This looks like it is on a hard setting as I played alot of (original)machines and on most of them they did not fire at you when they were going into formation at stages 1 and 2. This made it easier to let them stack up on stages 1 and 2 because I was always told that if you wait until they break away and go into attack before you start firing on them you get more points. Not sure if that was true though.
i actually played a stand alone galaga machine in a arcade in lake george ny, just after playing after burner 2 IN A COCKPIT CABINET!!! NO SH*T IM SERIOUS!!!!!!!!! they also had a tetris, ms pacman, pacman, and a centipede machine.

I will admit that Galaga is a pretty cool game and it would be shame for somebody to say they are a gamer and have never even at least heard of Galaga....
Sadly not my favorite vertical shooter, but it's well up there. I respect Galaga as a classic, but my love for vertical shooters does not fall in this genre as much as bullet hell does. Touhou project actually proves you can have a fun vertical shooter without aliens and battleships, the oriental setting (though modern) is quite refreshing.
these sounds remind me when i go to the laundry mat with my mom and she gives me a hand full of quorters and i would run to the sounds of galaga and enjoy the game
This is not a remake or modification of the original arcade version. It is just emulated perfectly, so this version is not new. in fact, the 7800 version is a remake of the original arcade version.
ohh, your wishes were ALMOST fulfilled! ChuChu Rocket returned on modern consoles, but It was exclusive to Apple App Store, and is currently unavailible on XBLA,PSN, or WiiWare! sooo close! Anyways, awesome review
when i whent to disneyland i stayed at the howard johnsons hotel and the had a mrs. pac man/ galaga machine. mrs pac man didnt work for some reason but i did get to play galaga with the arcade joystick and buttons and it kicked ass. much better than the dpad. and since no arcade near me has any old skool arcade machines i loved playing this game at the hotel arcade room . it was the best weekend of my life.
This version looks harder and faster than some of the original arcade version. I spent alot of my teenage years playing Galaga (sadly a sign of a mispent youth perhaps) but really quite familiar with it - I remember : On stages 1 and 2 the aliens did not fire misiles at you when the were assembling in formation at the top of the screen. I also remember that stage 10 was a nice well earned relaxing stage - you could sit idle and let the aliens form and assemble a the top of screen b4 attaking
The arcade version of this is actually my favorite video game. Just hearing those sounds and that music again sends a huge wave of nostalgia crashing over me. The NES version (which I downloaded) isn't as good, but it will have to do. Thanks for the memories!
I remember as a nerdy teen I would go down to the local cannery which had been converted to sort of an indoor strip mall of sorts. Amongst the old arcade machines there, they had a perfectly functioning upright of Galaga. I put lots of quarters into that thing, even though at the time I had a Dreamcast! To this day I throw on Namco Classics on PS2 for some Galaga - timeless design, gameplay, sound, the lot.
Dude -- watching this now at 25+ years distance, you realize how awesome the game design was in Galaga. The sounds just rock - every one of them concise and memorable, from the little rack-up of the pins representing the stage number you're at, to the "Challenging Stage!" flourish at 2:02, to the low thrumming pulsation in the background during pauses. Really creates an atmosphere. And the game play is so smooth and slick.
Nah man, I have galaga on the Wii, PC and 360, 360 has better sound, Wii has a little better graphics, but they're noty selfish with these old games ;P
That's the thing the 360 did right, it included everything you needed to get online, headset, component cables, HDD, PS3 is a great system it's just unfortunate that you have to buy that stuff separately, then again it is a bluray player and has built in wirless.
I have yet to play this game. I have not played it since 1995. This is the game that you can play during the loading screen on the PS1 port of Mortal Kombat 3 right? I do have the game for computer. Time to pop that sucker in . Great review. If this is on the PSN i have not seen it.
Awesome stuff. I wonder if it's weird that whenever I finally get an XBOX 360, the first thing I'll do is buy old arcade games. At this rate, though, I may get a PS3 before the 360. That's a decision for 2009, though. At least M.U.S.H.A. is coming out for the Wii's Virtual Console soon, I hope (it's set to come out in April for Japan!!!). Lots of Still Gaming reviews are going to come from the VC. I never was able to get into the shoot 'em up, but I just bought one VC game that blew me away.
Most of the games you wanted from Sega will probably be on the Wii Virtual Console, or at least the Genesis games would be. If they have the arcade version of Sunset Riders on the Xbox Live Arcade, that would be awesome. That game was awesome, it was made by Konami after all, and they know how to make great games.
That was AWESOME! It looked and handled just like the arcade version. Its great that the younger audience gets to play these awesome games. Galaga RULES!
