I'm pretty skinny but I'm flabby and I want to start on my biceps, triceps, thighs, and abs. As for the abs, I can see them but they don't pop out like some guys'. Is that because of fat covering them or because of their size? Please help because I need to get in shape.

@alecazam3567 May be because of water covering it (I don't know how they look, so can't tell :P). The good way to lose water is to drink loads of water, and reduce your salt intake. But don't just take my advice, google it! :)
If you do your research you'll find out that fat can't become muscle and muscle can't become fat. They are 2 totally different body tissues. The whole idea of turning fat into muscle is a myth. The reason why big people often lose weight and then look muscular is because they have muscle underneath their bodyfat, so when they lose the fat you can actually see their muscle. But the fat didn't magically turn into muscle.
Great vid thanks, I recently wanted to start to take protein complements to gain some body mass for my back/shoulders, but i didn't because i was told it would reduce the chances of my abs showing, taking the proteine powder will reduce my abs showing? what should i do? please guide me
Any cardio works, could be running, walking, bike riding, swimming, cardio machines at the gym. Bottom line is that you do it regularly and work up a good sweat.

Thanks for the help! I am a floor coach at Golds gym and the main thing people ask me about are how do I get ripped abbs. I have a few work outs that I show them. All these workouts are great!
A quick question, I'm 14 and trying to get abs, I have been doing various workouts for about a month now, still nothing really. I can see my top and middle abs a bit when I'm laying down but not when I'm standing up. Anyways, I can't really go to a gym so I need a workout or routine I can do from home, tips?
At your age you are better off focusing on trying to get bigger and stronger all over. The abs are just stabilizer muscles for your body, they should not be the main emphasis of your workouts. Focus on working the big muscles of the chest, back, legs, etc. as well as the abs and you'll get better overall results.
It comes down to genetics. Some people's abs are shaped in such a way that when they get ripped they have 8 visible abs. But most people have 6 visible abs.
@leemhayward Another question, why my abs shape are weird? The upper pack 1st and 2nd pack have a good shape, but from 1st pack connect to 3rd pack down the horizontal line are not full cut trough. So it look like my 1st and 3rd pack look like they are connect together... did you get what I mean, cause is hard for me to explain with about letting you see the picture. Any information about it or is nature?
Again, it's genetics. We can't change our muscle shape. All we can do is my our muscles bigger and lose the bodyfat that's covering them. But the natural shape just comes down to genetics.
It could be from lack of sodium in your diet. I know if I sweat a lot and don't eat enough salt I'll get cramps, especially when doing ab work. Try adding a little bit of extra table salt to your food to give your body more sodium.
Mr. Hayward i would like to know if you could do your abs on an everyday bases or should it be more of every other day? I have been doing abs everyday for about a month and i have seen a difference prior to ordering your program. but know i am getting very serious of bulking up getting more ripped and just not afraid of taking my shirt off in public and seeing a barrel of midsection rather than that ripped 6 pack.
@Leemhayward I love ur videos man!!!! Really helpful cuz I use them in my workout. I wanted to know do u have to be sore after every workout in order to gain muscle?
No, you do not have to get sore in order to build muscle. Generally, it's only beginners who get sore from their workouts. The more advanced you get the less soreness you'll experience.
i want to ask i do ab workout 3 times a week and i go to the gym 5 times how many times per week should i do abs workout ? , because i think that i am overloading my ab muscles by doing excercises 3 times a week
what would u say is the best exercise for the middle abdominals? ive personally been workin my abs more often n working on my food intake as well as cardio and it seems my lower abs and upper abs r making alot of progress, although my mid section around my bellybutton has more fat there then the others and i cant seem to find a good workout that can help specifically that area
@c1rcaskater911 That's diet, bro. Seriously. You have to hit the diet super hard. It's a crazy discipline if you're body doesn't naturally show muscle. Good luck to you.
how come when I feel under my layer of fat I can feel solid muscle but it isnt defined in 6 abs, I feel if I lost my stomach fat i still woudnt have proper 6 pack?
Bottom line, you'll never know what your abs look like until you lose the fat that is covering them. For most guys it takes at least 3 to 6 months of hardcore dieting and fat loss training to get ripped abs.
hello- im a girl and i have lower- ab fat thats really making my figure look bad- and i cant go to the gym- what excercises or tips would you reccomend to get rid of this?
Fat loss works the same for both men and women. It comes down to eating a healthy diet, cardio, and weight training. Very often weight training is the missing link that a lot of women neglect and it holds them back from building the tight lean body they want.
To get visible abs you need to lose the fat that's covering them through diet and cardio. Simply doing "more" ab work is not going to give you faster results.
That pain you are feeling is probably your hip flexor muscles, if it's just limited to certain exercises, than just avoid the moves that cause you pain and do other ab exercises instead. Not every exercise works for every body. There are literally dozens of abdominal exercise variations you can do, choose the ones that allow you to work the muscles without causing pain.
Considering that your abs are stabilizer muscles wouldn't putting your hands under your hips to stabilize yourself just take away from the exercise and be cheating?
I guess it all depends on what you consider "cheating"... Yes, placing your hands under your hips with exercises like lying leg raises does make the exercise easier and more comfortable to perform. But it also allows you to perform more reps, get less back pain, and personally I wouldn't do the exercise without that little bit of extra support. So maybe it's "cheating", but in this case it's cheating to help get better abs... Is that so wrong?
Sounds like you need to stretch out your hips more. This is an area that can get very tight because most people don't do any specific work or stretches for their hips.
YOU are AWESOME!!! Very helpful, and very talented, I just subscribed to you, and I hope everyone does too.
I have a question, Is it okay to do your ab workout everyday since that area is usually repairing ona daily bases, or how often should i do my abs? maybe every other day?
I personally work my abs 2 times per week. That's plenty of muscle stimulation, after all the abs are not an area you want to "get bigger", most people just want them leaner and that comes from diet and cardio.
i m 16, nd my height is 5"8, should i start doing exercises in GYM, as i heard from many that doing exercise in this age will limit my height ? also i get fats at side at the lower portion of body, so can i tell me some home exercise to loose it ?
Weight training doesn't affect your height. That's a bunch of BS, you are going to grow to be a certain height based on your genetics, not from what exercises you do or don't do. You can workout at your age, I personally started working out when I was 12 years old.
IM 15 and i weight about 140 pounds and have a a little fat belly and im a skiny guy i do a mix of ab exercises and so fat nothign is happening only when i flex i see my top abs u got eny tips?
I think if you asked around, practically every guy would like to have visible abs, it's just that most of them are to lazy to do the work required to get them... So wanting to get abs is totally normal.
@leemhayward yeah i can see them now i was just a shapeless ectomorph before but after i done ab excercises twice a week i can see two of them now.
just a question though around the belly button area i find i can't workout that area is there an excercise to workout the belly button area because i want to get an 8 pack.
holy cow man, I want to thank you so much! I have done an hour of abs doing these workouts for about two weeks, and Im already noticing a huge improvement in definition
Lee, im having problems with geting rid of the fat on my lover abs....no problems with my upper abs because i can see my 4 pack.....can you write me some exersises to get rid of the fat over the lower abs. Please
Diet & Cardio... The secret to losing bodyfat is dieting longer. Even when following a "perfect" fat loss routine you can only lose 1-2 pounds of bodyfat per week. So the trick is to just stick to it long enough to actually get the results you want. Me personally, I usually follow a fat loss diet for 16 weeks before a bodybuilding competition in order to get ripped.
The ab-crunch at the lat-pulldown was a really good idea! Haven't thought of that before, I've always had trouble actually feeling this exercise in the abs at all. Off to the gym!
@leemhayward Haha thanks. It's cuz im already skinny, and i'm trying to get bigger. But I also want a 6 pack. And I dont want to have to do too much cardio because it'll make me skinnier. I was hoping I would only have to work out my abs at this point .
No, I wouldn't recommend trying to lose weight at your age. Keep active with regular exercise and make sure to good healthy food while avoiding sweets and junk food.
I can, but I'll be honest I'm not a huge fan of home workouts. I just feel you can make much better progress by training at a gym. Obviously the equipment is much better, but the atmosphere and being in a high energy environment really helps you to get the most out of your workouts.
It will certainly help, but depending on how much fat you have to lose you'll probably have to step up to a more advanced diet and training program to really get ripped abs.
It all depends on how strong you are. There is no set wight to lift based on age alone. It's a very individual thing. All you can do is start off light and progress up gradually lifting within your means. That applies to everyone, regardless of age.
You can use the ab machines that you have available at your gym. The main thing is that you work the ab muscles under resistance. You can mix and match the machines your use.
do you work certain muscle groups each day, or do you do multiple areas every workout? i typically just split it up into upper one day, lower the next cuz i'm strapped for time, but with summer coming i have more time for lifting everyday
How long do you typically spend in the gym after doing three muscle groups such as Chest, Shoulders and Triceps? If i do that split i would be in the gym for like 2.5 hours. I feel this is over doing it and Doing triceps are weaker after doing Chest. Any comments Lee?
at the exercise at 3.27 to adjust the weight are there any percentages of weight you should use? like lifting 10% of your own weight or are any other things like your Body Mass Index also involved?
There is no magic formula, just start off light and do several sets going a little heavier each time. You'll find how much weight you can do for a set number of reps. This is how you go about finding your working weights for all exercises.
As for strength gains you should strive to see progress every week (i.e. getting more reps with your ab exercises). But in order to see your abs you'll need to lose the excess bodyfat covering them. Ideally you'll need to get your bodyfat percentage to under 10% in order to see your abs.
The best way to burn fat is by including strength training, cardio, and a high protein diet. If you want a complete fat loss training system to follow just check out my Extreme Fat Loss Program on my website LeeHayward*com
Basically your abs are like any muscle group and need to be training with progressive resistance. If you just do endless reps (i.e. hundreds of crunches) you'll plateau and your results will come to a stand still. You need to add resistance and keep the reps lower in order to make progress.
That's a sign that your back is weak. Try doing more work for your lower back such as hyper extensions, deadlifts, good mornings, etc. and over time that will help strengthen your lower back.
mr. hayward, im recently doing some crunches and sit ups but everytime i do it i always getting abdominal cramps even if im hydrated..any suggestions to prevent abdominal cramps?
Break down your ab work over several sets. So rather than doing a few hard high rep sets, do several smaller easier sets. The total volume to your abs will be the same, but it should allow you to build up your work capacity without cramping up.
Personally I wouldn't waste my money on infomercial abdominal gadgets. Just plain old fashion ab exercises like where shown in the video is all you need to train your abs. But to lose the fat you need to nail down a solid fat loss diet plan and incorporate daily cardio in addition to your regular weight training workouts.
They are good for working both your upper and lower abs. There are literally dozens of ab exercises that you can do to work the muscles. But the key to getting abs is simply losing the bodyfat that's covering them.
thank you for this, I have been looking for ways toexpand the ab workout. I actually do a few of these workouts already so it is nice to see that I am doing something right. One thing that concerns me is the obliques though, I noticed you didn't pay much attention to that, or is that section being worked through these exercises?
All abdominal exercises will bring in the obliques as secondary muscles. But I purposely don't do direct oblique work as I naturally have a thick waist and I don't want to make it any thicker.
There's no secret or magic about abs, you simply need to work out your ass off until you see some progression. Cheers!

AdmiralSkippy 5 months ago
@AdmiralSkippy

When I do the leg exercise (lift my legs up) the area above my right hip clicks and sometimes locks up, please help
Killzor97 5 months ago
@Killzor97
Sounds like you need to stretch out your hips more. This is an area that can get very tight because most people don't do any specific work or stretches for their hips.
leemhayward 5 months ago
YOU are AWESOME!!! Very helpful, and very talented, I just subscribed to you, and I hope everyone does too.
I have a question, Is it okay to do your ab workout everyday since that area is usually repairing ona daily bases, or how often should i do my abs? maybe every other day?
Aiiwolf 5 months ago
@Aiiwolf
I personally work my abs 2 times per week. That's plenty of muscle stimulation, after all the abs are not an area you want to "get bigger", most people just want them leaner and that comes from diet and cardio.

i m 16, nd my height is 5"8, should i start doing exercises in GYM, as i heard from many that doing exercise in this age will limit my height ? also i get fats at side at the lower portion of body, so can i tell me some home exercise to loose it ?
adarsh221294 6 months ago
@adarsh221294
Weight training doesn't affect your height. That's a bunch of BS, you are going to grow to be a certain height based on your genetics, not from what exercises you do or don't do. You can workout at your age, I personally started working out when I was 12 years old.

SuperDanielb 6 months ago
@SuperDanielb

Lee when I do leg raises I get this burn in my quads which forces me to stop, is there any particular way of getting rid of this?
Perhaps adding a slight bend to my legs?
Thanks!
Hiyrustrider 6 months ago
@Hiyrustrider
Yes, you can bend your knees and make the exercise easier to do. But as you get in better shape you should strive to do them with straight legs.

Without like a machine or fancy equipment, how can you tell if your body fat is low enough to have a 6 pack?
ginn3dolphins 6 months ago
@ginn3dolphins
Look in the mirror, if you have a roll of belly fat hanging over your belt, then you aren't lean enough :-)
Seriously though, if you are lean enough for six pack abs you'll see them.
leemhayward 6 months ago
@leemhayward Haha thanks. It's cuz im already skinny, and i'm trying to get bigger. But I also want a 6 pack. And I dont want to have to do too much cardio because it'll make me skinnier. I was hoping I would only have to work out my abs at this point .

@xM0nk33y
I can, but I'll be honest I'm not a huge fan of home workouts. I just feel you can make much better progress by training at a gym. Obviously the equipment is much better, but the atmosphere and being in a high energy environment really helps you to get the most out of your workouts.

UFCMexicanFighter1 7 months ago

It will certainly help, but depending on how much fat you have to lose you'll probably have to step up to a more advanced diet and training program to really get ripped abs.
leemhayward 7 months ago
Hey Lee, What weight would you recommend a 15 year old to be lifting
castleview123 7 months ago
@castleview123
It all depends on how strong you are. There is no set wight to lift based on age alone. It's a very individual thing. All you can do is start off light and progress up gradually lifting within your means. That applies to everyone, regardless of age.
leemhayward 7 months ago
@castleview123 im 16 5'5 145lbs and bench 155, ive only been working out for 2years

Not sure if you have one of these machines at your gym, but at the YMCA I go to they have machines that essentially do the "overhead cable crunch".
They look like those (different model though). Is that the exact same thing or would I be better off to skip that machine and stick with the OCC?
AdmiralSkippy 7 months ago
@AdmiralSkippy
You can use the ab machines that you have available at your gym. The main thing is that you work the ab muscles under resistance. You can mix and match the machines your use.

do you work certain muscle groups each day, or do you do multiple areas every workout? i typically just split it up into upper one day, lower the next cuz i'm strapped for time, but with summer coming i have more time for lifting everyday
btowndawgz2 8 months ago
@btowndawgz2
Yes, typically I'll split up body parts like this:
Workout 1: Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps
Workout 2: Back & Biceps
Workout 3: Legs & Abs
leemhayward 8 months ago
@leemhayward
How long do you typically spend in the gym after doing three muscle groups such as Chest, Shoulders and Triceps? If i do that split i would be in the gym for like 2.5 hours. I feel this is over doing it and Doing triceps are weaker after doing Chest. Any comments Lee?

at the exercise at 3.27 to adjust the weight are there any percentages of weight you should use? like lifting 10% of your own weight or are any other things like your Body Mass Index also involved?
vanburikwouter 8 months ago
@vanburikwouter
There is no magic formula, just start off light and do several sets going a little heavier each time. You'll find how much weight you can do for a set number of reps. This is how you go about finding your working weights for all exercises.
leemhayward 8 months ago
How many sets should i do for the bodyweight excercises?

allforHimforHeisall 8 months ago
@allforHimforHeisall
You only need to train your abs twice a week. They are just like any other muscle group and need rest and recovery as well.
leemhayward 8 months ago
Q
how long to get result??
ijoyize 8 months ago
@ijoyize
As for strength gains you should strive to see progress every week (i.e. getting more reps with your ab exercises). But in order to see your abs you'll need to lose the excess bodyfat covering them. Ideally you'll need to get your bodyfat percentage to under 10% in order to see your abs.
leemhayward 8 months ago
Q.
before you start doing this should you get rid of belly fat first or will the exercises burn the fat away while doing them?
second question - would protein help in getting the abs faster or is it used just for muscle recovery ?
Antun01 9 months ago
@Antun01
The best way to burn fat is by including strength training, cardio, and a high protein diet. If you want a complete fat loss training system to follow just check out my Extreme Fat Loss Program on my website LeeHayward*com

XxCokeVanillaxX 9 months ago
will you get a six pack abs if you do this every day for 3 months?
GoodAssVideos 9 months ago
@GoodAssVideos
What will determine if you get a six pack or not is your level of bodyfat. Get your bodyfat down under 10% and you'll be able to see your abs.

is it true that doing weight lifting before cardio is more effective as it makes cardio workout more effective?
Rothschild27 9 months ago
im sorry Mr Hayward
i am not able to hear u out clearly in the video when u explain why doing too much reps for abs is not good
can u explain here?
thanks aplenty
Rothschild27 9 months ago
@Rothschild27
Basically your abs are like any muscle group and need to be training with progressive resistance. If you just do endless reps (i.e. hundreds of crunches) you'll plateau and your results will come to a stand still. You need to add resistance and keep the reps lower in order to make progress.

when i do my planks, i tend to see that my back starts hurting before i feel any burn in the abs. what should i do to prevent the back pain?
HelloMyNamesBlake 9 months ago
@HelloMyNamesBlake
That's a sign that your back is weak. Try doing more work for your lower back such as hyper extensions, deadlifts, good mornings, etc. and over time that will help strengthen your lower back.

mr. hayward, im recently doing some crunches and sit ups but everytime i do it i always getting abdominal cramps even if im hydrated..any suggestions to prevent abdominal cramps?
incesticide24 9 months ago
@incesticide24
Break down your ab work over several sets. So rather than doing a few hard high rep sets, do several smaller easier sets. The total volume to your abs will be the same, but it should allow you to build up your work capacity without cramping up.
leemhayward 9 months ago

Question
My XC/Track coach made us do Core workout and he made us do leg raises without putting our hands underneath. Is that a good or bad thing?
ipfreely122 9 months ago
@ipfreely122
You can do them either way, but I find keeping your hands under your butt makes you more stable as you do leg raises.
leemhayward 9 months ago
@RangeBlitzBros
Personally I wouldn't waste my money on infomercial abdominal gadgets. Just plain old fashion ab exercises like where shown in the video is all you need to train your abs. But to lose the fat you need to nail down a solid fat loss diet plan and incorporate daily cardio in addition to your regular weight training workouts.
leemhayward 9 months ago
Mr. Hayward, what is your opinion about bicycle crunches?
saderguy 9 months ago
@saderguy
They are good for working both your upper and lower abs. There are literally dozens of ab exercises that you can do to work the muscles. But the key to getting abs is simply losing the bodyfat that's covering them.

when you do the contractions should you do them slowly, like in strength training, or should you do them quickly, like for explosive strength?

@pigalinski
You are better off using more slower and controlled form with abs rather than fast explosive movements.
leemhayward 10 months ago
thank you for this, I have been looking for ways toexpand the ab workout. I actually do a few of these workouts already so it is nice to see that I am doing something right. One thing that concerns me is the obliques though, I noticed you didn't pay much attention to that, or is that section being worked through these exercises?
kuryamtl 10 months ago
@kuryamtl
All abdominal exercises will bring in the obliques as secondary muscles. But I purposely don't do direct oblique work as I naturally have a thick waist and I don't want to make it any thicker.
