Nice work on that crossing, I think you could make a small fortune if you sold limited rights to Hornby or Bachmann to make production versions of this model. I know I would certainly buy one if they did. But this is what a proper level crossing should be like rather than that dated R636 that Hornby continues to sell even to this day.
@241nb Because this is only one of the fifteen boards that make up the whole layout, and I only had room to set up one board for testing. When I get time I will record a new video with the complete layout and you can enjoy the crossing with a full length APT passing :-)
yes could you make me one of those level crossings like the one in the video but once you have made me one could i pay you by postal order like a few months later
See previous comments about the amount of time it took to make, yes I *could* make one but the cost would run into something like a thousand pounds, there is about one hundred hours work in that crossing
@themymysteryman101 I know exactly what noise you mean, thats is a Yodalarm. Most crossings use the Yodalarm YO 3 and YO 5 sounders. They are small reddy/orange plastic square boxes with round holes in the middle which are fixed on the back of the level crossing signs with screws. They neenaw very loudly at 112db's and they have 32 different siren sounds. They used to use the same ones in my school as fire alarms years ago which used to "eweeweeeweeee" at a loud volume. I know what you mean.
It's a hand built model not a kit and is not available to buy in any shop. I can build them if anyone wants one, cost would be around 1000 GBP. Yes that is THREE zeroes, there is a LOT of hours work in it.
Fantastic effort there, without a doubt the best crossing model I have ever seen. Keep up the good work, I also have the express models version but it is not a patch on this!
This is a handbuilt model built by me. The barriers make use of an etch to my own design from Shawplan that help to make the top and bottom of the barriers.
The electronics for the lights are hand built from TTL logic and timer ICs. The barriers are powered by RC servos controlled by a MERG servo4 module.
The sound is electronically generated from an MP3 module.
Interesting to compare this with the express models one shown in Mattmaz2's response. Note that the express version doesn't have the correct light sequence (no proving test where both reds flash together before starting to alternate) and I think the express barriers drop too fast. Nice to see someone else with a working crossing though. I hope we might start seeing more on layouts
The amount of time it took to build it, for me to make one to order would run in to a four figure sum, I don't beleive people would really want to pay that much for a scenic item on a model railway
That is amazing, you should put that into production. I tried to do this when I was at school my final year tech project but I only got as far as the wiring. I made the uprights for the lights and barriers to be attached out of printed circuit board and barriers from Hornby. Never did come up with a way of making the barriers go up or down. Can I you build me one please?
it's one board of 15 that make up the whole layout. See the APT clips in my other videos and also the Abbotswood visits Ravensclyffe clips by user d803Albion for more of the whole layout
That wasnt the sound I was expecting for a crossing. Thought it would be like the modern "nee naw" sounds. Also, would have loved to see a 309 shoot across the crossing :-) Fantastic barriers though

The sounds wrong thats a bell not a "eweeeweeeweeeweeeweeew" (hard to expalian lol)
themymysteryman101 7 months ago
@themymysteryman101
the layout is set in 1983 when level crossings had bells rather than warblers.

This looks as if it's just a module - but then again, the camera can't prove everything.
I'll be looking for a modern-style electrified layout to run my stock on next year. Something like this would be a ticket to heaven for me.

Very neat! Was expecting the annoying 'wee waw wee waw' but I know this sound is in use also.
Especially nice to see the details: both red lights flashing both once, after that, they blink in 'sequence'

where did u get the catenary?
thetrainguy125 2 years ago
Catenary on Ravensclyffe is mostly scratchbuilt but using N-Brass parts for the portals.
Tensioning apparatus uses Shawplan pulleys.
