The reason Peugeots didn't sell well in the US was because they had a TERRIBLE dealer network. There were very few true Peugeot dealers, but lots of Ford dealers who sold Peugeots, or Chevy dealers who sold Peugeots, etc. Because you couldn't get them serviced properly it hurt their reputations. I've owned 4 (81 STD, 82 STD, 84 Wagon, and a 87 Turbo.
@Catrinus1 my mom had the 88' Silver Edition. A real beauty, poor thing was so heavy it sank in the sands! But she was a real solid car, unfortunately it stalled in an intersection and was hit pretty hard by the oncoming traffic. My mom fixed it up but it never rode the same again. ;(
What you all may not know is that this exact car in this commercial and the one in the video of the SCCA National Championship is not only one and the same car it is also to this day my daily driver. 175,000 miles of soft, fast and absolutely reliable performance. Thank you Alex for posting it in the first place.
Anyway, as a PSA car owner (Citroen C4 HDI VTS) I can guarantee you that you won´t find a better fuel consumption, reliable and cheap 4 wheel machine all around the world
Look how good Pug engines are, that FORD, FIAT, Renault, BMW had all asked for their road car technology to be applied in their products
You can still see PSA technology (Peugeot-Citroen) winning at LeMans currently...against the other great expertise holder in the name of VAG (Volkswagen-Audi)
Americans are fcktards thats why they cant taste Pugs advanced technology: being the 205, 405, 905 racing cars the most pure expresion of this.
They just prefer to buy thirsty chevys, oldsmobiles, hummers, Fords and all that bug-y crap...
Find a 504 in the middle of the Sahara desert and ask his locale owner about his car: He´ll speak marvels of how its Pug survived during 30 years without a single maladie...
American marquet was, is and will be always full of shit: protectionism.
@VoxPeople Nice stereotyping I really appreciate it ASSHOLE! I just so happen to be American, and even though I like Chevys and 1960s muscle cars, I do actually like Peugeots. If I could get my hands on one, I would drive it everyday. I'm pretty sure they are pretty comfortable(depending on the model of course, I mean I am a little on the heavy side). I have a friend, born and raised in the US, and he has a 505 and loves it. Take your head out of your ass dude. YOU are a "fucktard".
The French 'P' is not explosive, as with the English 'P'. So the P in Peugeot is very soft, like you are whispering into your lover's ear. The next part is the 'eu'. It is not oo, as in Boo! It is not yew as in Jew. It is like early, before you hit the 'r'. Next is the 'g' - it is soft like Jesus, but with a buzzing sound - like a fly buzzing. The eot is easy, like 'oh' . All together now - pe ZJOH, with the accent on the second syllable.
(cont.) WTH1K, its true the 87 NHTSA rated the 505 poorly, but my wife and I survived an attack by a 53' semi at speed and walked away without a scratch. The car ( an 87 turbo 5 speed) was a technical write off, but it was so lovely, I had it rebuilt and it is back on the road, full of feline felicity, ferocity and panache. For the last 5 years, I have been looking for a replacement for my 505 sedans (V6 and turbo) and wagons, but have yet to find any vehicle that can do what they do.
This embarrassingly gauche ad epitomizes how poorly Peugeot managed its North American market. Having driven 505s exclusively since 1983 (own or have owned 8, not counting parts and project cars) and having five on the road today, with about 500,000 miles of 505 time under my belt, I can safely say that these are great cars, deserving of much better advertisements than can be seen here and elsewhere. (see next)
Are these reliable? I was thinking of getting one since I have always been a big fan on the looks and as they are a French car sort of exotic and rare in the US. I do want a V6 though, hope these models are still out there used.
Was the 405 a lemon? My 505 -first car-was a hand me down from my mom.I loved those arched, scowly headlights.Probably the most reliable car I ever had too.
I loved seeing the 505s on the roads as a kid in the 80's I also thought the headlights gave the car a face like it was mad-dogging the other cars with a mean look.
From over here in USA I remember the co.'s line of cars being sold here in the 70's to early 80's as have really smooth rides. Anyone out there can explane why that pulled out of USA. ?
US sales were between 10,000 - 20,000 a year depending on the year. More then Saab but less then Volvo but the introduction of the 405 put the nail in the coffin.
In the U.S. we pronounce bologna, bull-own-ee?? We do have problems pronoucing things here. Evo5dave, why do you think your poo don't stink? What do you drive? Besides my Peugeot 405Mi16, I've got a '76 L-82 Corvette, a '81 Fiat Convertible, and a '98 Pontiac Grand Prix. While they are completely different kinds of cars, the Peugeot holds it's own. Even against my friends EVO.
Good for you. I am not sure what relevance your car ownership has but I am happy for you. However, decades of abysmal JD Power (UK) survey rankings reinforce my point about Peugeots quite effectively.
My Dad had one of these when i was a little kid living in South AFrica in the 80's. How the hell are you going to sell a car if you call it a POOH-GEOT??
I don't think they could go back in the states as their cars are really designed for Euro market and especially for France. Any way, it is not only a matter of technical stuff but just business. I wonder how the PSA group could take such a risk. DO U remember the first Renault in the States? Crap.Just because the cars were not design to cope with the road profile and heavy duty running for miles. Now Nissan is belonging to Renault and they don't deal directly with the states.
There is too much risk to sell cars in the states that are not fulfilling the customer expectations.
What will you do with a single car and no one for repairing it. Too bad man if you like those PSA cars. dig this: a corvette is sold arround 60000 € in Eu. It is not a mistake ! Sometimes I which I could go to the ststes ;-)
Thats where most UK 504/505s ended up. They were worthless bangers in the uk, but found a ready market in africa. worth money now however as people have cottoned on to the fact they are worth money as exports
These cars are collectors in France, now. Very few remains. 2011 Peugeots have nothing in common with these antique machines.

vigo, spain
Guangzhou, China
Los Andes, Chile
Villa Bosch, Argentina
Cairo, Egypt
Enfield, New South Wales, Australia
Jakarta, Indonesia (1986-1997)

But the GTI version looks much better!
And one point thats why the 505 didnt well is that he had only a V6 and not a 5.7 V8 Hemi.
In Germany at that Time a V6 was like a V8 440cui in the USA :D

Old commercials make me want to buy cars. New ones are mostly about fuel economy and package deals.
This beast is here to put a smile on your face, to enjoy every ride. Monthly payments and gas prices don't even come to mind.

Ford is a disaster , rust after 5-6 years.
No second-hand value.
Crap.
I live in Sweden which as a rough climate, french cars are very popular here.
So it has nothing to do with roads or climate.
It has to do with quality.
Look what Ford did to our Volvo cars.
Now the Volvos are the same crappy quality as Ford, and that says a lot.
