@lublarryb my sister also called Lisa was the one who introduced me to Cat Stevens. She also died from a heroin overdose administered by her boyfriend at the time. She died 19 years ago now. There is no day where she doesn't visit my thoughts as she was my big sister and I loved her so much! Pain never goes away and sometimes it does ease but my heart still aches for her! I am not a religious person but I hope she greets me again one day.

it's hard when you have a friend who is in depression
but my advice that may save you is one advice a lot of people need!
if you do have a friend who is depressed, don't get too close emotionally with her cause you will break down and you will fall to the same awefull place if you are not strong,
you will fall in depression and brokeness.

I always felt that there were multiple meanings of "Lisa," for she has been several different people and emotions from my life, and the song has a snowballed meaning- cannot pick one, and there are no wrong answers as far as I can see.

@emi141001 In "my opinion" given the history we know about Cat now Yusuf, Im not sure when he wrote this song but if you listen to most of his songs towards the end of his career before converting, most of them were about seeking God through spirituality. Since this was written before he converted he probably had a girl he was involved with who may have been either atheist or agnostic who he was trying to convince to have faith in God as he was going through his spiritual acceptance of Islam.

what he describes in the song is the feeling he got from her, she was hurting herself and he wanted to help, desperately he says in the end "MAYBE one day i will free her" he probably know he can't, it's a sad song...

hehe and this is THE kind of song which you can most connect with when you are going through those things mentioned in the lyrics of the songs.
it can effect for the good and the bad..

friends I just wanna tell you something from the heart
it's hard when you have a friend who is in depression
but my advice that may save you is one advice a lot of people need!
if you do have a friend who is depressed, don't get too close emotionally with her cause you will break down and you will fall to the same awefull place if you are not strong,
you will fall in depression and brokeness.
I love you people and that's why I'm telling it to you, because it happened to me..

I always felt that there were multiple meanings of "Lisa," for she has been several different people and emotions from my life, and the song has a snowballed meaning- cannot pick one, and there are no wrong answers as far as I can see.

It's strange. I'm also only 17, but I am considered strange, as this is one of my favorite songs, and I'm also a tremendous fan of the genius Leonard Cohen, so that is supposed to make me...weird. Bah. Two things...the instruments behind his voice are simply immaculate, extremely beautiful and simply magnificent, and second...correct me if I'm wrong, but Lisa is a ghost, isn't she?

@emi141001 In "my opinion" given the history we know about Cat now Yusuf, Im not sure when he wrote this song but if you listen to most of his songs towards the end of his career before converting, most of them were about seeking God through spirituality. Since this was written before he converted he probably had a girl he was involved with who may have been either atheist or agnostic who he was trying to convince to have faith in God as he was going through his spiritual acceptance of Islam.

I understand this song, cause i understand the feeling of the singer.
he said in a concert it's about a fan he had who was his friend and it seems that she was really in a sad place, really depressed and all of this.
what he describes in the song is the feeling he got from her, she was hurting herself and he wanted to help, desperately he says in the end "MAYBE one day i will free her" he probably know he can't, it's a sad song...
