  • Best listened to with eyes closed. Incredible.

  • This caprice is titled "When Mandolins Dream" and is featured as the intro of his instructional mando video (he was 14-16 yrs old or so..). Yes, this is SICK. A very sweet classical piece and much of it is so hyper-speed and smooth that it is almost warrants classifications as another 'classical element'.

  • indigo child ripping it up...

  • looks like its fast forwarded except you can see from the wind and the guy behind him it's not. crazy.

  • When i get discouraged, and want to give up on the mandolin, all i have to do is listen to this Man play music, and my desire is renewed. Chris Thile is not just a great mandolin master, He is an encouragement to all mandolinist.

  • Also, this in mindblowingly incredible and beautiful...as if it needed to be said.

  • Chris Thile: metronome optional.

  • soft picking and great tone is achieved through extensive practice , but .... a Dudenbostel like that helps a lot....no matter how good you are , if you haven't got a good sounding mandolin to boost it , it won't work out right....

  • Gees I wonder how sore his fingers get from playing so fast

  • @ChevyToughRebel A friend of mind who has an ensemble mate who knows Thile says he practices ... a numbing 8 hours a day. He's young though. You can do things like that when you're young and healthy. That would give me tendinitis of the fingers and hand so badly that I'd be crippled! What a wonderful piece of music this is. Never heard it before. Plop, right in the favorites.

  • His picking is so soft, he must hold the plectrum incredibly lightly. Listen ot how loud the impact on the string is compared to the note - how does he hold up unmiced with other players? Can he be heard? Great great player.

  • I would also like to thank you for posting this video. I always though this song displayed Thile's talent. I think its so sad when I talk about Chris Thile, and people don't know who he is. so many people are missing out on this man ,and his God given ability!

  • He could never be appreciated on a main stream level because main stream is so dead artistically speaking and Thile is so musical. Ricky Skaggs is very popular in the main stream, but as much as I respect Skaggs, Thile is it for me. In the mandolin world, Thile is tops. So good. The percussive sound on his pick strokes are so noticeable in this vid. It's like he's playing with a drummer, haha.

  • Too bad he isnt a household name...may be that's a good thing for us that have heard of him a truly admire the gift God has bestowed on him

  • @Calvarychurchjohnson Sam Bush still isn't a household name :)

  • Yikes! He's totally amazing!

  • This is Dude #5 pre-curlicue-ectomy, I take it?

  • Unbelievable...and to think this is 9years prior to his playing today. Truly our generations prodigy.

  • I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS ON YOUTUBE FOREVER!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!! This caprice, by the way, is called "When Mandolins Dream" It is the opening piece on his dvd "Essential Techniques for Mandolin.

  • So good...Thank you for posting this
