This is good stuff. Tip jets are extremely powerful. But they are mainly good for large wide rotor aircraft. And the engines don't have to be that powerful. Plus jet engines are good at high altitude and once a helicopter is moving forward it creates more lift. thus you can actually reduce engine power. Tip jets are indeed the best. Although you may say jets are not efficient its because these aircraft are too damn small and light. And need hi-lift airfoil rotors.

the problem with this misleadingly simple idea is its fuel efficiency, any tip jet drive helicopter has always been inefficient, you are driving the rotor around by a jet acting against a fluid(air) this is never gonna be as good as a shaft driven rotor, if it was they would make all helicopters this way, also there is a noise penalty as well.................................Peter
As you can hear from the video, and my personal presence at some of these demos, they are quiet, just a hissing sound as the shock wave is at the throat of the nozzle.
I've added some links in the description above for lots more technical information.
See the AHS presentation on my website about my electric-fan-in-blade invention to get the efficiency up, however with the new Steorn ORBO fuel-less free energy motor coming out, efficiency just won't matter anymore :-) .
@hstearnsjr LOL. ORBO.. It's Carl Tilly all over again. I kinda feel sorry for the venture capitalists funding these guys. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Especially when talking about electromagnetism and thermodynamics.
Yes, I hired this guy to shoot my wedding video. Same disjointed, top-quality edit, and the bride executed a dynamic ascent from a low hover. It was a magical day for everyone.
Thanks for the reply, I'm a fixed wing pilot and looking to turn over, and been looking at a lot of different types, the simplicity of this attracts me.
I dont understand enough about retreating blade stall
Pegasus seems like the best bet. It's too bad they're not giving credit where it's due :-( . For alleviating retreating blade stall, see my patent 5,720,059 which uses the moments from an offset flapping hub to unload the retreating blade.
It is quite interesting that there have bn reports of 'black' helicopterss associated with UFO sightings that don't make any noise- clearly this is what is being used. ??
Very interesting study. Now, they only need to resolving the retreating blade stall problem, then he will become the best helicopter of the world. However, it would be great to see this helicopter in production!

seems like a simple and effective design
how about fuel eficiency compared to regular chopers?
in percentage
