It's not a hologram, it's a much simpler technique that dates back to the 1800's called "Peppers Ghost". Basically, there's a sheet of clear plastic hung up across the front of the stage, and the images are projected on it. That's why the music seems so quiet in the first part.. too much volume causes the plastic to vibrate and spoils the illusion.

And I loved the Gorillaz, the special effects they use are sublime! I wanted to see more of Gorillaz in this performance -gimme more!
