  • This is the person that Glenn Beck hates.

  • Homage - 27.October 1858 THEODOR D. ROOSEVELT - born at New York City - 26th PRESIDENT of US (1901-1909, received NOBEL PEACE PRIZE 1906.

  • what program did you guys use to edit this?

  • Beautiful scenery; I owe my career to Theodore Roosevelt (my favorite president). Im a Park Ranger for the National Park Service. This was an amazing documentary, I do presentations for school kids occasionaly on the Park System, and I definetly want to show this to them. Great Job, Teddy would be proud.

  • Teddy would be considered a leftwing liberal tree-hugging environmental wacko by those who have taken over his party today. Wakeup GOP, you are headed for extinction if you don't.

  • wowz u peoplez up here in dis boat use all kinds o good grammer.

  • A wonderful documentary.2 thumbs up

  • i loveeee this video :D Theodore Roosevelt was one of the greatest Presidents of the United States...there will never be another President like him!!!

  • Can the narrator be more nasaly and monotonous, please? Facts and history aren't supposed to be appealing or interesting.

  • Shame he didn't think about Oil conservation.

  • its goes over 10 min. thats against the rules

  • I don't think that the ending credits were included in the actual project in the contest, so it would be exactly ten minutes...i think

  • i was just thinking that!

  • dude is that all u can think of when wachin this vid

  • actually they can get up to 10:59 lmao

  • i love this country with my whole heart and soul, we must protect mother earth, before its too late , thank you so much for this video, it means a lot to me

    thank you

  • great documentary, well done.

  • My brother and I won 1st in the Nationals in Junior Group Documentary. The Great Depression:Hoover's Unexpected foe. I haven't posted it yet.

  • Great Video! Can you please check out my documentary- 3rd in Washington State. and post comments giving feedback. Thanks!

  • im going to nhd this year im in senior group documentry category

  • Where did you get your video of Tedday?

  • im doing TR this year :o but on meat and drug act of 1906, conservation(like you), his Trust buster(when he took down big monopolies), and how he reformed american football. made it past regionals .

  • where'd you get the footage from?

  • im doing a documentary on les paul, its going great!!!

  • I'm doing a history documentary too i like your voice it sounded professional..

  • How many words would a 10 minute script be?

  • Our script for state was 1599 words, nationals a couple less.

  • i got 1,602 words in

  • Where did you find the footage of the logging train?

  • You don't know whether they had interviews or not, because you don't have to reference them in your documentary. I have two interviews with college profs and I don't say "according to...." in my documentary, but the judges can see it in my annotated bibliographies and I mention it in my process paper. Obviously this is one heck of a good documentary seeing as they one the whole competition.

  • We did indeed have seven interviews, 6 over the phone and one in person. We interviewed Jamie Lewis, Rich Lodes, Char Miller, Peter and Nancy Pinchot, Tweed Roosevelt, and Rob Sassor, the assistant to Jane Goodall.

Not all interviews would work well into the actual documentary, but are invaluable simply in the information that is gained.

  • How did you import video from a VHS, DVD etc. to a file on the computer?

  • man, im a fail.

  • me 2

  • actually i won first at district. ;] w000t. you don't need interviews or anything, eitherrrr. but i need video, too. :P

  • Where did you find the music?

  • sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

  • I am doing the NHD project as well. I was just wondering how much work and effort it takes to make it to a state or national competition. Also great video!

  • Wow, that is an awesome video! No wonder you won!!

I am doing mine on Frank Church, a late democratic senator from idaho, an environmentalist before it was the trend, and many more great actions (Even some not so great) that he took/what made him. I was wondering what program you used to make that, because I am using iMovie, will that do? Last year I used Pinnacle Studios and it didn't look professional at all, even though I made it to state with the topic of The Iran-Contra Affair. Thanks!!

  • hmm i used windows moivie maker if im not to late saying

  • @ 27, it looks like soarin' over california

  • this is a wonderful documentary. I am making one on Susan B. Anthony. If you made this for senior division, maybe you could answer my question. for your annotated bib. how did you cite all of your photos, video clips, and music in the bibliography? thanks...

  • wow, i would die to have mine be as good as yours. how did you get all of the video footage?

  • What program did you use to make this? I'm doing an Individual Documentary on Isaac Cline and I'm just asking around to see what program is most ideal.

  • i have the same problem

  • I'm in collage and have to do lots of documentaries. The best program I think is iMovie.

  • Or Final Cut HD, but that gets a little pricey.

I use iMovie and I made it to state last year.

There is always something unique and ideal about each program, though, so you have just got to decide which one you like best. Continue to ask around though!

  • how did you sync the narration with the video? Did you watch the video and explain each segment? I don't know trying to figure out the best way to do it.

  • Normally, you just do voice overs and should be able to move them around underneath each clip.

    What program are you using?

  • Hi, I'm doing Coco Chanel for my history day project/equled it out between men and womans fashion/ for the individual in history. Is this an OK Topic?

  • i have a question for anybdy my group needs to make an imovie for ths years history fair and me and my group really loves this video may you please help us on creating one on Elvis

  • hey do you think a good topic for this years theme (which is The Individual In History: Actions And Legacies.)would be Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and the 20th maine at gettysburg? do you think the judges would like it?

  • I'm a judge for state competitions and I think Chamberlain would be a great topic!

  • Thanks!!! I told my teacher that was going to be my topic but i was worried the judges wouldnt like it when i got to regionals. So what state do you judge in?

  • this is good, but the voice is so annoying. its so unnaturally low,

  • It's not the voice, but the content that the judges are looking for mainly, then they look for the quality (appearance, etc).

I actually think the low voice fits for this documentary, giving it a tone of seriousness.

  • I couldn't agree more!!

Too bad George Bush does not understand the meaning of conservation.

  • OUTSTANDING!

  • This is one of the best NHD documentaries that I have ever seen. Great job!

Where did you guys get the footage from the beginning? It was great.

Also, how do you "rip" a segment from a documentary (if you can't find the raw footage)?

Sorry for the pestering questions. I'm thinking about doing a documentary next year for NHD. But, anyways, great job!

  • i thought documentarys were only supposed to be 10 mins how could you win first place by going 5 seconds over

  • The timing is a bit more lenient at the state competition, where we showed this one. For nationals we cut out a few seconds but made no major modifications (since there was nothing beyond nationals, what was the motivation to do any better?)

  • haha that's what I did; I was in the junior individual documentary division and i got 10th place at nationals. my credits were extremely long.

  • referring to the comment on timing

  • how did you record the narration? did you use a professional microphone or some software?

  • I recorded the narration standing up, at 4 in the morning, after no coffee. Maybe that's why some think it sounds strange (see below comment). The mic was our history teacher's (he paid $100 to $200 I think, but the mic has since been lost, so I can't say which model). I passed the narration through a few iTunes plugins to enhance and even up the sound, as to avoid having to manually adjust the levels.

  • You won 1st place. Wow congrats but I don't know how the judges could stand the voice quite honestly. And to me the topic wasn't all that great but thats just me. I'm in Nationals this year for Conflict and Compromise so hopefully I'll be the next winner in about a month

  • Which state are you from, and what is the subject of your documentary? Are you group or individual (we were group)?

Our initial topic was going to be Nixon and China, but we opted for TR, and the judges seemed to agree. Topic seems to be the dealbreaker with NHD; if the judges don't like it, you're out, even if everything was done extremely well.

  • Me and my group are from Jersey. And you're right, so far topic has seemed to be everything. Lucky for us our's is quite interesting- The Battle of the Bulge

  • where did you get the footage?

Do u have to pay for it?

  • Teddy Roosvelt, for once upon the time the Republican Party had a heart.

  • what song/instrumentals/rythem/score is used in this song anyone know?

  • "Zulu" and "Out of Africa" by John Barry/Prague Philharmonic and portions of "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland.

  • thanks for the vid this totally is goin to get me a A+ thanks dude but watch your voice it doesnt sound natraul

  • Was the triumph the victory in conservation and the tragedy the loss of the forests?

  • ok i agree with WAKeele, they tried too hard in the voice over, yet it was well done. Hard to explain, either way is there any original shots you took? the intro was it taken by your group or are they movie clips?

  • Great video, but the narrator is trying too hard to sound like a "classic" narrator. Just sounds too amateur for me. I had to mute it to continue; it sadly bothered me that much.

  • I think you did a wonderful job. I'm planning on sharing this on Saturday in Indianapolis for a DECA conference. Their theme is Green Marketing and your work fits wonderfully. So, if you hear from some Nebraskans that it was shown, it was. Full credit is given to you as well as noting your victory at History Day. Well done and congrats.

  • Great documentary! I know that in a previous comment you mentioned that you used the Final Cut program. I was just wondering if you used Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express. Congratulations on winning 1st place, it is truly an honor.

  • great video. this year, i'm also creating an NHD documentary, however i only have pictures since my topic dates back. i have a question. how did you find your clips and in your process paper, how did you put your clip/photo resources in the annotated bibliography?

  • We found our clips mostly by poring through related extant documentaries; some clips were taken from internet sources when necessary.

To cite the clips and photos, we simply put in an entry for the documentary or book:

  • The Greatest Good. 2005. DVD. Forest Service Centennial Films.

The Greatest Good is a documentary made in honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Forest Service. ... The video was the best source we found and was sent to us by Dr. Greg Ruark, a regional director of the Forest Service. The opening shots of our documentary were extracted from The Greatest Good and the pictures from the video were instrumental in giving us a context upon which to build our video on.

  • Brands, H.W. T.R.: The Last Romantic. New York: Basic Books, 1997.

T.R.: The Last Romantic chronicled the life of Theodore Roosevelt. This was yet another perspective on the life and accomplishments of Roosevelt. We felt that in order for us to gain a true sense of who Roosevelt was we needed to go through many different viewpoints, this being one of them. This book ultimately helped us when it came to pictures. Twenty-five pictures from The Last Romantic were used in our documentary.

  • So, did you secure the rights for all of the footage you used? Or did you simply send them a courteous letter, and make sure to credit them in the video?

  • Secondly, did you have any trouble with copyright laws in making this? Did you need to get permission or use Library of Congree archives for teddy footage? Did you have a problem getting clips, did you use archived footage or take it from preexisting films/documentaries? Lots of questions but I'm considering a documentary for a NHD project and I'm curious of the challenges in creating a success project.

  • We have not had any trouble with copyright laws.

We took our source material mostly from existing documentaries. Hunting down the original footage is impractical; taking clips from existing material is tedious enough.

I believe the use of copyrighted material in our documentary is allowed under the fair use provisions of U.S. copyright law; the amount taken from any given work is miniscule, we cited the videos in our bibliography, and the purpose of the documentary is academic, not commercial.

  • From my perspective, the most difficult parts are writing the script (and all the research it takes to get there) and recording the voiceover. Laying the pictures, video, and music down in a video editor is often a night-before-the-competition process, and doesn't take much time relative to everything else.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions regarding the production of a documentary for NHD.

  • im also doing a NHD documentary, and i would like to use a clip from a documentary, and ive tried to record it from the dvd to a vhs, and my camcorder, but because of copyright laws, it wont let me. do you have any ideas. How did you take portions for your documentary.

    thanks

  • How do you rip DVD's and VHS's and get the movie clips onto your computer?

I am trying to get clips from a movie on to my computer but I don't know how

    Thank You!!!

  • You need to buy a video-tuner card. Go to Best-Buy or some place that sells electronics and check them out. Then you can directly record DVR recordings to your computer by installing a splitter on your RCA jack that runs from your wall to the back of your tuner-card installed on a PCI card slot on your PC. As for pulling clips, you can download all types of software to do that. Some are cheap (Camtasia Studio 6) around 30-40 bucks, or for higher end try out (Sony Vegas Pro 9) $500.00+. Good Luck

  • Hi, I was wondering what was the music you used at the end of the documentary. It sounded like the theme from Out Of Africa, but I couldn't believe it (it would be such a good and kind of obscure choice of score).

  • The track we used at the end is indeed titled 'Out of Africa.'

The member of our group who chose the music we used is a composer and is very knowledgeable about classical music (and presumably soundtracks).

  • Excellent. I enjoyed watching this documentary and wonder where one gets these short, yet effective clips that you used such as those in the beginning of the documentary.

  • One can get these clips from a variety of sources, including internet sources, DVDs, VHS tapes, etc.

It requires a lot of work (and a lot of fast forwarding through other videos) but it is worth collating the clips in order to have a better documentary (as opposed to just using stills).

  • how do you get the clips from DVD's and VHS tapes onto a computer?

and which movie did the clips from your intro come?

    thanks,

  • i am doing a NHD project right now

  • Wow, This really looks Like A Pro Film, Looks Great. Really Good Inspiration. Thanks

  • what program do you use?

i use windows movie maker, but my vidoes are never very clear, or what i want to show.. ect.

  • WOW this is an amazing video. What program did you guys use?

  • I just put up vid. on assassination of McKinley by Czolgasz. There is also talk about McKinley being a puppet in hands of Mark Hanna, and there is also stuff on Theodore Roosevelt.

I'll be putting up more on here, there is 8 pieces of movie I got to post. 3 uploaded.

  • We used Apple's Final Cut software, but as long as one has good scans & other high quality sources the program used doesn't make too much of a difference on a simple documentary such as this.

  • Very good video--should be required viewing for Earth Day in schools

  • Congratulations to winning the prize!

  • An extraordinary video, david! Let's try to imbed this video in the group page. I'm not good at doing this. So, I need some help.

Can we get it on the Group page?

    Louise

  • i go to dat school dat he went do dude~!

  • i go to his school

  • Wow, this is really good, very clear. I had been looking at history fair examples to see how my group was compairing to past documentaries and stumbled on this one. I have to say it's really good.

  • Excellent!

  • god bless roosevelt

  • Amazing video. Seems like some incredible research and the best video and audio quality. If you don't mind I was just wondering what that cool music at the opening is?

  • It's the theme to the movie Zulu with michael caine. It was made in the 70's i think. Good movie with good music.

  • Theodore Roosevelt has to be the most badass president in American history.

  • I am impressed! Great job! I intend to share this with schools in the Pasadena, California area. Our Museum, the Pasadena Museum of History, had several Theodore Roosevelt themed events these past few months in conjunction with the celebration of our historic mansion's 100th anniversary. The theme of Roosevelt and conservation came up at each event. Your film is an excellent summary of Roosevelt's key role in this area.

  • i really enjoyed your video, I was wondering if you could possibly load it on google video to show some of my peers at school, the high quality of your video. I would really appreciated it.

  • Thanks for the compliment.

I have been contemplating loading it onto Google Video for a while.

I'll investigate and try to load the video before the week is through.

Perhaps a higher resolution and bitrate will make the video look better than what you see here.

Remember if you change your browser's user agent string Google Video will let you download the .avi and .mp4 files directly :).

  • Beautifully done

  • really nice job!

    you had great visuals!
