  • Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT. Wish I had been at the concert.

  • All I can say is that there would not be a John Sykes playing the guitar if there was not a Jimmy Page to surely influence him and thousands of other guitar players. I would go on record and say that Mr. Page has probably influenced more guitar players than anyone else in the history of Rock and Roll.

  • @lzzoso i would say that is a pretty accurate comment.

  • Page tore this song a new asshole.

  • You guys are right on point. Page can't even pull off the opening riff. Very over rated guitar player. Sykes is a amazing guitarist.

  • ...what's in store?????

  • incredible

  • I love this. Thought it sounded great with JP! Thank you for uploading it.

  • Page should've got his bow out - that would have sealed it.

    In totally the wrong way.

  • this tour had one awesome setlist

  • this version is too fast , has lost the groove !

  • Page playing STILL OF THE NIGHT. AWESOME!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Whooaa... Sykes is a page clone?? If anything, Sykes is one of the most original sounding guitarists in style and actual sound!

Slash is a heavier more sleazy rock version of Page. Zakk Wylde is a watered down version of Sykes. Sykes is absolutely NOT a copy of any guitarist out there.

This song doesn't make sense with Page playing it.

That's like having Van Morrison play Holy Wars.

He could, I'm sure, but it doesn't make sense...

  • @mgdth502 Rock n roll doesn't need rhyme or reason. Says AcDc anyways. ;]

  • @mgdth502 One thumbs up for you, sir. It still sickens me to this day that Sykes has not been given his due, and that so many people that like the 1987 Whitesnake album don't know or care who he is or what he contributed to the songwriting and guitar playing talent on that album.

  • @daviddedu Hahahahah HAHAHAHAHA HHOOO HOO HOO HOO HAHAHAHA

Gilbert and Vai my fucking balls!

  • this reminds me of that commercial where that old black guy says the ladies love whitesnake and if you love the ladies by the default you like whitesnake..lol well Ive been listening to john Sykes and vandenburg.. jimmy page

  • Wow. Jimmy rocked this song seriously.

  • The solo almost sounds alot like the Wanton song , in the begining

  • At this point, jimmy, JPJ, and Jason Bonham should tell Percy to stick it and then go on tour with david coverdale. If you saw Page/Plant in the 70's or 90's, then you know Jimmy is the real star. This is coming from a Plant fan!

  • @asher954

I agree. Love Robert Plant. But...If he's not available. another 70's great was.

  • All I said when I heard this was "JIMMY PAGE!!!"

  • this sounds frickin incredible!!!

  • Jimmy Page laughs at stuff like this.

  • I like it! But what happened to Sykes' solo?

  • i liked a lot this version too, page did it so well in other genre.

  • Vai procurar o que fazer mew! Cara que canta Jesus!!!!

  • "Still of the Night" is one of my favorite Whitesnake songs, I love the energy the song has, and the breakdown just sends chills through me when I hear it. I love the way Page plays the song, but he just doesn't play with as much depth as Sykes, but it's still a great fucking song to listen to! I really love how page plays the breakdown!

Though "Still of the Night" was inspired by Led Zeppelin, but calling it a copy/ripoff is just absurd.

  • Simply great Rock'n'Roll!

  • fucking awful !!!

death to david cover - version.

can you get more echo on a voice??

    kill cover - version !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Page is not capable in playing that Sykes solo. Page is over the hill I guess. Never really understood what was all the fuzz about with this guy. Sure he came up with some dynamite riffs but he is not much of a virtuoso at all. He has always played very sloppy,

  • @AWGMJANS He's playing like Page. Sykes was just a Page clone.

  • @chewbacca999 R U kiding! Sykes is 10 times a better guitarist then Page...

  • @AWGMJANS than page though i don`t agree

  • @AWGMJANS better ? who says ? That depends what you like doesn't it ? Who is a bettr painter , Picasso or Van Gogh ? It depends what you like to look at .

  • @AWGMJANS Go fuck yourself.

  • @AWGMJANS Play better mister guitar mastah.

  • @AWGMJANS The keyboard is doing the solo in that part

  • @Xiolablu3 Why do you think the keyboard plays the solo? ,,,

  • @AWGMJAN virtuosity can never take the place of feel and tone

  • @AWGMJANS Page is technically not that amazing of a guitarist if you want to boil it down to raw talent and skill. He's original, and one of the most amazing rock producers of all time. Not to mention one of the greatest rock songwriters of all time. That is why he sounds so stellar on the Led Zeppelin albums. Page in his heyday couldn't play the Sykes solo, though...Sykes is of a newer era of technical prowess. The solo sounds like it was handled by the keyboardist.

  • @Politcalamity Page couldnt play sykes in all his heyday, ya good luck buddy! Why don't you go watch the song remains the same..

  • @GrantGuides I have watched it. Multiple times. I never said I wasn't a Jimmy Page fan. I'm saying Page couldn't in his heyday play a John Sykes speed solo. And why would he? Page in his heydey and Sykes in his heyday are two completely different eras of guitar evolution. You're taking it as an insult to Page, which it is not. It's like saying a stock 1964 Mustang with a 289 V8 could outrun a stock 2004 Mustang with a 4.6L V8.

  • @Politcalamity This is true, but I'm pretty damn sure Page could play one of those solos quite well...

  • @GrantGuides Jimmy Page, from the Song Remains the Same era, could not do the rising arpeggio in the Still of the Night solo. Different playing style altogether. VERY few guitarists on earth can do that solo, in fact, the only other guitarist I have heard execute that solo accurately besides Sykes is Doug Aldrich. I'm pretty sure you're wrong. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

  • @Politcalamity My friend can play it...So good luck with that one? And since Jimmy Page is far more skilled than my friend, and since my friend has only been playing for a few years and Jimmy has been playing for...What? 45 years? Riiighhtt....Im pretty damn sure Jimmy Page could do it buddy.

  • @GrantGuides Then maybe your friend should upload a youtube video of him playing the ascending arpeggio in the Still of the Night solo, and playing it accurately, because otherwise, such a claim sounds contrived.

I don't understand why you can't just leave it at -- You like Page for your own reasons, I like him for my own reasons.

  • @Politcalamity Well one last thing. Sykes isnt even a different playing style, Page played like 10 different styles perfectly and clearly hes playing this 80's metal style here with coverdale, and even he admits that Page is the most talented man hes ever met, playing wise and producing wise. Hes a genius overall. Not only that, but im pretty sure theres a reason why in all the greatest guitar solo articles, Stairway to heaven is number 1 for all of them.

  • @GrantGuides Do you actually play guitar? "Sykes isnt even a different playing style" is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, and most experienced electric guitar players familiar with the two guitar players would agree with me.

  • @Politcalamity Yeah I do, to be honest, and how is this ridiculous? Clearly in the video Page is playing Sykes's songs

  • @GrantGuides the immigrant song was as heavy as this song and that was like 1973.....page was playing these monster type riffs with zeppelin years before....

  • @mojopin70

Thank you for your comment that I made a pretty accurate statement saying that Jimmy Page has influenced mor e guitar players EVER. John Sykes included. However, I must correct you and say that "Immigrant Song" was released on Led Zeppelin III back in 1970. "Houses of the Holy" was released in 1973. Keep on Rockin!!!

  • @Politcalamity ARE YOU KIDDING ME ? i know several really great guitarist on our local circuit & ive even heard a few of them cover this song >>>>lick for lick VERY well !

IF THEY CAN DO IT >>> im pretty sure pagey can !

    **** DAAAAHHH! ****

  • @Politcalamity NO ! page is like a:

1970 BUICK GSX 455 stage 1 with ALL the official stage 2 performance parts !

that can STILL take anything out there !

    BESIDES:

a solo is about emotion NOT ALL about speed !

BTW, this song was derived from the black dog riff played backwards & the bridge is part of the immigrant song!

sykes knows, you know & i know = if you cant put together somthing NEW & ORIGINAL then you MUST bowdown =

    TO THE ORIGINAL MASTER !

  • @z1inspector Tell that to the person that was arguing with me, I agree with you. My point wasn't that Page wasn't a master, because he is in his genre. He paved the way for people like Sykes. Without Page, there wouldn't have been a Sykes.

  • jimmy page wearing a jimmy page shirt cool as hell

  • ironic to see jimmy with coverdale,

    but-

it's definately a form of rock and roll adultry, lol, cheating on Robert

  • what's weird is even though Page didn't literally write this tune, he kinda already did, it's just zeppelin re-incarnated in a way, so it's just ironic that page is playing it, it's already his cup of tea so to speak,, i love Page, and always loved deep purple , sabbath, with, without coverdale, their all such talent.

  • @frankenboston DUDE !I COULD SWEAR i heard coverdale say many years ago that:

THIS SONG was derived from the "BLACK DOG" riff played backwords !

  • @z1inspector lol,, i would not doubt that for a second, lol, funny,

  • @z1inspector and the bridge is just the immigrant song too , lol,, it's all Zeppelin-esk

  • @frankenboston ha ha ha ! is it really ? now THATS funny /but fine with me & I DO love this song !

  • @z1inspector it sound a little like it, listen to the immigrant song youll hear it, just a small part of still OFT ,

  • David Coverdale is and always will be the greatest singer/frontman of all times!

  • He is very good, but you've obviously never heard of a guy by the name of Robert Plant, or Mick Jagger and a few others in front of mr coverdale.

  • i wish they had toured the us.I would have loved to see this

  • The Jimmy Page tone is so original that you can just be mesmorized by the sound of his guitar alone.

  • This version sounds more raw than Whitesnake's....I like....I LIKE ALOT!!!!!!

  • You are absolutely right, I always liked this riff myself i can see why Jimmy did too.

  • @navgearhead, you got it. At one point I thought the song was a re-recording, so I figured like all the Whitesnake re-recordings the original would shit all over the glammed up re-recording but I had no original :(

  • Jimmy Page can adapt to alot of different styles!! LEGEND

  • Don't know if it's true or not but...I heard Jimmy wanted to play this one cuz he thought it was a fantastic song.

  • its weird to see page playing this.. its so diferent from his style in led zeppelin.

    Still it sounds great

  • yeah but it is his style, it's progressive rock, or metal,, it's all relative,, it's almost to weird, or ironic to see jimmy with coverdale, it's definately a form of rock and roll adultry, lol, cheating on Robert Plant, lol !!

  • @xXHuggensXx well its principally heavy blues/rock so page knows how to do this with his eyes closed...

  • @xXHuggensXx Still of the Night is 100% inspired by Led Zeppelin, mostly by songs like Whole Lotta Love

  • @xXHuggensXx Yeah but notice he doesn't hit any of the pinch harmonics? I bet he doesn't even know how!! haha. The 70's style isn't half as good or slick like the 80's guitar slingers

  • Plant wanna-be.

  • ...Fucking awesome!!!!!!

  • nice!
