  • There's a comfortable easiness about James Taylor's voice that appeals to the average person

  • It is because he sings with a passion and so much conviction in his voice rock on James.

  • dudes amazing

  • For my Tatang and Inang...my goodness...bakit kailangan..tumanda muna bago maintindihan ang mga ....

  • I love this man sooooooo much!

  • Love it.

  • *melt*

  • He has one of the most appealing voices of all time. Clear, melodious, and he sings about things most of us can relate to.

  • I'm back. Had to get my fix of this song. No one does this song better than my true love, James Taylor. He's amazing and I still love him so, even after 50 years.

  • lovely man he"s had a lot going on in his life

  • Brings a tear to your eye so smooottthhhhhhhhhhhh as nalways JT xxxx

  • Thanks again James lovely song love the way he sings this version .he is a great singer.

  • Ahh, to fall in love all over again. Please arrange it , cause I love you, Mr Taylor!

  • hell yeah, this man can sing!!!! c

  • Absolute Heaven. Nothing is better.

  • Class act, and I love the strings. Simply perfect.

  • There are no words for how I feel about James Taylor, especially when he sings this. He is amazing and I love him so.

  • The man can sing ANYTHING!

  • BRILLIANT..just BRILLIANT

  • yep swoon and double swoon, jt melts me...

  • I like listening to different performers cover songs. He makes this his own unique sound while keeping the heart of the song. Great cover!

  • I just LOVE JT's voice! My boyfriend's singing voice comes very close....so sweet!

  • I'm listening to the JT playlist and one thing I've noticed - there are NO negative comments! unlike the harsh and bitchy environment of the rest of youtube/the internet. It's SO refreshing!! Seems JT must inspire good, positive feelings in everyone... :D myself included.

  • Yes swoonnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • *swoon*

  • phil collins does an amazing live version, he does in fact 2 and one is just incredible

  • @wilkobangs ... Just went and found it. Thanks!

  • This is one of my favorite songs in the WORLD and I saw him sing it on TV. I recorded it but something happened to it. THANK YOU to you for putting this up here for me to watch all the time.

There has never been such a beautiful song sung by such a beautiful voice. Look at those eyes. Thank you a million times!!!

  • Swooning right now.....right to the heart!!

  • Fantastic I really Like James Taylor and didn't realise he was into these Amazing Jazz Ballads! Wow this is an eye opener for certain. I really like the Orchestral Arrangement, Less is more in the Music World and its sure excercised here! Has James made an Album of this style of Music does anyone know?

  • @MrDevonpianochris

    try ray lamongtane "shelter live"

  • James is Americana at it's best! Just like Apple Pie :-)

  • Like the song i feel like im still young

  • he's a bona fide MAESTRO !

  • James Taylor is a great artist and I have an absolute respect for his work.

But nobody, and I mean noboby, does this song like Sinatra.

  • He just has an amazing way to sing..I wish my husband could sing this to me..!

However, I'll do with this video and love James Taylor for the gifted artist he is.

  • I can't think of a thing I would exchange for my time with James.....He is just like his dad said, smooth as a gravey sandwhich. Keep em coming James.

    Rick

  • Checkout JT So Soft Maddd Video

  • He doesn't have the most powerful voice, he doesn't have the strongest voice, so tell me other than the obvious, why has he been one of the best singers of the last 35 years... This guy could sing the menu at a Chinese restaurant and everyone would love it.

  • @daveumpref Because his voice is unique, and sweet to listen to. If he was a judge sentencing me to life in prison....I would gladly go with a smile.

  • @daveumpref I think it is just because there is a simple honesty there: what you hear, and see, is what he is. In a world of "celebrity", shallowness and glitz, that is so refreshing.

  • simply the best

  • What wonderful and appropriate comments. I can`t stop listening to this song. It would be great to chat with people such as those who wrote in below and maybe produce a concert of the wonderful ilk of James Taylor singing so beautifully the fantastic song by the great Jerome Kearn-The Way You Look Tonight - I am producing a concert of Doo Wop on Monday Oct 18th at 7:30PM @ Bello Giardino 71 W 71st NYC for anyone interested in attending.

  • A lovely moment with America's finest singer-songwriter.

....Just the way you sing this song..... Thanks JT

  • Simply lovely —The artistic confluence of Jerome Kern, Dorothy Fields, James Taylor, John Williams & The Boston Pops is staggeringly breathless combination —All the elements in fine music have come together in this moment to underscore the musical expression of Dorothy's lyrics —Best musical arrangement of this fine classic —Anyone know what and when this performance was and, more importantly, if it's available for purchase? —Thanks, ever-so, 2old2Rock for uploading...

  • JT................. forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wonderful! what more can i say?

  • I saw JT sing this live with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra....he told a story about singing this with his dad in the audience and asked him what he thought about it; his dad said, "smooth as a gravy sandwich". I agree!!!

  • couldn't resist..going to watch La Reine Margot soon..so will leave fb alone for a bit..if it's rubbish though..could be another serial post situation..

  • I feel as if he exhudes shame when you think about the fact that he knows he's staning in front of a blue screen. Still, Sweet Baby James can still sound as sweet as he likes. Great voice.

  • swoon

  • james taylor the best

  • Lovely

  • grabe kka inLOVE mga songs ny..

  • i just love this song .............. it is soooo beautifully tender

  • Magnificent. Where are the accolades that this great man who has given so much pleasure DESERVES.

  • chills

  • Wow, just wow, Michael Buble, Rod Stewart and even the late great Frank Sinatra sang this classic tune but James Taylor took it to a higher level...

  • I have heard many singers sing this song.. NO ONE sings it like JT...Divine!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Cris,

    This song for you!

  • Truly Divine song.. sung by the best..So smooth...Goota live JT!

    Thanks for sharing...

  • James Taylor is probably the only man in the planet that I can think of that could completely overshadow an orchestra.

  • I agree with that, he has such an unusual voice...not a bad voice ,,,just very powerful...yet such a great song can be sung by just about anyone with talent...

  • @velvetunderpants44 Very well put. You're so right.

  • Far and away, the best version of this song I have ever heard, but then again, JT could sing a grocery list, and it would be a thing of beauty

  • nothing can compare to this.. goosebumps!

  • anything from JT is wonderful! Still love him....classic and wonderul! I would love to see him and Carly so something current together!

  • LUV!!!

  • Phil Collins does a pretty good version of this song, but it still doesn't compare to JT's

  • Absolutely great post. Have heard many renditions of this song but this one sits firmly atop the list.

  • I totally agree Dave

  • Love the jacket. Vintage Comme De Garcon. I used to have the same one.

  • I love JT's music and his voice. I just wish he wouldn't have messed up on the words at 1:54 and 2:50. Maybe he meant to sing the word "glow" instead of "charm."

I think charm fits better. I don't know if he was aware of this. I don't know if anybody else caught that. I shouldn't complain, though. James Taylor is one of my favorite musicians.

  • OLd school the v best song ever written - what a fabulous version 10/10.

  • Song we used for the father-daughter dance at my daughters wedding. My daughter suggested it and I always new I wanted it, but she pulled it off of the net and asked me if it was a good one! What are the odds a 20 year old girl could do this? Talk about being on the same wavelength. Love you Alison, Dad

  • Fantastic song.

    thank yuo Olivia.*****

  • Incredible arrangement. Crazy

  • Jerome Kern wrote this beautiful song........

  • Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields

  • That's right - Jerome Kern wrote the music and

Dorothy Fields wrote the words -

It is beautiful......They were a great team.....

  • Who's the writer of this wonderful song?

  • Dear James - Will you please come to The Sage, Gateshead, England?

  • I've followed JT throughout the late 60's to today and I can tell he has trained that voice of his, He is now an all round performer. Saw him in Manchester UK last Tuesday, he was great.

  • cannot agree w/u more than this ... it's exactly what I think of his voice, nice rounded, mature in a word !

  • when i want to in the mood I will play this song-with candel lights and no one will say no-LOL

    great song and singer!!!!!!!!

  • What a sweet man.

  • A lovely video of James singing a favourite song of mine - He is great -

    Thank you!

  • I love James Taylor's sweet & gentle voice. And how groovy to see he loves songs from the Great American Songbook. This is one of my all-time favorite songs & he gives a beautiful rendition here. Awesome to the max, daddy-o (as the hipsters say). Thanks a bunch for posting this great clip!

  • Kind of bland, emotionally, like a Johnny Mathis effort, or a Rod Stewart cover, or me, in the shower. We all like to "do" these classics.

  • great stuff. !!

  • This is one of my favorite songs and James sings it so beautifully.

    LOVE IT.

  • I love him. nuff said

  • Sigh...

What a voice. He sounds like a singing Clarinet.

Beautiful song too... There is a really interesting story about this wonderful Kern song called "I've Told Every Little Star."

Search "archives/2004/08/ive_told_every.php" if your in the mood to have your heart broken wonderfully.

  • Tried the link, but not found. Are you sure it is correct?

  • bbtablet :

Try it again and remove the spaces that YT adds.

  • Thanks leesagirl, but I still can't seem to do it right - can you paste it here for me as it should be? Many thanks.

  • bbtablet:

YT adds spaces so you can't really put an actual url in these posts.

Take the search url I pasted above and paste it in google... take out the space between the "e" and the "r" and search... the top link in google is the one.

  • I will see you James Taylor on May 8th. I will be with you at the Fox Theater in St Louis 2nd row singing with you to the top of my lungs....with my son, who is now grown but listened as I sang him to sleep everynight as a child....all JT songs...and now I sing them to his Daughter 'WE LOVE YOU'!!!!!!!! I have a youtube up of me singing this to my Madyson Brooke! See you ....I will be there ....2nd row!!!

  • The man makes me swoon.

    Thank you for posting this.

  • wow!!! got COVERS the very day it was released. how i wished this song was there. very moving performance...the audience is in the palm of his hand. i'm a very big fan and i really can't believe how beautifully he sang this song...

    JAMES TAYLOR ...singer...songwriter...story-teller

    there is none better...

    God bless you, JT!

  • donpic1943. don't worry. I flagged it too.

    Jerome kern.

  • Every couple of months I come back and listen to this man sing this beautiful song. He does it with respect for both the lyrics and the melody. Take a listen to Fred Astaire's version..........also a thing of beauty.

  • @donpic1943 It bothers me that my generation "born '61" don't appreciate these wonderful songs. Great music is great music! One of my fave bands is the Clash but I can still appreciate the beautiful music of the past past! I guess I dating myself but who else will.

  • His voice is like a fine wine...it just keeps getting better with age!

  • And hsi ex wife Carly Simon !!

  • look for his son Ben

  • lovely

  • the man can sing!!!

  • JT is one of the best -Thank you JT for the song

  • icecreamforcrowhurst

    Silence.

    I guess I win.

  • And I defy all of you not to be moved.

I don't care about your classifications, James sings this easily up to stage standard.

I love this because it is so not him.

  • icecreamforcrowhurst

    Call me a jazz snob.

    Absolutely a jazz snob.

This is not jazz. It's a jerome kern standard. IE a Musical Theater song.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Give me One Man Dog or Mud Slide Slim over this any day of the week.

  • I love JT but you'll have to excuse me when I say that JT singing jazz standards is definately something I can do without in my life.

Call me a jazz snob but his timing, interpretation and feel for this music leaves a lot to be desired.

It's not as bad as Rod Stewart's murderous multi-pronged assault/cash grab on the American songbook but that's not saying much.

  • I wonder if he's thinking of his ex Carly Simon ?

  • Every time I listen to this version I get a tear in my eye. The man puts his heart and soul into this song.

  • he just does something to the deepest part of my heart when he sings any song. There's joy, sadness, hope, laughter, romance, all rolled up into one big SIGH!!!

  • i'VE NEVER HAERD HIM SING THIS SONG...AGAIN HE CAN SING ANY SONG AND MAKE IT SO, SO SPECIAL & LOVELY!!! IS THIS ON ANY CD???

  • I would travel 1000 miles to see JT

  • nice

  • Does anyone know if the DVD from this performance is available for sale?

  • This is a very genuine version, good for a proposal.

  • I wonder if John Williams did the orchestral arrangement. Of course, James sang great, but the arrangement ... That's the way it's supposed to be.

  • great writing + superb orchestra + sensitive talented singer = total emotional joy

  • WOW James is the man!

  • Heavenly. I saw JT perform this and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with the Philadelphia Orchestra so many years ago and have craved to hear it again. Thank you so much for posting!

  • Frank who?

  • Frank Sinatra

  • What a combo James Taylor and The Boston Pops... grew up in Concord Mass and a BIG BIG JT fan!!!!

  • I would love to be able to purchase this song on CD. Can anyone tell me if it's available on CD?

  • oh god! That was beautiful! I never heard this song before but James Taylor really did an awesome job performing it!!

  • wow i just love james taylor.. i got all his greatest hits compiled... and now this song is so breath taking.. love you jt..

  • Ack! he's the best! Thanks for posting this!

  • Who would have thought almost 40 years ago that James Taylor would sing this song so many years later?! Irresistible.
