You have to understand "institutional" hatred. Every public event in Iran starts out with "Death to the U.S. Death to Israel."

He doesn't seem to have any animosity towards the Israeli but seemed afraid of what his superiors could do to him if he even shook his hand. Um. I find that lots of people are defending the Iranian contestant by saying, he's afraid of what will happen to him when he gets back to Iran. HELLO, THAT'S EVEN WORSE! The problem isn't this particular weightlifter, the problem is a society and regime that would punish one for shaking the hands of an Israeli . If you defend the contestant on that ground, in that same breath you impugn the regime ten times worse.

At least the Iranian stood during the playing of Hatikvah--he could be punished for that. I actually feel sorry for the athlete. He doesn't seem to have any animosity towards the Israeli but seemed afraid of what his superiors could do to him if he even shook his hand. In the Olympics, the Iranian teams wouldn't even compete if they had to compete against Israel. I think they should have been expelled from the Olympics for that.

Totally snubbed by the Iranian, and the Pole announcer didn't bother to state the name of the winning country. It's sad to see that the hate is ingrained so deeply that they can't show signs of sportsmanship on a world stage. It's not about land or anything else material. It's about pure, whole, never ceasing and unconditional hatred.

Seeing Sergio with tears in his eyes, made me want to cry as well. Even in a world weight lifting event, the Israeli's get spurned by some of the contestants. The deep hatred many of the Arab countries have for Israel and Jews is evident even here as the Iranian refuses to shake the Israeli's hand. How pathetic. In the end, the Iranian was punished anyways for standing next to the Israeli.

I just hear Jose Aznar speak on the defense of Israel. He is the former PM of Spain. He spoke with such conviction about supporting democracies like Israel. He was a few years older, and when we were little kids, he would let us watch him lift weights in his parents garage. Sometimes he would let us little kids ride on his back while he did push-ups.
