@MrIglaq Easy....they had the element of suprise as they were way behind enemy lines, the Germans had no idea there were tanks in the tunnel. Finally the Germans had no anti-tank weapons there ready for use....add this all up and you get a splatted German installation ;)
@jnadreth u have no idea about tactics, tanks are useless until they have support of infantry, it is easy to get it from behind, and belive me or not u dont need anti-tank weapons
@MrIglaq First of all....I know loads of battle strategys and tactics as these tanks had a tunnel hiding them, they were up against a railroad work cap with a tiny military installation who where miles behind the front lines. Secondly the triangular formation would cover against infantry as their backs were to that tunnel so who could get them from behind....SUPERMAN!?!?!?! Finally the Shermans have a fair amount of anti-personel weapons themselves.
@MrIglaq This battle from Kelly's heroes is tactically sound as the ambush worked....the later battle with 1 Sherman vs 3 Tiger tanks is the one with loads to question. Seriously that is a battle that the Germans should have won even with a slight disadvantage of being in a confined space. In an open battlefield it took an average of 4 Shermans to bring down 1 Tiger...yet the 1 sherman beat 2 of them before conveniently breaking down :P
@jnadreth You are correct, in an open field the Sherman wouldn't have had a chance. But in an urban setting, with some surprise and luck on their side, the smaller and more manueverable tank had a better chance of getting the Tigers softer backside
@FerretJohn The sherman is quite a high tank, but in urban combat it really is good, if this would be real, I"m pretty sure the Krauts would have a panzerfaust or something and ambush it from a side, which would end the Sherman. But love kellys heroes :D
This scene is the greatest. I mean, to have that twangy country love song blaring while shermans are blowing up buildings and machine guns are obliterating german troops.... its maniacal comedy that makes you laugh out loud in disbelief and joy. The entire movie is a masterpiece.... who wants to see just another WW2 movie telling a typical story...yaaaaawnnn... Kelly's Heroes does it in a way that makes you want to keep watching it and share this movie with others for its characters and comedy
my favourite scene of all , watched it as a kid and is what kick started my obsession with armoured vehicles (and what may influence my future, hoping to join the Royal armoured corps when i turn 17 next year)
