  • Q:So, when your are singing this, you are actually mostly using your chest? And when you are singing this(no matter high or low),does your "Adam's Apple" move upward?

    Thanks.

  • where are you from? i like your accent

  • Great Video. I just can get the infant crying sound out of my voice and I can kinda do Bm vocals just not very loud and very sctrachy not exactly very good what do I do to get it right?

  • im practising growling abt 2 months bt my volume is low. in low diaphragm pressure the disortion remains bt when i push to increase the volume the distortion dissapears. is it gona raise with practise nd how shld i practise as a beginner.

  • The angry sigh approach , I feel like it's just phlegm, is that right?

  • Hey awesome videos man! One quick question though, can Opeth-style vocals be achieved using the crying-baby technique?

  • thank you lol now my vocal cords don't hurt nearly as bad, it really hurts when you try to do maniac's vocals from mayhem....

  • Your metal attitude is very prominent. It had me laughing through most of the video. Great job by the way! I've never really been able to explain it to someone when they ask me. And for those who wish they had a place to practice... go to gas station, get something to drink, and practice on the way to work. ;)

  • Best vocal video I've seen so far :)

  • It still hurts :(

  • Sorry, screwed the first one up. That was for @Bludhoundz8

  • @Blidhoundz8 Richard uses a technique called false chord. This basically means he is using his lower vocal chords (yes, people have two sets of vocal chords, you use the lower ones when you whisper) and pushes air through them in order to create his powerful sound. If you want to know more, feel free to contact me. I even have Richards email address if you need it.

  • Wow, I've been approaching not only lower vocals, but all my vocals completely wrong. I can do a sort of black metalish scream, but only by tightening the crap out of my throat and tasting blood 15 minutes in. I do tend to take things too technically but I was wondering if you had any tips or excersises for loosening your vocal cords? Whenever I try to get something right, even with my guitar at times, I'll over think it and tense up. Do I just need to try to relax or does it come with practice?

  • Thanks a ton man. been trying to find a guide for vocals for a while now and this is by far the most helpful i've seen

  • Omg! Dude thank you so much for these tutorials! I've been doing it all wrong the whole time! Very helpful!

  • i never realized i was raising the pitch the wrong way for 3 months now, WTF!!!! thank you for the tutorial!!

  • I practice in my car while I drive to work (30 to 40 minutes), that's secluded enough for me. Just remember to pay attention to the traffic as well :)

  • Trying to pitch up... Really difficult.

  • @TonyThrash94 Don't try to pitch the distortion up. That doesn't work. Just pitch your clean voice up, while keeping your voice distorted.

  • @Blixish OK, I'll try! Thanks!

  • haha screaming at home is aa big problem for me xd how can i isolate my room? xd the neighbors and my parents dont like me doing it hahaha

  • good teacher. could you please explain how to make the cry noise? i cant get it :(

  • Where can i find a power metal vocal tutorial?

  • @darthd95 Most likely at google. I would recommend getting a coach for that though, to be honest!

  • This must be one of the few videos with that big like/dislike ratio.

  • @rololoo I think I know why. ^^" Most metal vocalists like to keep their secrets to themselves, so once someone does something like this it's kinda unique.

  • @Blixish Hey!! Whats up :) Probably don't remember me, but i told you a looong time ago that i was starting to get better at screams thanks to your guides. Well, theres a certain screamer, one who i admire in every way, and i just can't seem to figure out how he does his screams? Can you help please? He's Richard Sjunneson, one of the lead vocalists for The Unguided and used to be part of Sonic Syndicate. Its like he has a high-pitched scream that still has the fullness of a mid-range scream..

  • Nice video ! It helped me a lot !

My question is : how can we practice to have more breathe, using the baby or angry man approach ? Because I can't growl or scream very long untill now ...

    Cheers From France \m/

  • @AlokAirdanoc Your question is answered in Episode 3. :)

  • @Blixish Thank you :)

By the way, do you have a video explaining how to create the type of vocals you use in "burn flesh summoning" ? :)

  • @AlokAirdanoc Yeah, this video. :p

  • Comment removed

  • Dude major props, I know how hard it is to explain. Great video man. For those who still have problems just try changing the amount of airflow and relax your vocal chords, you'll get it, it just takes a little practice.

  • i find that the best way to explain using your diaphragm is to tighten your stomach like when some one punches you in the abs. your abs tighten up to absorb the blow. its the same thing when you growl. you tighten your abs to get a steady sound.

  • @throwfor6 Most people tend to close their throat when they think like that, so they feel bad/lightheaded, and as an added bonus they get tired quickly.

  • @Blixish i find the trick is to tighten your abs not your throat. it helps if you think of it from an opera perspective the same way they tighten their abs. i used to get light headed when i started but now i can grow for hours and be fine.

  • @throwfor6 Then you're doing it correctly! From a pedagogical perspective though, I think there are better ways to teach correct diaphragm use. ^^,

  • @Blixish ya the thing is some people learn things in different ways and different types of explanations work for different people. i really like your vids though. i think its awesome that your that willing to help people learn.

  • When you do the infant crying noise and lower it down to a growl, are you also blocking off your nose (kind of like when you have a cold and you can only breathe through your mouth)?

  • @TheJaminChiken Depends. Just like with singing: You can have it with a nasal sound, or with a strictly focused non-nasal sound. So technique-wise, it is irrelevant.

  • Hi, i was wondering how i can prolong the durations of my growl. my technique uses a lot of air (not sure if this i'm doing it right, but it gets the job done), but im amazed how people can just drag it for so long..

  • @zh4ojie This technique utilizes the clean voice, and just distorts it. The more clean voice you have behind your growl, the longer you can hold it. (Don't worry about the sound/tone, your clean voice disappears in a mix, behind the guitars and the natural vocal distortion/"growling" sound.)

  • Awesome vid!!! It makes me feel I can do it too hoho I'll get some practice >:)

  • No matter what I always seem to get a tickle in my throat which leads to pain, even with the basic techniques

  • Thanks a lot for this vid. It's the first one I did actually understand.

  • everytime i try to add distortion to my voice, it makes me gag and start coughing... Am i doing something wrong?

  • So when your doing your vocals are you actually yelling? or is it not much louder then when you speak normally and your letting the mic make it louder?

  • This video is for sure one of the best "how-to" on Youtube.

    This deserves far more views.

  • Hey, I play guitar but I want to sing and play guitar. Trouble is, I can't sing and even if I come to taking lessons (which I haven't yet) I'm too afraid to sing in front of people, is there a way I can build up confidence to sing in front of people. I've hummed while playing guitar and tried to sing fully when no one's around. Do I need to take lessons to build up confidence or is there another way I can build up confidence? Please Help!

  • @MeetyHam

Hey! I know your problem. I've been there myself.

There is no way I can teach you how to build your confidence. You just have to dive in, and go for it!

Think of it like this: What is the worst thing that can happen? You might make a fool out of yourself in front of some people.

I've made a fool of myself in front of thousands of people on YouTube. It gave me a sense of anxiety once, but it didn't have any REAL consequences.

Once you realize that it's not dangerous, you'll be fine.

  • Thanks man, helped me a lot :D greetings from chile

  • If only I could find a place to try it with power. ;_;

  • I'm starting to learn how to do highs properly, but my lows and mids need work, have a look at my videos to see what i mean

  • hey bro in the cover of hammer smashed face u used inhale or exhale vocals???

  • @SiervoDeOdin Exhale of course. I don't even know anyone who can genuinely growl with inhales. :p

  • @Blixish not to brag but i can but alex koehelr from chelsea grin was huge into powerful an distorted inhale growls and that was my "training" vocalist who i would practice vocals to

  • @iNaStYGibbs I don't believe you. Reason: Try to pronounce "respect" while inhaling. Notice how the "s" sound doesn't work?

Powerful growls are nothing without pronunciation in my opinion.

  • I've watched this video about 4 times now. AND I FINALLY GOT IT!

Thank you o' master of the heavy metal vocals!

  • great video, probably the best guide I've seen so far :)

  • Ey Blix, i can do the infant crying noise, but it doesnt sound quite as clear and smooth as when you do it, even tho i've been practicing it for about a year now, i still can't get a good high pitched scream. I can do lows perfectly fine without hurting my throat at all, but when i try to do highs, they sound really try and horrible, and my throat starts to burn really fast... any pro tips? (:

  • @jfcmjfcmjfcm Pro-tip: Episode 2 and 3 of this series! ^^ It's all about loudness, and realizing the part your voice plays in this. (:

  • Thanks for video. Not only is it technically useful, but you can tell from your screaming that you know what you're talking about.

I do have a quick query though. From what you know, does smoking and drinking affect the way you scream/growl/whatever? If it does so, is a bad or, possibly even good, for the way it works and sounds?

Once again, thanks for the vid, i look forward to practicing it in my car on my way to work.

  • Ever practice metal vocals in front of a friend who isn't exactly a fan of metal? I got a reaction that looked like ( ゚д゚) when I practiced the infant crying technique. xD

  • Hey, I know it's been months since this came out, but if I do a video response could you analyze it?

  • @DecapitatedLyon Yeah, I still answer every video. Unless the problem is dealt with in one of the episodes of this guide. :P

  • Should I feel shaky or lightheaded or weak when i practice?

  • Hey ! good job ! this video is really helpful !

But i do fry scream (exhale) and when i try to cry like the baby it dosesn't work because i've the reflexe of fry scream ... so i try to push more air and it works better but my voice go on and it hurts at the middle of my throat so i don't know what to do can you help me ? :/

  • Not once have I ever heard a crying infant make that sound....

  • GReat guide, the problem with me is that I live in a condominium and the walls are not, like, "sound-proof", lol, so I can't really do it loud or else we get complain and could get kicked out :(

  • @darkskilling If you can't do it loud, you can't do it at all. Bro-tip: Do it in work hours if you can! :)

  • @Blixish hmm good idea I could do that whe nI get home early from school.. but only one week out of two since my neighboor works during the night one week and day the next week -_- but hey that's betetr than nothing! thanks :)

  • @darkskilling You can always do it while you're driving. Every now and then you'll get that weird look from people who can hear you when you get too loud, but it's no big deal. Just smile and wave.

  • @BatteryChef I don't drive lol the only way I use to get arround is train, subway and buses and the occasionnal lift from my mom :p

  • This is definitely the best tutorial video I've ever seen!! It really helps. I can do the baby crying thing and the low growl, but I'm having problem with the high pitched scream. Every time I tried to add power to the baby scream, it just sounds like a louder baby scream....instead of a powerful raspy one. Do I need to tighten my throat a bit?

  • i was wondering if i could still do a video response? i used to be able to do two different types of vocals but like once a month they get their period and dont like to work for me :/ so maybe i could send you a video explaining how i used to do them compared to how alot of other people perform them.

  • @josdavis5309 Yeah, sure, go ahead. If you would allow me to use it in a public FAQ video, that would be awesome. :)

  • @Blixish yea definatly if it helps

  • @Blixish Thanks sooo much for the video! Love your personality and your way of explaining things. My only issue is that, whenever I try to attempt the infant crying, it doesn't exactly hurt, my throat gets all dry and itchy, and I do have to tighten up my vocal chords to do it. I wanna send you a video response, but could you reply back first so I can work on it more first? Thanks again!

  • @Bludhoundz8 Episode 3 of this series should get you out of that itchiness! ^^

  • Thank you so much! You helped me alot.

Can I ask you sth btw? Do you prefer black metal over death metal, both or the opposite?

  • @odysseasX Depends on my mood. ^^, My taste is very versatile, I can even listen to radio pop music if my mood is right. :3

  • thanks for the video))) helped aloooot!

  • Just like to say, your collaboration with CannibalisticZombie and others on Hammer Smashed Face was fucking AMAZING!

  • Shit, I can only do deep as death growls. Maybe I'm using vocal fry, is that a good or bad things? I really don't know.

  • @OriginalityNazi

Higher screams usually come a little later, the lows usually come before.

  • Thumbs up. I'm as new as it gets to this, and i have been frustrated for a while now. You deserve to know that this video is helping me.

I still dont even remotely sound to how i want to,but at least im not questioning the legitimacy of what your saying. i just know you're right.

    Thanks.

  • I might just get around to actually learning how to growl after this video! (I've definitely fallen into the "overly technical" trap). Thank you so much! :D

  • if you do the child screaming higher, don't they sound like aaskereia vocals? would like an answer. btw you're pretty good!

  • WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU FROM.

    no disrespect meant.

  • @RichardIsAlive I AM FROM FUCKING NORWAY.

    No disrespect taken! :D

  • @Blixish ahhh, Vikernes fan maybe?

  • @RichardIsAlive Like his music, but I'm not a fan of his views.

  • @Blixish lol like knifing someone through the forehead or rabid communism support?

  • Is there any vibrating I should feel? Like in my throat or something?

  • @IveGotNineLives

When your chest is vibrating that`s when you got it right, if your throat really HURTS, stop.

Do extended deep 'sigh`s' until you can growl, it depends on the person, you`ll get it eventually.

  • it should rasp te throat at the first time??? i do normal growls is the same thing or different?? Thanks man very good tutorial the best in youtube (:

  • @abuhola8 The technique is similar to rasp, if that's what you're asking. It shouldn't feel raspy, it should be comfortable. This is the normal approach to growls, yes.

    Cheers!

  • is this anythig like tuvan throat singing ???

  • @shredrix Yes, and no. The distortion is built around the same anatomical concept, but the execution is highly different.

  • I don't know if im using my diaphram or not nobody tells me properly :/

  • @Necromora Watch episode 2. You shouldn't think that way, and episode 2 will give you answers.

  • Im trying to learn Black Metal style vocals and i can't seem to get it right, even with the infomation i have gone through

  • @mario64PKmetalhead Have you seen the two other episodes in this series?

I am confident that I have gone through everything now. I don't think there is any more I can do except maybe give private lessons.

  • @Blixish No i haven't, i will check them out, thanx

  • i really loved to give you a thumbs up. :) best vocal tutorial ive ever seen, thanks a lot!!

  • Thanks a lot man. Great tips. Keep it up. I'll try your way's and let you know how it goes in about a month. Thanks again!!!

  • Really good lessons, thanks for these and keep up the good job!

  • holy shit thank youuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I feel, when i try to scream, that i have a huge lump in my throat that doesnt let me push alot of air out

  • You are genious and so chilled, nice!!!

  • Excellent job! I practice my metal vocals very regularly but have never been able to really pin down one technique I like for black metal, other than the sound used by Abbath of Immortal and Atilla of early Mayhem / Keep of Kalessin (which I call droning or croaking). Beyond that, I typically struggle to come up with a sound I really like. I will try these techniques out and let you know how it goes. Cheers mate!

  • thanks man been trying to learn this stuff forever, you seem to have the best tutorial out there. two thumbs up!

  • after following your lessons i have found confidence in death metal singing... and not even kidding i taste blood in my mouth... FUCKIN BRUTAL

  • A very, very informative video! I'm glad there are vocalists out there, who are willing to make such in-depth teaching material.

I did find one small error, somewhat irrelevant though. When you talk about distorting the growls, you say the vocal cords make the distortion, which is not true. The false vocal folds (right above the 'real' vocal cords) are the source of the growl sound.

  • @Arthemesic I say that you make the sound with your voice. You use your voice to do vocals. (The word vocal does in fact mean "by voice".)

If you try to do distorted vocals without having any clean voice behind it, you'll soon notice how hard it is. ;) Maintaining air control is impossible, and getting a solid sound is hard.

  • @Blixish

You're right, it's very hard to do growls without using your vocal cords and I believe in my theory, that the false vocal cords need the real ones to vibrate with full function. I should make you a video about a certain discovery on this part, it's pretty neat though a bit tricky to master without potential hoarseness.

  • nice vid. I will try soon. I wanna do an ambient black metal solo project so I gotto learn how to scream and sing. nice work. what do u think about the fry scream? which actually is a silent technique isnt it? thank u a lot for keeping up the good work and I really appreciate this. cause u got a real life too but still ur doin this for us, even offering to response to everyone who has problems. that is really kind of u. thank you!

  • @WuschelofDespair I think the fry scream is useless personally. ^^

  • thank you very much!

with some practise i was able to improve my growls a lot! ;)

  • I'm a deathcore vocalist in a band, doing vocals for about 3 years now... I thought I knew mostly everything there was to know about metal vocals, yet I still learned from this 18 minute video :]

    EXTREMELY informative.

  • @shadowlulz Cheers!

  • When I do the agry sigh... It just sounds like I'm burping.

  • @Lookatmeiis18 Thats actually really cool... I wish I could do that xD

  • @shadowlulz Trust me it sounds terrible

  • i scream for a loooooong time at a clean high pitch, just wondering if thats any good at all when it comes to performing metal? (i'm a girl ) it sort of goes distorted towards the end anyway. But i agree with you on the whole relax thing, the way someone told me i should do metal was when i was drunk and just belting out. Kinda wondering if I should bother trying to pick a style like fry screams etc or should i just...like...scream/growl the lyrics, practising until they sound good with no pain?

  • You know.. I scream/growl for 3 years now, and after watching this video, I even learned something from you. Your videos are absolutely awesome, thanks for uploading and keep it up.

    -Ken

  • hahaha, Metal vocals guru :D

  • thnx man ive been tryin to get this and your pointers are extremely helpful. i just put up a new solo on my page and i was wondering if you could check it out and drop me a line on your completely honest opinion, thnxman

  • I am just starting this (on my second day) I started to get some pretty good sounds but started to feel very light strain on the throat. Is this normal because it is new to my vocal track or do you think I am tensing too much?

  • So... When I use the infant crying method I have trouble increasing my volume while holding the actual distorted sound. I have the same problem when I pitch down.

  • @OnlyABlemish Try the other way around. Start with a loud clean voice, then add distortion gradually. Don't start superdistorted.

  • Good vid dude, I was pretty much on the right track beforehand, seen a few other vids but its good to see I'm doing shit right, still a fair bit to go so far as improving my tone and shit but i've been recording my vocals and their starting to sound pretty brutal (going for a Glen Benton style, but my lows are probly my weak point) odly people seem to say that lows are easier than highs, but my highs are actually decent, but i'd like to get a tone like on corpse's tomb of the mutiliated \m/

  • So...Randall Blythe-style vocal vid?

  • @B10h4z4rdpwner Randy's style is so basic, it doesn't really need its own video. ^^ Just yell with the crying approach, and you'll replicate it easily.

  • Thanks a lot!

  • AMAZINGLY HELPFUL! but the new ytube design where the play button etc. is normally hidden and just appears when you move your cursor above the video screen makes it impossible to click on the link for part 2 :D ( just a small notice) you should move the link up slightly .... but the video itself is just killer!

  • @ArchetypeofGenocide Ah, cheers for the input - I'll move the button right away! ^^

  • 'Hwuuuuuh HWUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH! Easy!'

  • Thanks for taking your time to do the video!

  • @mana20 No problem! Thanks for appreciating my effort!

  • @Blixish do you know how to sing clean vocals as well? seems like you need some kind of pitch control even for harsh vocals.

  • @mana20 Yeah, I do - but it's not required to do distorted vocals. ^^

  • @Blixish have any suggestions for learning clean vocals? seems like every video I find is targeted towards people that already know how to sing. seems like singing is the one "instrument" your expected to have a teacher for.

  • @mana20 This video is not targeted towards people who already know how to sing clean. ^^ It's a step-by-step instruction video intended for beginners! :)

I don't think I'll do videos on clean vocals, I'll leave that to the professionals. ;)

  • he kinda sounded like a wookie from starwars

  • i want to know how to do thrash metal vocals could you help me?. im having trouble making it sound really agressive

  • Two attempts at the infant noise and I hurt my throat. Honestly, that just sounds so throaty, how can it NOT be your throat? I can do false chord screams and I was hoping to learn other styles because I don't really like the false chord sound... I don't get it.

  • @VegetableBasket You're not doing false cord if you're not using your vocals. Your voice. Your throat. This is singing, not some way of gurgling out some unnatural noise. The infant crying approach is not an analogy for some obscure technique, it's actually what most people do. Sing with your voice so "loose" that is becomes distorted. It's pleasant, safe and completely natural. Most babies do this instinctively. I do it purposely, and just refine the sound a bit.

  • @Blixish Perhaps I was not being clear. My vocals sound like they're put through a high pass filter, they're thin sounding. I'd like to move in a direction that would help me sound more like the vocalist of bloodbath, just as an example. I can flex a lot of different muscles and get different sounds. Making certain sounds hurt and others don't. I don't know how to get the sound I want though. Trying what you explained hurt me. Also your child crying sounds a lot more like chewbacca than a kid :)

  • @VegetableBasket The child crying thing is the way to go to be honest. If it hurt you, you're not doing it right. ^^

Try finding some video/audio clip of a baby crying, and hear if you can hear the distortion in part of it - then copy it. Once you get the sound itself down, you only have to practice to be able to tweak it into whatever you need it to be. :)

This technique is used by the former vocalist of Bloodbath, Peter Tägtgren. :)

  • @Blixish oh my fucking god, listening to a real kid helped so much, I did the noise in one second. No offense but you don't sound like a child, you should redirect everyone to /watch?v=pg4HbzuxCIE

    cheers!

  • @VegetableBasket It still hurts though : /

  • @VegetableBasket Did it hurt when you did that as a child? ;)

No, but seriously, just relax and let it flow! The more relaxed you are, the easier it becomes. :)

  • dude does smoking destroy your technique and your dream to make vocals?

and btw does water help you for the vocals ? if yes what type ( cold , hot or half cold and half hot?)

  • @koneowns I am a smoker. Smoking isn't good for you, but it doesn't make a significant difference. And for water: Drink whatever you feel like. If you drink sugary drinks, you might notice that that doesn't work for you - and you'll learn not to. Temperature does also make a slight difference, but it's not worth overthinking. Just focus on the vocals, not all the stuff around it. After a while it will become second nature to you what to drink, how to warm up etc.

  • Comment removed

  • you are ssooooo sexy man! gwaaaaaaaaaaarrrhhh! its that easy!!

  • every time I practice my high pitched screams I watch this video, so I can calm down and accept the fact that it sounds stupid...

  • Hi dude, I want to do black metal vocals, but not too high pitched, more like some KK Warslut style vocals (check out the song "I Am The Wargod", it's exactly the style I want to get (and make my own slightly different version, I don't want to be a ripoff)). I can do death growls, but I can't try going any higher because I will scare the shit out of my neighbours (most are 50 years old + so...). Is it possible to get that sound just by experimenting with different pitches?

  • @johnthegreek178 If someone already has a sound, then obviously it's possible. :P

  • @Blixish Great! Thanks :D

  • do you know how to heal your vocal? because i think mine have problem, before when i talk my voice is low but after i'm learning how to scream my voice became high, i can't talk with a low voice any more oh and i'm 16

  • @kawkwang Again: Rest.

  • i sing for a metal band and have been screaming in bands for years.. im 26 now.. and for the last 3 shows my throat has felt BLOWN.. my voice is horse and throat hurts.. its never been like this in my life.. not sure if im doing something different or what but check out my sound/band on facebook A Holy Ghost Revival

  • @johnnybAHGR In the current situation, I don't have time nor the energy. I'm sorry.

  • you are literally the best screaming teacher ever. Thank you so much.

  • carefully. naturally. GRAAAHW. :D:D

  • Nice, took me few months of practice to learn how to scream without hurting throat at all but it only took 2weeks of sickness to unlearn this, fml >.<
