Yeah firefighters get paid well, excellent retirement, benefits, etc.. but they had to work their asses off to get there and deserve it. Its ridiculously hard here in California (I'm sure everywhere else too) to get hired as a firefighter, and it's because once hired and after probation they love the job so much they don't retire for 30 years. You have to love what you do in this business, or there's no way the money/retirement could keep you there.

Being a retired lifeguard and having to attend endless fire department staff meetings, I can honestly say that no less than 75% would be in other work if not for the retirement. I can think of an equal number of police dept personnel doing the same thing. I guess "helping people" is their big mantra 'til the check comes in. Forestry is another story.

what world are you living in??? my station is all voulnteer, and we get paid once a year for each call, and that dosent include fire alarms...and its not alot per call...unless youre talking about cops...idk what the hell they are making haha. but we {firefighters} do it to help others, and protect our town/city.
