I think that maybe they didn't give soundwave a personality because they wanted the other decepticons to be somewhat interesting too. I mean, he had EVERYTHING else: strength, stealth, intelligence and even his own mini-army of cassettes. He was also the only decepticon that I can remember ever really showing a strong sense of loyalty. I would say he was noble and true. In the cartoon movie, it was Soundwave who didn't abandon Megatron. Subsequently, he was NOT the one to throw him out.

Err...the Decepticon logo was designed twenty-five years before the movie version of The Fallen's face. And is clearly based on G1 Soundwave's face.

Fictionally, if you take the recent movie comics into account ONLY, then yes, it's based on the Fallen's face. But the comic creators based THAT idea on the original logo in the first place. : )

that makes no sense. why did they use soundwave? He may be a fan-fav TF but he wasn't that big in the TF universe. But the fallen was one of the fist 13 transformers he joined unicron and betrayed his brothers. Making him the first ever decepticon.

You're mixing toy design from 25 years ago with fiction from today. The Decepticon logo has been around a LONG time before the character of The Fallen even existed. The whole "the Decepticon logo is the Fallen's face" was just written into the Paramount incarnation of the Transformers. It's got other origins in other continuities. But in terms of the original incarnation, the TOYS from 1984, it's based on Soundwave's face.

Actually Soundwave is pretty powerful. He beats Jazz, Prowl, and some other autobot at once in the first episode. He throws Ratchet all over the place, a few seconds after. He takes on the entire Autobot camp by himself in one episode (aided by his casseticons though), and he clearly beats the constructicon he's facing in Transformers: The Movie when they dispute over the leadership. That Soundwave is smart is just a giant plus. One wonders why Soundwave isn't second in command over Starscream.
