You guys are out to lunch.  Taylor's clearly lucid, just look at his reaction of disbelief to Steele. The Chavez streak was unfairly maintained for years. Sweet Pea beat the clumsy oaf Chavez 12 round to 0 and was awarded a draw. The streak, by a non-black fighter with all heart and no skills, was good for the business. So it was kept alive. Taylor won the fight.

The ref does not know how many seconds there is left . He quiestions Taylor , Taylor did not react ; therefore fight is over . If the ref resumes the fight Chavez with one punch would of finish him .

You know something? If anyone was to blame for this it was Meldrick Taylor and this is why: Everyone knew, including Taylor, that Chavez was one of THEE most dangerous fighters that ever lived. If Taylor was winning the fight going into the 12th, why THE FUCK would he go toe-to-toe with him instead of running? Taylor was even clowning during the last minute. Taylor was so woozy after the 11th round that he almost went to the wrong corner; then, when he's sitting in the corner, his trainers are pleading with him that he NEEDED to win that round; they said that the fight hung on what he did in the 12th round. When you're beaten up like that, I'm sure you're not thinking straight; you're listening to the trainers. He thought, at that moment, he needed to win the round. Blame Lou Duva & co

For years and years, all we heard about was how much of a piece of shit Richard Steele was for stopping this fight and robbing Taylor of a victory over Chavez, which would have made him the first man to have ever beaten him. I'm suggesting, however, that if there is anyone people SHOULD be blaming, if you must blame someone, it should be Taylor for allowing himself to get NAILED. His corner didn't help, either. @MrRedskins0021 yeah right dude.. they’re just saying how it is. he stood up at 6 and nodded at 8. ending the fight for the “boxer’s safety” (which is why you call an end to a fight when somebody is standing) at 2 seconds left in the round of a fight that the boxer is winning? the announcers are right.. that is a damn unusual call. it did not make much sense at all to call the fight. he stood up in time, was winning, and 2 seconds left in the 12th round.. definitely a questionable call.

@gprix Okay, I know. Both of his hands were on the rope when he initially stands up, then has one casually on a rope. The referee definitely could have waited until TEN seconds and said, “Stand up all the way” because they aid the fighters with direction pretty often. If that is the reason, why would Steele not say “Hands off the rope, Taylor. Hands off the rope.” right as Taylor stood? He stopped it at 8 to end the fight which does not make sense. Sweet knockdown, but not a knockout.

@marmar3291 He always had both hands on the ropes. Ref gave him a 9 count, asked him twice if he was ok, and looked into his eyes from 6 inches away.And why should any ref "aid" anyone. This is not their job. Seems that people just wanted time to run out, under any excuse.The other 3 times Mel was koed, he was standing unassisted and trying to cover up, or fight back. Anyway you cut it, the man was koed.Unfair to Chavez to let time run out. Why? E for effort?

@erwue2 i can kind of see your point, but man.. the fact is he stood up at 6 seconds and nodded at 8. he wasn’t that “gone”, because you saw his confused reaction when the referee waved his hands to signal it’s over. His mouth goes “wha?”. I definitely think that with a fight this big, it certainly matters to really make that MASSIVE judgement call. There were 2 seconds left, which he could have easily lasted. The point of ending a fight is for the boxer’s safety and he was fine to finish it.

The reason the ref stopped the fight is because Taylor never respond , he took to much head damage and could've had an concussion. The ref asked him his name he never replied therefore he couldn't fight

@MrOtrevino He should have let him continue, the only reason a referee wouldn't let a fighter continue is so a fighter wouldn't have to take needless punishment, Chavez wouldn't have had enough time to land a shot. Bad call.
