Also I saw someone mention you can get noises like that by using the power adapter while you have the firewire cable plugged in rather than using power from the firewire cable alone.
it could be dirty contacts. I worked in an electronic shop years ago and you'd be surprised what kind of noises would go away simply with a shot of contact spray for electronics.
Sure these units may glitch out at times...but hey damn, they sound so freaking GOOD. They've got some kind of magic working under the hood. I just had to return a MOTU 828MKII I bought used from Guitar Center because the display blew out. Bought an Ultralite MK3 from ebay (pretty much the same unit in half the space). If this one breaks down, too, I wouldn't hesitate to look for another MOTU. I'll just deal with it, and will never compromise on the quality of sound MOTU provides.
well, thats some shit...i just got an imac and thought about getting motu...maybe not, after seeing this...by the way,ive been running my trusty m-audio delta66 omni studio since 1999,never had a problem...hope everything worked out..ciao
Motu sucks ass two of my friends have them and they both broken down and one 828mk2 does not even recognize it with the new drivers, the other one is a ultralite MK3 firewire not hybrid and that shit died also Shame on motu, I have a profire 610 and has not died on me never still kicking.
@hilato this problem is simply solved by turning the 828mkii on after the computer has booted. it seems like the motu drivers are either ignored during start up, or load before the local audio drivers do then get replaced by the locals.
just start your comp first, then turn on the 828, should werk.
Popping trim nobs are caused when the gain is raised or lowered from one discrete value to another, say +34dB to +35bB. What you hear is the inherent noise of the preamp snapping from one level to another. If you had an analog gain potentiometer you wouldn't hear this.
They designed it this way so you can control it from software, its lighter, and i believe its cheaper and easier to implement. They also assumed that you wouldn't change the preamp gain during recording or performance.
Yes, I have the same issue. I've had mine replaced by MOTU and the second unit does the same thing. I'm told all of the mk3 versions do this. maybe a firmware update will fix this?
I had the same problem on my Ultralite mk3 but one the trim knob has been set up you don't touch it anymore, so finally that's not a so big deal.

Did you upgrade it to the newest Firmware version? 1.15 I think is the newest, there could be newer one now.
I had popping and crankling problem and that fixed with firmware update.

I've been looking for an interface for a while now and I settled for the ultralite mk3... now i'm having my doubts. Any suggestions?
Should i stick with my decision? Should i search for something else? If so, know anything that might be just as good?
Thanks

don't do it. not until you see motu give people answers for why the utralite crackles frequently.
so far I've been unable to find a solution, but I can sell you mine if you like ;)
