  • Hi David, great video. One question: Isn't oxygen consumption decreased during sepsis due to shunting? You usually see a much higher SVO2 is sepsis ( distributive shock) as opposed to the other forms of shock where the SVO2 is low.

  • @jazzibelle69 Good observation! Oxygen consumption is actually greater in the early stage of sepsis, but does decrease when shock ensues due to decreased perfusion and shunting. A decrease in SVO2 is a good indicator of early sepsis, whereas SVO2 can increase when shock becomes symptomatic.
