  • I think that the nerdfighter community should make the movie. John could be the director, and nerdfighters could volunteer as the actors. Wouldn't that be cool?

  • I agree with what you are saying about the movie having to have the same "Soul". Take Narnia and Lord of the Rings for example. Lord of the Rings was directed by some one who had a passion for the series and did extremely well winning 16 Academy awards while Narnia was directed by someone who only loved the plot. The first movie did extremely well while the second not as half as well because there are extra added things that did not go with meaning of the novel and the third was worse.

  • It's most likely neither a Mr. or Mrs. Mumple, but a Miss Mumple.

  • Get Micheal Bay to direct, and you got yourself a blockbuster

  • I think the Max Mayham books could fill the special effects quota. Focus the story around the books and stuff and have clips from them.

  • I want to be a rock star and title my debut album "My Apologies to Mister or Misses Mumple". Now i just need to find some musical talent.

  • it seems like you would be more down with the collaborative artistic process of moving making considering all the work you already do encouraging and participating in collaboration amongst talented people create awesome things. there is obviously more risk allowing other people to have that much control over your project but the reward is something so great you could have never accomplished it alone. quit subtly hating on movies....the dark knight is a very serious story really...

  • YOU SAID "HANK AND I'S"! GAHHHHHH NO.

  • @marisaissocoollike Glad I'm not the only one who noticed. I was like, "Hank's and my"!!!!!!!!!

  • With so many crappy movies out there, I think TFIOS as a movie would kick ass.

  • I love your foresight.

  • ya probably shoulda made Augustus and Hazel young wizards. That would have made a good movie! wait a second....

  • I miss Fat Lucas. :(

  • Oh, look. It did happen.

  • He's the burninator. He just got third degree burns.

  • This was a brilliant negotiating ploy. I'm a bit curious as to how NewsCorp fits in with your business practices. What with the phone hacking and all.

  • Jon I sadly agree with the statement on what people watch these days. I'm a freshman in college studying Film, and shoot, times are bleak. While I agree that people aren't going to theatres to see movies like TFioS would be made into, they are still interested in seeing them. Because the studio system is only interested in making movies that make money, they don't want to make something people would rather see on their TV, like a character drama. Thankfully FOX made an exception for you <33

  • You said it best "People don't want to watch movies like The Fault In Our Stars"

  • Honestly, I'm really glad the right's weren't sold. It's not that i don't think the movie would be great but in my opinoin the book is just too sincere to be anything but a book. I hope that makes sense.

  • @HomicidalZipper *rights

  • "That's an outlandishly broad audience to have to like your thing. Like, that's a huge audience to have to pay 10 or 11 dollars to see your thing." Context is everything. Also, I am apparently 10.

  • *googles acromonious*

  • Honestly, I think Leeroy Williamson scores rarely as opposed to occasionally. It hurts to say it, but it's true.

  • ahhha the movie rights to tfios HAVE been sold now. so hopefully john is pleased with the terms and everything goes A-OK. a tfios movie would be, obvs, really amazingly great for john as a writer and exposure and all that. but it would be WEIRD.

  • Just read chapter one of tfios! Signature..fomagawwd!

  • I love The Fault in Our Stars and I'll respect John's opinion towards it no matter what, but to me and to voice my opinion to make this story into a movie would be robbing me of what made this book special. Every book has a certain vagueness or ambiguity in which the reader can insert his own world to fill the void. To make it a movie would be like forcing one person's opinion of it on to the viewing audience. That's just my thoughts

  • Yeah, we should wait for the world's action movie phase to dissipate. It is a phase, isn't it?

    Crap, I hope so.

I'm sure the future will do better.

  • Damnit John, how dare you write a book that doesn't even have ONE robot in it.

  • TFIOS would appeal to a mass audience because many people have been affected like cancer and also it has teens in it. Two demographics right there. 50/50 is a cancer movie and it did pretty well.

  • ....I cant believe an awesome book such as yours would do worse than some of the AWFUL movies that are released and people still flock to them regardless of how bad they are. I think it would be excellent. DFTBA!

  • Um, nerdfighters? It seems that TFiOS has been optioned by Fox 2000. (seriously, Google it.)

  • John, with a fair number of nerdfighter vloggers making their own webseries (ITalkToSnakes, and Sivartis to name two), have you thought about making one of the films as an indie film. It won't ever be as good as something Hollywood could make, but it will be uniquely yours, and nerdfighterias.

  • But does the movie have to be made by a big Hollywood company? I'd rather see it as an independent movie, without Brad Pitt or other celebrities.

  • An Imperial Affliction should be the one made into a movie. I would pre order tickets to the midnight showing.

  • You made a video in the past? Did you once say that it never stops being now?

  • I get that 10 million is a lot of people, but I think saying "we need to come up with some gimmick to make them all watch" is a mistake, and it's what causes most expensive flashy hollywood to fail. There's a lot of simple movies that have no special effects or anything flashy, just a good story, that are a success.

  • I agree, TFIOS would win awards, but not necessarily box office. Although, if anything, "nerdfighteria" shows support of things that decrease world suck. And, TFIOS does more than that, it decreases world suck while increasing awesome. Unless you, John Green, said otherwise, I would see TFIOS the movie. Because I believe in the initialism DFTBA.

  • Nerdfighters pitch in money for an indie film of one of John's books making director and writer and producer?

  • Honestly, John, I don't care if 10 million people will watch TFIOS in the movies, because I WILL, and I'm sure the other nerdfighters will watch it as well! And I love Into The Wild, both the book and the movie were awesome, so if not many people enjoy movies like that, the problem is not the movie/book/actors/whatever, the problem is (are) the people.

  • Watch from 6:48 to 6:58 and listen to John saying "you know" 4 times in 10 seconds. hahaha

  • I honestly think TFIOS could be done a ton better by a smaller Film Company, and possibly not be shown in Main-Stream theaters, it could afford to be more true to itself that way.

  • I don't think The Fault in Our Stars would translate well to the screen. I don't want it to happen, I'm afraid it would tarnish even one little thing about a story that is in every way perfect to me already.

  • John, you're doubting yourself and the nerdfighters. I would see the midnight showing of TFIOS and I would probably see it two more times and I don't think I'm alone on this. Please consider it. Because I don't want to see transformers 6 or another batman movie.

    Kate

  • @synchrogirl978 You don't want to see another Batman movie?! The Dark Knight was fantastic!

  • The King's Speech didn't have any of those things and people loved it. Finding Neverland didn't have any of those things and people loved it. Why wouldn't people love The Fault in Our Stars?

  • If the Nerdfighters make an indie TFiOS movie, I'd donate some money for production and everything. I could probably spare $10 or $20.

  • @dolphin64575 I'm a student filmmaker (director) and I've worked on professional sets before...I would 100% be down to tackle that this summer if we all manage to raise some money for it. I have contacts who can help me obtain a pretty nice camera for free.

  • @ChristianaVerite Dude that would be SO JOKES start a forum in Your Pants or something. There is nothing Nerdfighteria cannot accomplish. LET'S DO THIS!

  • Well John, that is just not true, all your books would be lovely as indie film with you having final cut. The stories is not fitted for blockbuster but to the couch... It can work if you have some faith in other people AND begin to see the movies and books as seperate things.

  • I personally am always disappointed and i think any movie remake of your books would result in disappointment in nerdfighteria and your book supporters in general. There will be something different and askew from someones personal interpretation of the book and it will result in anger.

  • I'll spend my summer making an indie TFIOS film

  • "...about Hank and I's business principles..." WTF, John? You're supposed to be better than this!

  • Hey John, I'd love to hear you talk more about your experiences at Kenyon College during one of these videos!

  • Sargent Max Mayhem movie please.

  • All the dislikes for this video come from people with the last name of Mumple.

  • Something interesting to consider is how the kind of effects that convey the thoughts of characters (ie. floating text) in a visual way could be implemented in a TFIOS movie. More dubiously, there are certainly some video game scenes described in TFIOS that would have mass market appeal, but these would also contradict the tone of the story. It would take a better writer than myself to come up with an idea to develop such a contrast appropriately. Still, I'd prefer a simple, faithful adaption.

  • I think that there should be a Nerdfighter challenge to create short films out of tfios. There's a lot of talent floating about in this community.

  • @y0seph12 Its too long to be a short film. Nice idea though. If everyone made one.

  • @y0seph12 - Already working on making the first chapter into a short film, check out my channel it's all the behind the scenes stuff. We film next weekend (Feb 18th)

  • For everyone saying 'all films are crap, they ruin every single book!' - explain The Shawshank Redemption. Also, not all films are 3D Transformers movies. Look at the success of The Artist. No explosions or transformers in that one. Don't assume all films are crap and to make one would be 'selling out', you're failing to imagine things complexly.

  • John should rest and spend his energies on books and YouTube videos and nerdfighting. Making movies is time consuming and John Green's time is a precious and finite resource. It may not seem that way as we watch him play FIFA for hours but it certainly is.

  • So excited that you mentioned Into the Wild.

  • John not being a corporate whore vs. TFIOS movie

...I'm glad John is choosing the right option :)

" excellent at living in a way that's commensurate with your values "

  • You should make an Indie film out of one of your books. A faithful adaptation of your book would problaly would do very well with a nische audience. As far as big celebrities are concerned it might be lacking, but I am sure that the essence of the book can be somehow made onto the silver screen.

  • people DO want to see movies like that... you just have to make it in Canada or the UK where they make movies on a smaller scale and have a huge amount of support from their respective governments... see Monsieur Lazhar, the Canadian Oscar nominated movie, which is amazing AND very sad. Or Incendies, which is even more upsetting.

    Have you looked into that?

  • There already is a man who is the burninator, well he's more of a dragon man. And his name is trogdor

  • I read an article in a newspaper (here in Australia) today about the Italian who is now working for the actual Swindon Town, although it wasn't clear about his actual job for the team. Either way, I was very excited to read about actual Swindon Town

  • I am totally reading Into The Wild for an English class...my teacher said that it didn't do the research justice (but, really, how could it?).

  • the real swindon town lost today in the fa cup 4th round :/

  • As an aspiring filmmaker, I would love to make the TFIOS movie, but then again I don't because I think it needs to remain a novel.

  • I completely agree with you here, John. I mean, it would be fantastic if TFIOS could be captured well on the big screen and I would be one of those people who would go see it because I think that Hollywood should have more variety of movies; nothing seems original anymore, though it's hard for movies to be their own.

Though to be truthful, I do not think that TFIOS would be given any justice if ever adapted into a film for to me it wouldn't evoke as much emotion as the written word.

  • Oh and John, you managed to express why I dislike the 3rd to 5th Harry Potter movies (which have caused me to not care to watch the 6th to 8th movies). I just didn't feel like the meaning or the spirit of the books were there.

  • For God's sake. Do we really need the Giant Squids of Anger going around the place telling John to turn down the skill level. Guys, we're in THE PREMIER LEAGUE! I want to see a challenge. Back when John kept winning every game 5-0, I was absolutely bored out of my skull. I wouldn't have kept watching if it weren't for John. I enjoy these games where I actually don't know the outcome, and it makes the victories we earn even more special.

Besides, John will adapt to the new skill level eventually.

  • Make a movie of The Price of Dawn.

  • I actually feel like a good Fault in Our Stars movie would be extremely popular. (and would probably be v. tempting Oscar bait)

  • @winniemmkay I agree, but should Hollywood get their grubby hands on it? I'm not so sure. Perhaps a independent film maker/studio.

  • Actually... I feel like a lot of John's books would make really good films. Especially TFIOS.

  • I disagree john, i think people would love this movie right now.

  • honestly, I leave the Swindle Town series on JUST for the commentary. Sorry John, but I haven't watched a single Swoodilypoopers game -- I just love your stories so much heh :)

  • Still watching and reading

  • He definitely tells his story after he plays

He was reacting before the video showed anything

  • the sound is just off enough for you to sound like you have the fastest commentating reflexes ever.

  • Into the Wild is one of my favorite movies.

I just didn't hear about it until it was way too late to see it.

  • Oh John, if you made the TIFIOS movie, or any others you could gain back rights to, through DFTBA, and used Kickstarter to raise money, Nerdfighteria would pay for you to produce this film. Please do it!

  • I hope to god that TFIOS is never made into a movie. TFIOS has become special to me in the way An Imperial Affliction is special to Hazel. it's the kind of book I never really want to discuss with others because it's too special for me too want to risk damaging my peception of it (not that discussing books is bad, but hearing other opinions can alter you view of something) And nothing can be more damaging to the perception of a book than having it become a movie.

  • I have a surprising amount of faith in the film industry. It's true that Hollywood is incredibly corrupt, but there is still a fairly powerful demand for intellectual media. I feel as though emotion, intent and metaphor can be conveyed effectively and beautifully through film. I would love to see TFIOS on the big screen, but only if I can be assured that the people making the movie are as devoted to the plot and the characters as you and the faithful readers.

Either way, haters gunna hate :P

  • 1. @makingnoise22 just asked my question. If it were an independently made movie with like you with total control, would you say yes?

    2. Did you just say the Dark Knight RETURNS?!!!!!!!

  • Hollywood is in the buisness of stealing popular books and profiting off them. They think that they can just take the plots of books, transfer them to the screen, and make lots of money. This is probably not always true, of course, but I think a TFioS movie could follow this concept and have only the plot of this amazing, beautiful novel and not everything else it has to give. I think that movie companies need to find their own plots, and leave novels to what they are best at: being novels.

  • @spazmtasticly I agree to an extent. I mean I would never want TFIOS to be a movie because I don't think it would translate well (not to mention the casting would forever distort how I picture the characters and I hate when that happens to books I love). Still though I think there are novels that you read and can't help but think "this would make a great movie" I think it's just that some stories translate better to video than others, hell some would probably work better as movies than books.

  • @kaleidostar88 For example: The Princess Bride movie pwns the book. Perhaps becuase the author wrote/writes more screenplays than books.

  • How bout an indie movie? I feel that the fault in our stars would make a great small production "literary" film where u had all the control

  • I understand and respect your viewpoint on this matter, John.

But can I remind you of all the nerdfighters who would watch this movie regardless of the ratings or whatever?

In the end, though, its your choice and I will still respect your choice if you change your mind. :)

  • To be fair to you, John. There are a lot of people who love watching movies based on Mitch Albom's novels such as "Have a Little Faith" or "Tuesdays with Morrie", those do not have fancy special effects or anything too crazy in them! I am sure there are many people who would love to see your novels in movie format.

Regardless, I understand your stance. :)

    DFTBA!!

  • $10-$11? In Australia (if it's 3D) it's like $17.50

  • "BirmingHAM City..."

    Oh, you amuse me, John.

  • Would u consider being writer/directer ect & keeping all the creative control on a low budget movie that is really good. I would love seeing something like what Felicia Day does with The Guild & Dragon Age with non hollywood people, that is really really good & released in a dif way, then a great book made crappy by hollywood for the mainstream. I know u wouldn't make even close to hollywood $ but if done well i bet u would make some $, & fans would love seeing YOUR story on film as U see it.

  • I don't think it's true that people only want to watch blockbusters like the Dark Knight. Art house and independent cinema still proves there's a demand. We're more intelligent than that. Brill video though and am loving TFIOS :)

  • I imagine Alexandre Desplat or James Newton Howard would write a great soundtrack!

  • No film? Good! Otherwise Hollywood would cast Robert Pattison as "hottest and most unforgettable guy in school" as it's done at least twice and TFiOS transcends a traditional youth focus by accelerating the life course of Hazel and Augustus away from school to allow the challenging of our ideas of full lives and heroism.

  • The Princess Bride was an extremely faithful adaptation, and that's a wonderful film :).

  • Why don't you do what Stephen Chbosky is doing with "The Perks of being a wallflower" and write and direct it yourself?

  • I dont know about a TFIOS movie, but I would love to see a Looking for Alaska movie. It has a good balance of funny and seriousness, plus a good bit of visual adventure.

  • I for one would love to see a movie that wasn't in 3D, wasn't animated, wasn't a sequel or a remake, wasn't a romcom, wasn't filled with explosions and special effects, and didn't involve a) guns, b) robots, c) psychotics with guns and/or robots, or d) people getting drunk and doing stupid things. Just because the medium is visual doesn't mean visuals trump story...

Also, you could turn down your difficulty, John.

  • @GamblingTime I wouldn't mind a shootout scene between van Houten and Waters.

  • @GamblingTime I agree with you with your entire comment. Except for you saying to turn the level down.

  • @GamblingTime You should come to Europe :p

  • Ten or eleven dollars? Man, I wish movie tickets were that cheap in Sweden.

  • Just for the record, Into the Wild was a box office success. About 60 million profit off a 15 million budget. Literary adaptations can work!

  • I miss Fat Lucas...

  • Season 3, still saying "don't worry guys, we're gonna get better."

  • I don't want TFiOS to be a movie. Its amazing the way it is. Every novel doesn't need to be adapted into a movie. It was created the way that you envisioned, for many years, and should be kept sacred to that standard. I (and I hope many other nerdfighers) do not need to see a movie adaptation because I enjoy the novel in its own right because you John Green, put in the effort and soul that we have come to appreciate and will never stop appreciating...

    PS

I got a hankler fish and its awesome :)

  • @littletawastar Exactly! I fear that the movie would make the book less special.

  • Is the audio a few seconds in front of the video. John keeps saying things before they happen on the field!!

  • I think what John means to say is that he's glad he has Julie Strauss-Gabel and that she's awesome. Not some Hollywood phoney. I can only agree!

  • dont go to hollywood go to a independent company the uk film industry are known for making very good movies in my opinion

  • Am I the only one who really doesn't want TFIOS to be a movie? I want the Hazel, Augustus, Isaac, Peter Van Houton, and everyone else to be mine and not some film's adaption. Ah. The idea just terrifies me...

  • Do you think there would be any difference with a TV miniseries? Of TFioS, or any other of your books.

  • Comment removed

  • if you cast Ryan Gosling as Hazel, you would definitely get 10 million people to see the movie (or at least I'd go see it 10 million times)

  • I mean, If the Price of Dawn existed, everyone would go see it. I'm just saying.

  • I'd gladly be one of ten million to see tfios movie.....hell I might even see it trice times....so count me in for four.

  • Thanks for this video, John. You probably won't see this, but I have a BA in fiction writing and am currently studying film adaption, and I would die to adapt TFiOS, or any of your other books if I could usurp the seemingly dormant film rights to any of them. The reason I want to do adaptation is so I can break down this trend of great books being made into movies that fall short. I love books and I love movies and I want them both to be great. I'm working on it! :]

  • Do I see a DFTBA movie production company on it's way!?

  • @AdamCarterMovies French the llama! That's brilliant! If a DFTBA movie production company was a thing, I would consider going to college for film instead of either psychology or to become a librarian. I like the way you think :D

  • @levitgames I actually think that's a fantastic idea! Can you imagine what that would be like? I

  • I don't want a TFiOS movie, or a Paper Towns movie, or a Hunger Games movie.

Why can't Hollywood write it's own movies and leave our wonderful books alone.

  • @canadian00793 let john know, it was an error and he said he would fix it. just let him know about it

  • Comment removed

  • Got the fault in our stars today. Thanks amazon.ca for NOT GIVING ME A SIGNED COPY WHEN I PREORDERED IN THE SUMMER!!!!!

    /caps rage.

  • Independent Film Festivals could get it done with all the quality and enjoyment.

  • I have a hard time saying Into the Wild did terribly at the box office. 56m on a movie like Dark Knight Rises would be terrible, sure, because that movie cost 250m to make, but Into the Wild only cost about 15m to make so the film tripled its investment. I don't think that's all too bad, really. It's no 137m on a 20m investment (Bridge to Terabithia, another book turned movie) but still, all things put into perspective, not too bad.

  • I think Emma Stone would be able to play Hazel well. She doesn't LOOK like Hazel, but I think she could capture her in the way I've imagined.

  • But.. but... Into the Wild was an amazing movie. Box office results aren't everything!

  • you could always ask nerdfighteria to help you make the movie yourself. :) never under estimate us. :) DFTBA!!!!! :)

  • Best quote of the game: "Pay 11 to 12 dollars to see your thing"

  • Have you watched Hank play Mario? I don't think you need to apologize for being bad on his game channel.

  • Please don't make The Fault in Our Stars into a movie. It was such an amazing book and I had such a personal experience. I don't think it is a story that can be portrayed on screen as beautifully as it is in print. This way, all of your readers can keep the characters in the form they've been imagined, instead of seeing the face of an actor.

  • What have we learned John? Don't underestimate Nerdfightaria!

  • It would be amazing if you got a bunch of YouTube stars together and put together a feature length film for TFIOS and posted it to YouTube for like a dollar per view with the proceeds going to decreasing world suck. Probably won't happen, but I would pay to watch it.

  • so long as none of the text is cut from the movie it would be great but they need to say everything in one way or another.

  • John, I believe that no book is to literary to be a movie if you have the right people on the project. If I were to make a film from a novel I would use and stick to the book. it can be done without hacking a book down. and the movie can be well done with out sacrificing content or quality. it may be worth scouring new media for the people needed.

  • please don't make the fault in our stars into a movie, I'm a afraid making it into a movie will ruin it

  • Can we at least have a Max Mayhem movie?

  • Wait, there are no Transformers in your book? Oh, it's The Fault in Our Stars? I thought it was The Fault in Our Cars...

  • i will probably never watch a movie based on a john green book

  • I only watch for the commentary..... :)

  • Mario ?

  • @GONEmypurpleflapjack Yeah that'd be funny! I just think it'd turn into sort of a typical road trip flick that would sort of lose a lot of the meaning the book was conveying. Or maybe I'm just being protective because it's my favorite JG book (...or is TFiOS my new favorite? I'll have to give em all a re-read...)

  • @plaidpantsglory I agree. Also, they'd probably skip over some of his memories and that would be crap.

  • I thought It's Kind of a Funny Story wouldn't translate well to screen either, but I ended up being really impressed.

  • Into the Wild made $56 million total (domestic and Foreign) that's not that bad. Though, the $18 million domestically is small.

  • The movie of you book would be more like Shawshank Redemption over Transformers.

  • Gosh. 50/50 was a really, really great movie.

  • I don't want a TFIOS movie. I think it's an amazing book but it really wouldn't come across well in a movie.

  • no transformers?!?!! SPOILER!!!

  • I agree with everyone else. I think TFIOS should be a Nerdfighter production, done independently through you guys. Like, DFTBA film or something. :P And the funding can be done in the same way as "Nuka Break" or the Minecraft documentary. Nerdfighter supported, nerdfighter made, and at the end of the day if it's successful enough to go to the big screen, so be it.

    I think that's a good policy. :]

  • Personally for me I do not want a TFIOS movie. The book was amazing for me, the first book in a long while that I enjoyed so much I just couldn't put it down. I went to amazon straight after reading it and bought all your other books, which I have finished now aswell. In my head I created how I felt Hazel Grace and Augustus looked like and honestly, I'd be so disappointed if the actor and actress never matched up to what I feel they look like.

    Congratulations, DFTBA :)

  • Good chances in this game. Have to think some will start going in at some point.

  • I can't imagine a TFiOS movie...the book...is just too special and is so much exclusively a book that a movie would just trump it and destroy it

  • John Green used to be a finisher, but then he took the Premier League to the knee.

  • if tifios ever becomes a movie i will not watch it. im sorry but the book makes me too depressed and lonely. FML

  • To be honest, the gameplay is pretty much the same as it always was, up to the point where the ball doesn't actually go in the goal. You're still taking it up TO the goal frequently, just not quite finishing.
