Ok lets be honest Patrick Willis is by far the fastest LB in the NFL, 4.35 forty, and Manny Lawson also runs a 4.4something forty. Hey If the hand times that the scouts get when they clock them at are good enough for them they are good enough for me.
Williams also had to break 2 tackles AND regain his balance and accelerate again while Howard, after getting blocked(in his defense) was running full speed by then.....Howard wouldn't have even been on the screen if Williams didn't have to break those tackles. Both are fast enough to play in the league, that's all that matters...right?
It's cool that Thomas Howard is a fast LB but it only matters when you actually TACKLE the runner! hahaha! D. Will made him look pretty funny at the end of the run.
40 yd dash times are overrated folks...the ol term football speed comes to mind along with agility and vision. If D. Will didn't have either of those,he would've gotten caught.
and also, wihtout taking any credit away from thomas's effort and speed, he should have never had to run after deangelo, the paly should been made at the line of scrimmage, and at teh end of the play, they scored, thats all that matters
i didnt say that someone touched him at the line of scrimmage, im saying that a succesful play is a result of the running back being tackled for minimal gain
um no its not, because if a guy get stopped at the line of scrimmage, its not because his o-line didnt block, some teams actually have good defensive lines
what you said may not seem true but it is, im glad you brought that up, deangelo is fast, dont get me wrong, but he doesnt have top end speed, hes quick and shifty and lightning fast, but alot of times when it seems as if hes gonna outrun the defense, a defender runs into the scene, if you look, he definently has breakaway speed, but even in college when it seemed like he would outrun the defense he had to cut back, good point
Do you even account that Howard was moving the opposite direction and had to change direction and also was being blocked on the play? If nobody touched Howard, he would have made the play.
If you knew how to analyze this play, you would see that 90 on the Raiders is the reason for this long gain. You can't turn your shoulders like that. Watch it again
thats part of it but there are three linebackers...howard goes to his spot, the middle LB follows howard basically in the same hole and that leaves the outside backer to fill in that huge whole created by the end...it was the whole front seven's fault...
and i agree with the people who say DW got spun around cuz he did...if you notice he was barely about to cross the first down marker when he spun around...that gave howard a head start since DW had to regain his full momentum...
bullshit! he wasn't 'catching' him!!! williams saw the block on his right rear and had it in cruise....notice when he gets to the 25yrd line, he hears Howard and kicks in the afterburners....Howard didn't trip, he dove.....besides....RB's pads weigh a good 3-5 lbs less....howard fast...definitely....faster than williams....funny, but not even close!
What block on his right rear? He has eyes in the back of his head now? He wasn't on cruise, cause he wasn't even all the way through the secondary yet. He was bobbing and weaving because that's what you do when somebody is faster than you, force them to change direction out of reaction and they lose speed. Also, you're argument about the pads supports my argument that Howard is heavier and has heavier pads and still was running to catch him. It was close. Williams ran a 4.55 at the combine
@Newlopw3 I was wrong, he didn't run at the combine. The Pro Day time is unofficial because it was timed by hand. That's why the only Official time is the combine time because it's electronic timed. That's why he didn't run at the combine because that isn't disputable. It depends who was timing him at his Pro Day because Sports Illustrated timed him at 4.55s and ESPN got him at 4.47s and Mike Mayock had him at 4.50s. They were all at his Pro Day and they got different times...
He said he saw the guy catching him on the big screen. That guy is fast for sure, but DeAngelo had already sprinted what, 40-50 yds? He probably couldve caught him but D-Will is a smart runner and did what he had to to score the TD....my 2 cents there
he wasn't on cruise, that #21 looked pretty close to him as well. 21 is a CB and should be a lot faster than Williams and Howard if he plays CB for Al Davis and the Raiders. I thought Howard was going to catch him, he dove too early, and Williams did look as if he had greatprescence because I thought he could feel 53 closing in
Actually he was smart by letting him score then. Would have been a touchdown anyway with the defense tired from running him down. Not to mention it leaves more time on the clock for the offense(as if we had any).
Actually, Thomas Howard ran a 4.35 at the combine, dude is a freaking beast, when we selected in him in the 2nd rd, the stupid scouts said we made a mistake, he"s hands down top 5 olb in the league but gets no love cause he plays for the raiders, if we blitz him every down like a demarcus ware or shawne merriman, he will be leading the league in sacks
You can't compare Howard to Ware because they are 2 different types of 'backers. Merriman and Ware are rush-linebackers and Howard is a WILL in a 4-3. Totally different positions and Howard is decent rushing the QB but not great, he also struggles at the point of attack at times. I think he will get better, but he would struggle playing Rush 'backer. Also, no, look up his times. He ran OFFICIALLY 4.41 and 4.47 at the combine. Not 4.35. Still fast though!!!
Yes, I realize he didn't catch him. That's not the point of the video. The point is that he is so obviously faster than DeAngelo Williams and that is no joke! It's not a knock against Williams, its showing what kind of speed Howard is capable of...
But most people would agree that Williams is one of the faster backs in the league. I'm just saying Thomas Howard is faster than that... Just giving this guy some love. He is one of the most underrated WILL 'backers in the league. He averages 90+ tackles per season, and has more interceptions in the last 2 years than any other Linebacker...
You know D Will is holding a football compared to Thomas not holding one. The only way to tell is to line them both up and tell them to race. Btw, all I see here is a TD because that guy is a fucking idiot that fell flat on his face.
