He does not rip off other people. and realistically every director gets some influence from others so sure maybe some things he comes up with seems similar to other people, but he always makes things his own. and actually, his Charlie & the Chocolate Factory was almost exactly like the book. even the songs. i love both (in fact i like Willy Wonka better) but Burton stayed more true to the book & that's just a fact. &with this, he's just showing the twisted/weird side of Alice like it really is.

&in regards to Johnny Depp...he has been voted numerous times in different things as best actor, favorite actor, actor of the decade, etc. Not that popularity instantly makes someone great, but there is a reason people love him. Try watching Secret Window, Public Enemies, Dead Man, Gilbert Grape... there's a lot. he's versatile & really gets into his roles. For example he spent 4+ months LIVING w/Hunter S. Thompson in order to study his role for Fear&Loathing. i think that shows some commitment.
