@MsWarumono Not really the same? then you really need to check my HM300 video, it sounds only a tiny bit different to me, both pedals are totally incomparable, the HM-2 is noisier, has more low end, the HM300 is tighter, harsher, less noisy and more aggressive to my ears, but that classic buzzsaw is still there!
dude behringer its great im going to get my second tommorow online, but i had the occasion to see a really old HM-2 in action and all i cant say there is a slight difference don't know how to say it well but it sounds more stable.anywayz digitech has done a death metal pedal and ddt too but its not the swedish sound.Cheers support old school death metal! \m/
@pyre4 yeah well i know a guy in the Us so he can check it for me and send it where i live..but i also can get decent distorsion with boss ds-1 , Zoom g2 and my behringer hm 300, not really the same as hm 2 but it works fine for now.Cheers
I've done a demo of this Pedal on my channel now, not mixed very well but you can hear that Buzzsaw tone that this pedal is known for, It's now a part of my sound and I can't stop using it, I'm an enthusiast now XD
i have an hm-2 that should be delivered soon. i really wish i didnt have to pay 100$+ for a second hand pedal.. still worth it but it would be nice to get em for around $50 like most used boss pedals.
I have had this pedal sitting in a drawer for the last 15 years. I got it from a friend and messed around and never found a sound I liked. Guess I should get it back out and give it another try, maybe I wasn't tweaking the knobs right.
@dontdissheavymetal This is true, but to be honest most people that use it now are only after that one specific sound. It's all the in the EQ settings that make so appealling. Try rolling all the gain off on the pedal but keeping everthing else up to full and put it on against your own distortion from your amp, works in such a beautifuly EVIL way. Thanks for posting all the same ;)\m/.
@BenPigIron I agree. I use this gain level when it just slightly starts to distort a little and it makes my amp sound like an old school Marshall. a very unique sounding pedal compared to the other boss distortions. most people don't know that the gain does not change at all past a certain point around 3 o'clock. I don't use it for metal. It is a kick ass pedal.. love the eq on this baby.
@dontdissheavymetal Depends on the amp your using for sure. it sounds like shit in some of my amps but other it is fantastic. not just metal cruch. David Gilmour used this pedal on some recordings and on tour.
@dontdissheavymetal I love this pedal. found one on craigs list for $20.00 but the same condition on ebay is almost $200.00. a collectors pedal for sure. even if they did reissue (and they won't) it will never sound as good becuse of the old Japanese op amp chips were used and they are not making those anymore. too bad. The Boss analog delay goes for $350.oo on Ebay too. You think someone over at Boss would get a fucking clue of what people want. Old Jap pedals are better
my dad had one gathering dust, i started playing about :99 he gave me it just as i started geting into swedish bands... it looks done in but sounds amasing.... good enough to record the left hand path then its good enough to stay in my set up.... i want that tshirt .p
Haha I got my HM-2 and it's from November 1984 :D
I laught when I typed in the serial number in the boss serial number decoder and it's awesome. Maybe I'm going to take a look what It can do for me right now. Do you know any Europe Modders?
I managed to track down 2 of those pedals but I was too late to buy any of them, and I want one so fucking bad :( Is it really that difficult to just pick up the good old trusty blueprint and start to manufacture it again?
@swedisheinherjer If you just made it for yourself and didn't attempt to sell it, there's a blueprint/schematic available if you simply search Boss HM-2.
But that still only helps a select few people. I haven't the time to build. Luckily, I have two HM-2s already.
I 100% support you.I'm lucky enough to own a mij hm2 but there are alternatives I've found a keeley modded ds1 into a mt2"works" as does an ampeg scrambler clone into an h&k warp factor. The much derided Behringer hm300 is ALMOST there but with a Behringer Superfuzz(awesome fun)before it is glorious!Until fuzz builders take pity on us we need ebay but the schematics are out there folks!...Btw Dod reissue the buzzbox and meatbox and digitech the space station even for a short run please. Thanks!
Hello everyone, HM2 is a legendary pedal, but if you just want to get the same tone, Behringer HM300 does the same thing. While HM300 looks stupid and does not have the same old-school feeling, the sound, the tone and the functions are 100% the same. It's awesome!
@shibaduba00 This pedal might be extinct too soon as Behringer are not in a good way at the moment :(. Grab them while you can. Better still, get the real deal with the HM-2\m/. Thanks for the post.
I managed to track down a HM-2 after spending ages of finding one, I finally scored a Taiwan model. I'm positive that the 'issues' are just corksniffery.
I fell in love with the HM-2 sound when I had a Boss GT6 (made in Taiwan) where I got the perfect Opeth MAYH tone. I just really want a nice Doom growl that's a little different to my current sound, I won't be using the pedal for my primarily gain sound - that's what my amp is for. But having the HM used as a boost might be my ultimate tone.
I have played a mij some time before. The Taiwan model is still VERY similar sounding, but I had to roll down the High knob slightly under max to make it sound a little less harsh. It seems that the HM-2 reacts with each amp very differently, a lot of people dismiss them before they have the right amp to play through. All knobs at max isn't always the right tone, you can still sound like Entombed if you EQ correctly.
@hillysats Not at all, your just adapting to your set up. the important thing is that your using this glorious pedal and flying the flag. Keep it up :).
@hillysats I found out recently that if you scoop pretty much all the gain on the pedal to zero and the level and colour mix full that you can keep the power and drive of your amp the way you like it and just use the HM-2 as a filter to colour your already established drive sound (much more controlable when it comes to the feedback you would get from the gain on the pedal up to the max).
Its all a case of experimenting and finding out what works with your setup.
HM-2 was my first pedal, used it for hard rock in late 80's early 90's , I missed having it so I found one on craigslist and got it back for freaking $20.00! the guy didn't know what he had.great condition. I would love it to come back with a little more tone control to get heavy bluesy/ hard rock tones as well as the metal. Back in the day I used it with AMPEG VH140 head and 4X12 It was so freaking loud and heavy. GREAT PEDAL
I can get behind this 100%.. I gotta say theres really no difference between the Taiwan and Japanese ones though. My first one I bought in 1999 BRAND NEW at a music store (it was still in the box under the counter!!).. Few years ago I got a 1984 japanese model off ebay.. About the only difference was the japanese one is a bit heavier and sturdier feeling. Soundwise they were both the same gnarly Godflesh sounding beast.. That tone circuit still baffles me though.. I think thats its big secret..
I want one of these pedals, but there is absolutely no difference of tone between the Japanese and Taiwanese versions of the HM-2, the quality of components between the 2 are debateable, the difference between the Boss DS-1 japanese and taiwanese pedals is very different because the original op-amp got discontinued, don't get me started on the MT-2 though haha what a piece of shit
@nicwoodhouse Good call! Yup, what you said about the Jap vs Taiwan pedals is pretty much the genral feeling between everyone at the moment. Regarding the MT-2, it's a nit like saying 'Macbeth' in the theater!!:)
I've struggled over the years with sound, pedal's, amp's...Blackstar is my latest amp and I was given the Boss Metal Pedal as a birthday gift purchased from E-bay. I am proud to own one and eventually got it signed by Alex Hell of Entombed. What more can I want? It would be great to know more people out there are owning such a great pedal.
@BioHazard1Fin1 If you check out my 'Entombed' video, i've linked a demo of the HM-300. I quite like it, it just a shame about the quality control from Behringer. Nothing like having the real thing though, and why 'Pink' of all colour schemes to use?!? :/

Don't get me wrong, I like these bands, but the people who really want to get an HM-2 can still get one fairly easy. The only thing that mass production will accomplish is a lot of people playing the same guitar tone and, consequently, making the metal scene even less creative, much to the contrary of what bands like Nihilist had originally intended.
@bearwizard Some interesting statements here. There are origional pedals out there, but of varying quality and price ( and alot of the time, you'll end up paying more if it's origional new price if being bid for and import tax in the UK can be quite a stinger) and BOSS/Roland only offer product support to products of the last 25 years, so you are limited on options if you have an origional '83 model.
Yes, guitar tones are contentious when every man and dog uses the same same (I.E Line 6 drive tones,5150's etc) and the individuality can get lost. But at the moment, thats publicly your only choice new. Alot of my students would love the opitunity to have a genuine classic tone brand new from the shops and didn't cost and arm and leg that might work. Only time will tell if it gets over-staturated. If so, that proves that there is a loyal market for it in the first place.
Agreed. I've been trying to get this sound and have failed, no matter what gear I have. The closest I could get was a Digitech emulation of the HM-2, and it wasn't nearly the same since it was a pedal modeling another pedal......also I really want that shirt.
The only thing they should do is make the gain knob work a bit more actively between 3 and 8 :D
The mt-2 is a good pedal, but it is very, very sensitive and you have to spend an awful amount of time playing with it to get a usable tone out of it. I should know, I rehearsed with one for years when I couldn't be bothered to roll the stage rig out. It also has more tonal variety than the HM-2, but just doesn't sound quite as good to my ears
That pedal sounds awesome, i dont understand why boss sell the metal zone and not the hm-2 considering how awesome it sounds. Really think it should be re-issued
The amount of interrest in this pedal should make the decision to reissue it a no- brainer. It has become a classic tone and it is simply good business for Boss to capitalise on that.
