  • One thing we've found out on YT, which gives us access to music like never before, is how different studio and live are. Some bands and musicians sound terrible live. Careless harmonies and solos, missed runs... Others sound exactly the same. It may be note for note - or not, yet make you wonder if it's live.

The Dixie Chicks are like this. Great musicians who bring along a truckload of backup talent. The live concerts I've seen (on TV) sound exactly like the recording. This has +'s and -'s.

  • I lived next door to Nicky Hopkins Father in San Diego. His dad was cool,we talked very little about Nicky just things in general.

  • Joli, you should know since you daddy was Dino.

Just a great collaboration between all the instruments, but especially Nicky and of course John.

Sounds good raw here but fantastic on Shady Grove which IMHO is one of the best albums of all time right up there with their 1st.

  • Trust me this question arises all the time and i know for a fact.... It was live... Joli Valenti

  • Had NOTHING to do with Valenti, this is Hopkins and Cipollina.

  • this may be live, but I swear the piano is the exact same as on the studio recording. I suspect track recording being done here.

  • Possibly, but a couple things to note:

In the studio version keyboards are heavily multitracked, making comparison difficult.Obvious dissimilarities between live version and studio version could be accounted for by this.

Pitch and timing are different.Easy enough to alter with reel to reel.

More to the point is this version seems to be recorded in an amateurish fashion. Input levels were audibly decreased during the recording. I digitally "fixed" this file.

Probably live. Hopkins was a pro.

  • gad zooks

someone in the booth may have been...dare i say... loaded.

    oops
