The problem with Brian De Palma is that the last great film he made was 'The Untouchables' in 1987, which was his masterpiece. After he made 'The Bonfire Of The Vanities,' which flopped, it's been all downhill from there. His best work was during the 'Sisters'/'Carrie'/'Blow Out'/'Dressed To Kill'/'Scarface'/'The Untouchables' era of the late 70's and the 80's.
Most of those pictures are more likely to be the product of indiscriminate IEDs and suicide bombers attacking opposing tribes ect .. none of those pictures can be verified as the product of war crimes. I know a lot of soldiers and marines that are disgusted by the murder of civilians. You should know that sometimes only by showing the horror and worst examples of human life can any positive change occur. Perhaps things are a little easier in the UK - having recently been involved in a large scale theatrical production that required projection of wartime images of people on a massive screen, this issue came up - we got around it by asking cast members to bring us their own wartime pics from their families. This not only neatly got around the legal issues, but was very moving way of including the cast's own family history within the production.
Cuban's company is one of the few companies brave enough to distribute a file like this. But he's not going to take what he considers to be an unnecessary risk with the threat of lawsuits.
I think De Palma's comments about Cuban being "disturbed" by the photos was a little patronizing. De Palma's ass isn't on the line for those images. If he was to take full financial responsiblitly for releasing those photos, I bet he would change his mind.
Another thing which stinks is when you're a film student at a school that requires you to deliver releases for material protected under fair use. No clearance, no diploma.
I think it was a healthy exchange, showing both sides of the issue. I don't understand why photographs in the public domain would cause a problem, but, then again, people have been known to sue for the most specious of reasons. I hope this isn't just some excuse for the producers to release their cut of the film.
I love De Palma's work and regret that were being asked to watch a forced compromise of his vision, but that won't stop me from seeking out this film in the future.

If de palma needs to show pictures of dead mutilated soldiers to get his "vision" across, maybe he's not such a great film maker after all. Not to mention the fact that it's disgusting and disrespectful. He doesn't deserve to live in this country.

You should know that sometimes only by showing the horror and worst examples of human life can any positive change occur. Disrespectful how about sending our brave soldiers to fight a war based on lies, then underfunding them and cutting benefits to them while doing it. There is no constitutional right to not be offended. Anyone who examines our freedom deserves to live here more so than those who believe in doing whatever they are told by the establishment.

It's out of respect for soldiers' lives that he would show them. For to show them is to show the truth of war. And to show the truth of war is to show 'the soldier's' demise stripped of romance. It is this romance which leads so many to their deaths, and it is one which this generation is fostering a growing distaste for - with the help of people like DePalma. This is why the images are important.

It's easy to have an opinion on something like this when it's not your brother or dad lying there dead in a movie who's only purpose is to demean them.
Only people who've never been a soldier or marine have these odd ideas of the romance of war and glory in death and all that shit. You people have watched to many war movies and believed them to be an accurate portrayal of war.

I do believe that's the point, that lots of people sign up to be soldiers because of the glorified way the job has been sold to them through movies, the media and TV recruitment ads. The more gritty, horrible reality on film and TV the better, to dispel the romance and artificial glory.

I haven't seen the film, but I was told it is about soldiers raping and murdering innocent people. If I'm wrong, I apologize, and please correct me. So to show the movie, then show these pictures of real soldiers, doesn't that somehow imply that they are evil as well? If not, could someone tell me what the connection between the message of the movie, and the real soldiers is. Also, why not get permission from the families?

I know war isnt like a video game or a john wayne movie but they go through all the horrors of war seeing friends dead, killing and trying to stay alive. Then go home no one knows shit about what they went through.Then a guy in Beverly hills nows all about Iraq? Shows the people u fought with and urself as pedophiles who feel up children at checkpoints (Check the trailer). That will make the public really support our troops. I can't believe u would say "Out of respect".

Perhaps things are a little easier in the UK - having recently been involved in a large scale theatrical production that required projection of wartime images of people on a massive screen, this issue came up - we got around it by asking cast members to bring us their own wartime pics from their families. This not only neatly got around the legal issues, but was very moving way of including the cast's own family history within the production.

Cuban's company is one of the few companies brave enough to distribute a file like this. But he's not going to take what he considers to be an unnecessary risk with the threat of lawsuits.
I think De Palma's comments about Cuban being "disturbed" by the photos was a little patronizing. De Palma's ass isn't on the line for those images. If he was to take full financial responsiblitly for releasing those photos, I bet he would change his mind.

Another thing which stinks is when you're a film student at a school that requires you to deliver releases for material protected under fair use. No clearance, no diploma.

I think it was a healthy exchange, showing both sides of the issue. I don't understand why photographs in the public domain would cause a problem, but, then again, people have been known to sue for the most specious of reasons. I hope this isn't just some excuse for the producers to release their cut of the film.
I love De Palma's work and regret that were being asked to watch a forced compromise of his vision, but that won't stop me from seeking out this film in the future.
