I'm a hunter, and in California national forests there are hardcore Mexican drug smugglers that grow weed on public land where us hunters go to hunt with automatic rifles and their own camps set up. I don't think there's a such thing as a "gateway drug" that concept is just ridiculous. I drink alcohol but it never got into my head doing so that I should try cigarettes too.. or weed, or ecstasy or cocaine or whatever. That whole "gateway drug" mentality comes from the perception of addicts who will do anything to get the feeling they seek but addiction is an entirely different issue on it's own, just like there are alcoholics, shopaholics, hoarders, gambling addicts, not exclusive to drugs.
My only problem with this is that I've seen a lot of really smart people while I was growing up start smoking weed and, over a few months of heavy use, turning into a completely unmotivated burnout. Marijuana (like most other illegal drugs) is illegal because the government gets it's money by cycling drugs to shipping, who then send it to the trafficers, and finally to the distributers. In recent times, however, the masses call for it has become too much for the government to sweep under the rug, so they're slowly caving in and decriminalizing it. Our country will REALLY be in debt when weed becomes legal nation wide.

Heres how this fucking works. When you legalize drugs, you take a SIGNIFICANT market away from gangs, and put it into the economy. Reduce funding for crime + economic growth = less crime. This is true in every case, WITH EVERY FUCKING DRUG. It doesn't matter what the drug does, if people want it, they will get it; from you, or from gangs. Choose through the law.

The thing that scares me more than legalized Marijuana is Corporate Controled marijuana ! Do you really want mass produced weed with messed up pesticides ? Do you want Monsanto making GMO weed ? These aren't like the guy you went to college with who grew it to make some money, they grow millions of dollars in weed, and they'll kill anyone who threatens their business.
I think these guys need to be stopped, and then focus on the other drugs. Like I said, the smokers aren't the problem, the pot is in the sense as long as there's market, this will happen. It is a two-faced type of thing. If there weren't these smugglers, there wouldn't be a problem; but since there is, we have a problem.

I don't know what to think really. Pot does cause a lot of problems. The people smoking it don't, but the smugglers and hardcore distributers do..
I'm a hunter, and in California national forests there are hardcore Mexican drug smugglers that grow weed on public land where us hunters go to hunt with automatic rifles and their own camps set up. They take dumps on the land which flows into the water, shoot up people who get close to the camp, and when the weeds harvested, leave all the trash.

@RLewisH Right. But the only reason the hardcore Mexican drug smugglers exist is because the illegality of marijuana. If it was legal the Mexican drug smugglers would instantly be out of business because their competition would instantly increase exponentially.
I honestly think that some in government must either be so incompetent that they can't understand this simple concept, or they prefer to have drug wars. Instead of being sensible, they throw more troops and warfare at the problem.

Carolla makes some great points but fact is the law is the law. If you have more than the maximum weed allowed on you, you are basically saying "I will distribute weed" according to the law. You live in a country with a civil code, it means you agree to follow it. I think weed should be legalized and considered as if it were alcohol. You cant have more than a certain ammount while driving, you cant be high in public and you can't re-sell it in the streets. Government controlled weed =best option

I smoked weed for 8-10 years. It's hard to get away from after smoking for so long. However I think it should be decriminalized to a certain extent. I'm a good guy... haven't touched it in two years. Nixon can kiss the back of my nutsack.

@SoCalFlya that's a common misconception. it messes with short term memory while your high. you remember every thing you did when you sober up, plus it doesn't effect your memory when completely sober. i have a 3.8 gpa right now and i smoke weed, i'm pretty sure that it's just a government scare tactic.

I don't think there's a such thing as a "gateway drug" that concept is just ridiculous. I drink alcohol but it never got into my head doing so that I should try cigarettes too.. or weed, or ecstasy or cocaine or whatever. That whole "gateway drug" mentality comes from the perception of addicts who will do anything to get the feeling they seek but addiction is an entirely different issue on it's own, just like there are alcoholics, shopaholics, hoarders, gambling addicts, not exclusive to drugs.

My only problem with this is that I've seen a lot of really smart people while I was growing up start smoking weed and, over a few months of heavy use, turning into a completely unmotivated burnout. I really think it can fuck you up, but it's your choice if you want to fuck yourself up, and that's the important thing.

This anti-pharmaceutical statements really need to think about what they're saying. Drug companies makes drugs and they would have no moral objections to selling marijuana as well, and they could do it much better than any small time drug pusher.
