There is a major difference between influence and just jumping onto the coat tails of another artist, genres aren't made by copying styles, that's how genres die out, because it starts to all sound the same, dubstep is starting to die because everyone copies each other.

Genres are made by someone deciding to switch it up and other artists then working off that and creating their own unique sound within it
