Seriously people, riding your bike to a bus stop isn't "unfit" or ridiculous! Some people have to travel far just to get to a bus stop (depending on where you are) and need to get to where they are going on time and quick! So a bike just makes things faster!
@PlasticSheeps Yeah Im gunna have to start riding my bike 8 miles to get to the nearest bus stop in my area. Iv rode the bus for years n saddly to say I had to youtube on how to use the bike racks lol xD.
Contrary to what is written, most of the people who use the bike racks are 20 and 30somethings for whom bikes are accessories, like plastic bracelets for public causes, and hats. Older people tend to consider bikes as transportation and ride around the hills or push the bikes over them. Statistics used by the electric bike industry show the same thing: Young people are too lazy to ride, they like the idea of arriving on a bike, but not the effort required to actually go the distance.
Same racks on SEPTA buses, I used it a couple of times. A couple of times I thought the bike was going to fall off the rack. You have really messed up roads in Philly. It is very secure though.
@ubpsanity Going long distances or having to go somewhere where there isn't a suitable bike route. An example would be in the Bay Area where we're surrounded by a bay and the only ways to cross the bay are via bridge or subway train (Known as BART). Bikes are allowed on BART and on buses that use the bridges.
Also, San Francisco has a shitload of steep hills. I think you can figure that one out for yourself. :)
@ubpsanity LOL! That's silly! Public transit is meant to encourage more riders and fewer automobiles on the road. Plus, it's a big help to cyclists who are not able to ride long distances and uphill for whatever reason. I'm so glad they provide racks. Just wish BART didn't have block out times for bikes. Makes it kind of difficult.
They got these on nearly every bus system these days. It solves the "last mile problem" because it allows people to ride to their stop and subsequently to their destination. Best thing since sliced bread.
Not to be rude but as someone who has been doing this for a while, you shouldn't do it the way she showing it here.
I always carry the bike with one hand as I approach, QUICKLY lowering the bike rack (without letting it crash to the bottom position). Then, do NOT lift your bike by the holding the seat as you place the back wheel in FIRST.
You bike seat will come lose and fall, and they cost about $30 to repair after you do it that way for a couple of months.
@HeusyBluesy This isn't meant to be rude to you either but your bike seat should NOT come loose or fall from picking it up like that... it ALSO should not cost $30 to repair. A simple hex wrench will tighten up a loose seat. Maybe you are talking about something else breaking but bikes are pretty strong when it comes the the seat, handlebars and frame. The wheels are the sensitive part ;)
I've been too intimidated (for 2 years!) to figure this out on my own. On a whim, I searched "load bike muni" and voila—this is great. I love youtube.
its easy alright...and easy to steal too.

But, if I have my bike, why am I taking a bus? Next, if I drive to the bus stop, will the bus be able to tow my car?

@mikokat Agreed about the steep hills. I wish BART would open up a couple cars for bikes during the block out times. Wouldn't that be nice!

You wait for the next bus that has an open rack.

The first and only time I've tried this I panicked and called my parents to pick it up at the roadside. Fail! :(
