I feel the beginning of the vid where Seamus Murpy has the young woman reciting the lines is absolutely brilliant. Notice how she just starts reciting the lines as if they meant nothing to her. Until she recites "I cannot go on as I am." Then (Boom!) it hits her. She starts realizing the depth & weight of the words she recited. Eyes look downcast then turn away from the camera as she realizes the profundity of what she just recited. Like a sudden understanding. Very moving. I still get chills.
I always heard the name PJ Harvey and wanted to hear her songs but never had a chance. With discovering new artists I need to listen to a CD a few times to somewhat understand the artist and start to like them. That wasnt the case with PJ.
I heard this song 1 time and it got stuck in my head instantly, I had to play it on repeat for the rest of the evening. Wow!
@super1114 There is something extremely appealing and attractive about her, isn't there. It's quite hard to put a finger on. Obviously her talent and intelligence is a big part of that.
I wonder what went wrong with her and Nick Cave (well, I don't really want to know), most interesting couple ever!
My personal opinion is that this album is excellent and it seems to have received much acclaim from the musical press. I only hope that PJ carries on being so creative and continues to evolve, as only truly great artists do.
How can ANYONE say this album is crappy? I know and love deeply all the music Polly Jean gave us and it is all such a rare and precious gift. This is a wonderful album. And I just can't stop listening to it.... (except when only Dee Dee's 1234 is what might fill the air!)
@ssslcus82 i thought that part was the best part that crazy indiginous amazingness and when it comes back leaves my chest feeling like it has an icepick driven through it leaving me in breathless awwwee.
this album and particularily this collaboration with seamus murphy is the best thing thats happened to me this year. Her lyrics are weighted poetry, the music is unconventional but gets sweeter to the ears each time and the video is a meloncholic yet fizzing image of england.... if this seems pretentious to you then fair enough but i feel sorry for you that you cant feel its beauty.
@MrLeechy01 I used to love PJ until she released this pretentious, crappy album. It's not that avant garde scares me, believe me IT DOESN'T. I am a big fan of Diamanda Galas, Ron Geesin and Evangelista, so NOTHING can scare me. But at this point PJ has completely lost her direction, she just wants to be weirder and weirder for the sake of being weird. And that is not being an artist, that is being pretentious and arrogant.
Hi - This album has nothing to do with being avant garde. The songs are fairly conventional, with beautiful melodies and wonderful lyrics. What is so weird about it?
@damkring If this was conventional music it would have some airplay. How can someone on their right mind think 0:30 - 0:50 is something conventional? May be conventional for Yoko Ono or Björk. But regardless of that, it is crap.
@montecarlostar this album was not the weirdest music she has done by a long shot. actually more accessible than most. rid of me was a million times more experimental and raw than this. to bring you my love was much weirder than this. so was uh huh her. she does something different on each album. she hasn't gotten any more or less "weird" at all. really I mean, have you seen her performances in the cat-suits from 90s? this is weirder than that? you don't know what you are talking about.
This is the video I've been waiting for! "England" is absolutely my favorite song on the whole album. Oh man, at around 1:59, I get chills every time.
love this record so much! but still dont get the videos....... i prefer to see her just playing in front of the camera....or just walking somewhere..... anyway,....just my opinion.
