Thanks for this! I've lived with a type I RTA diagnosis for 5 years. Knowledge is power! I enjoy learning as much as I can about my condition and getting into the scientific aspect. This is apparently passed down recessively through my family, and it didn't start causing problems for me until I was a teenager. I'm on potassium citrate, sodium bicarb, and a low oxalate diet for to prevent stones. If anyone wants to gripe w/ someone who understands, feel free to message me. :3 Thanks again!
My second daughter was diagnosed with RTA type II at 4 1/2 months old due to her lack of growth. She was way below the growth charts. Now, my 3rd daughter also has this (diagnosed at 6 weeks due to poor growth also)...we have been doing lots of online research on this disease to see if it is in fact hereditary or what. My girls that have this are now 2 years and 8 months old.
@AndreaMahaffey Hi Andrea, it could mean that the baby has RTA, but they should first repeat the bicarbonate test to make sure it was accurate. If it is still 12, then further testing should be done, such as a urine test, to confirm the diagnosis. Why did the infant have the bicarbonate checked at 10 mo of age? Usually a test like that is only done if the baby has or is suspicious of having a medical condition.
