Guenchev sets four world records, and becomes the heaviest guy to ever lift 3 x bodyweight! He actually topped the amazing performance by Naim, but tested positive and was tossed out. Very, very sad. I've always wondered if the Russians were up to something. I still consider Guenchev's performance to be one of the greatest of all-time, even though it "doesn't count". They were all doping, weren't they? I missed seeing the legendary Mikhail Petrov, whom Guenchev replaced. Where are these guys now
All elite athletes in a physical sport at world level are on some sort of performance enhancer that contributes to their sport. Majority being anabolic-androgenic steroids, blood doping and diuretics.
There's nothing wrong with it, intensity and frequency of training when on steroids are so high that 'cheating' athletes work harder than clean athletes.
(I'm not for or against steroids, but I think it sucks when people get disqualified because they are bad hiders)
That middle red - where did that come from? I've watched it a couple times, he was a little shaky in the jerk, but didn't unlock at all - pretty bush league call (even though he got the lift).
I'm sure he knew that he was taking a substance as to make you lose weight, but maybe he didn't know that that losing weight substance could enhance your performance too. He seemed really excited winning that competition as if he natural worked hard for that.
Wasn't he the junior record holder in the snatch in the middleweight class?
Inspite of Guenchev getting suspended after competition, I still like watching this guy. I realized that he had to be on some kind of substance, not because of what he lifted, but how poised he was after his lift, wasn't breathing hard or anything. As if nothing had ever happened.
I also realized that the diuretic substance he was taking makes you lose weight so that he could drop down to a lighter weight class.
@doctorrhys NO 1988 was both, in 1994 winter sports started in different yr to summer
