I agree that top 40 is just a marketing ploy; but that doesn't mean it sucks. I agree with how you suggest that people should listen to what they want, instead.

University and college are definitely not the only answer; I myself am learning game development with the XNA framework without college.

You missed an important one; DON'T BECOME RELIGIOUS. There isn't any point in wasting your life and money on cults.
