  • Cool video. Thanks...

  • Enjoy your shitty canadian flash cartoons, faggots.

  • fucking terrible

  • Guys, I am Yozhik too. Why no one does not look at me?

  • I remember myself watching this when I was a kid

  • Hedgehogs are lovely, as this tale "from long ago" is, now something renewed - for another than only for kids. Nice video!

  • Psih! <3 hehe

  • 6 people must be lost in the fog.

  • @je25ff

Your whole life is a piece of shit fucking redneck

  • Hahah bear is soo cute

  • Kogda ja malenkij bil eto bil odin is strashnih miltikov dlia menia. Muzika ochen strashit, ja dumaju nado bilo im poveselee muziku sdelat'!

  • SCARED STRAIGHT!

  • Book “Hedgehog in the Fog” in English and Russian is available at Norstein Collection at Amazon

  • u guys might like this then its about a dog and a wolf, also a soviet animation

    watch?v=Vwm8ptd4XtE

  • ARCYDZIEŁO!

  • this is adorable! lol the hedgehog is a little bit looney lol but he's so sweet :)

  • I love the texture of the hedgehog, the owl, the dog's ears... everything! It is a sweet, funny, beautiful cartoon! The animation was way ahead of it's time for something made in 1975! Oh and the hedgehog's voice is so cute... it reminds my of my nephew's when he was little. :-)

  • GO to my page 2 see my Hedgehog

  • What a nice, simple little tale... there should be more films/cartoons like this.

  • @iciclecrazy Don't feed the troll please.

  • @BurgerKingRules "american" language?HAHAHAHAHA!

  • OMG! I used to watch this when I was little:)

It was actually really scary..:P But it was one of my fav.:D

    LOL!

  • Frightening more than scariest horrors for me. Anyway, I love it. River part was so scary...

  • Still frightening as Hell.

Especially that part, when the Hedgehog floats in the river.

  • There is a famous Russian joke about the hedgehog. Here it is. One day, hedgehog learned to breathe with his behind. He set down on a tree stump, and suffocated. It's funny if it's told in Russian though.

  • I can not believe everyone is comparing this to 'American cartoons'! !?

This is an art animation piece...not a cartoon. It also should show how minimalism can be more effective than loudness in sight and sound. If you watch this, it draws you in to being there and seeing not only the sights the Hedgehog finds, but also feel the fog, the water and the moisture of the evening.

Most well done, as much of Russian artistry usually always presents.

  • @treehugginguy It's compared to American Cartoons as this was the animation broadcasted on TV for kids...

  • Sadly, I had never heard of Yuri until today. As seems to be unanimous in comments here, I find this so beautiful and so innocent. And indeed, it describes something so irresistible and invisible, so ephemerally human and so concretely angelic. It makes the heart ache for purity and simplicity. Capturing these qualities on stage or screen is nothing short of a miracle. A marvelous example of Joseph Campbell's 'Hero of a Thousand Faces.' Thank you Yuri, for we can now count the 1001st face.

  • Wonderful isn't it, no the translation is pretty good, but obviously it's hard to translate anything from poetic Russian x

  • This looks so much better than those american cartoons =D

  • Lovely animation. I believe it was drawn by hand with pencils, though I am not quite sure. Still, it is rare to see something so unique and dynamic, even by today's standards.

The cartoon has a haunting feel to it, but a bit more subtle than the one its literary blueprint takes on. This is definitely a classic in animation.

  • Masterpiece!

  • I love this, so much better than american cartoons. . . more human if u know what i mean...

  • @Ilijasrbin97 i actually dont

  • A classic. The funniest part is when the hedgehog calls the owl a psycho/ weirdo at 4:05... I was laughing out loud when I saw this again after many years.

  • i wish i could understand russian!! mr friends from st:p tells me i need to know!

  • I always loved russian animation, it's so cute and kind :)

  • @MacLtu

It's soviet animation. And you are right, Soviet animation is the best.

    This is a materpiece.

  • don't mention it, said that someone.

    Beautiful.

  • beautiful

  • Interesting translation. I think a lot is lost on the snail and leaf.

  • what?

  • It is a masterpiece! It is a sort of a real art. Explanatory that not everyone can understant it.

  • Cool story bro

  • lovely! One of my childhood favourites!

  • It is not based on a Russian FOLK tale you stupid! It's based on a children book by Sergei Kozlov, the screenplay writer of the animation; the book is different though, much more meditative and philosophical (even the theme of death is discussed in the second part). Of course, like in the case with the Nutcracker (Tchaikovsky - Hoffmann), the book is much less known and probably has never been translated to English.

  • Well if it's an obscure Russian kid's book then he's not -that- stupid for not having heard of it, is he?

  • Absolutely, sorry if I had offended the creator of the subtitles. :( I only feel sad about the fact Kozlov is so little known while his books are astounding. The same paradox as with the Nutcracker.

  • What a masterpiece! Simple but poweful.

  • Beautiful.

  • Дурак....

  • The russians love their hedgehogs.

  • plz plz plz plz plz plz make me a character i ur so good at making them

  • classic:

    simple and true

  • The animation is so wonderful. I've never seen cut out animation that well done before. It's amazing.

  • 3:53 :)))))))))))) <3

  • smileygills!

  • Alright!

Thanks for bringing back a chidlhood memory.

I remember being scared to my teeth by this cartoon when I was about 4 years old. But It also brought out a curiosity for the big wild world out there.

    Epic. ;)

  • I was scared, too.

And I thought I am the only one^^"

The owl was just freaking scary xD

  • The paints in the USSR were not only colourful... but also highly-toxic)

  • the owl is really greatly animated

  • i luv it! ur the best! thank you! this si awsome!!!

  • So what does the white horse symbolize?

    And the creepy Someone?

And why does the White Horse leave such an impression, more than all the other creatures. Is it the opposite of the Someone?

One is distant, white, and swallowed up in whiteness(fog), but with a nearness. The other is helpful, dark, swallowed up in the dark water, is there, but with a hair-raisingness.

    Whats going on?

  • You tell me :-)

Everyone's free to interpret this fairy tale in their own way. There is no one "right" interpretation, my good man!

  • How is she, there...in the fog?

  • Best. Last. Line. Ever!

  • Silent Hill

  • Beautiful and eerie!

  • Amerikosi oni ne figa ne ponimaiut chto tokoe realnia zhizn v tumane!!! LOL

  • that shit was bangin'

  • cute!

  • Spasibo za detstvo........

  • Yes its truly amazing. Thank you

  • Wow - such a delicate tale told with such light brush-strokes, and the animation is stunning. I'm completely sold on it.

  • aight i sense some real ish here.

  • So,

    I'm american

and I admit, I dont understand it

can someone explain the meaning? pleasee

  • *Spoiler alert!*

Well, it's a hedgehog. He's lost and it's foggy. He just barely survives the treacherous journey.

The moral of the story is, of course, that you should never, ever bring jam to friends who live far away. Because if you do, you will probably die. At the very least, you will be horribly traumatized by owls and snails.

Also, if you get lost and things seem dire you should simply abandon hope and pray that death comes quickly. Do not bumble around in the fog!

    The end.

  • hehe you are mean. ;)

  • Or, it could mean that people shouldn´t be afraid of sometimes breaking the rutine.

Get some new experience and you might just end upp with new freinds! (like the Dog and the Fish)

well that´s how i see it anyways.

  • @r0flcopter No one knows for sure, but some people try to point out the owl as a fear in a person, the horse as the great secret we are obsessed with, that's why we break the rules, go through danger. There's also a dark Someone, I've got no idea on him. Maybe a rough helping hand , something you never know

This whole idea is really filled with russian spirit... we always scare to be alone out there, and we're fine when people are close. Indifferent to strangers, but sometimes very responsive

  • Wow! I am simply at a loss for words.

  • stolko let spystya i on mne dosihpor nravitsya.

  • I can't believe they used to show us such 'existential' cartoons when we were kids.

  • wahahaha samyi spokoinyi ejik na svete :D

klassno kogda on ptichek peredraznival :D:D

i esche kogda on sovu psihom nazval :D

  • beautiful... simply beautiful

  • Etat multik legenda! Mõ v detstve etat multik ljubili i bajalis:) Ah, za 15 let evo s nova uvidet!? Spasib tebe!

  • Excellent! Contemplative, poetic and beautiful in it's pure simple nature.

  • It's funny, when I was a kid I hated this cartoon, but now I just adore it.

  • This vid is like so cute...

  • My favorite cartoon of all time!

  • russian zen

  • This made me so sad and happy at the same time.

  • im in love with this film

  • I heard about this film about 8 years ago and finally managed to borrow it from a library about 5 years ago. If I were stuck on a desert island and only allowed two movies to watch, one of them would be this one.

  • On second thoughts, if I were only allowed one movie it would be this one.

  • what would the second be? i'm interested :P

  • I actually can't remember for certain what was on my mind at that point, but chances are it was Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. I watched it many times during a particularly bad depression. While there are a number of films that have had a powerful effect on me, there are very few that I could watch over and over again. There is nothing like a childrens film or TV programme with real heart.

  • Then again, if I had Hedgehog in the Fog, my need for another children's animation wouldn't be so intense. In that case I would either choose In Absentia by Karlheinz Stockhausen and the Brothers Quay, or Kraftwerk's Minimum Maximum, which I also watch fairly regularly (my favourite segment is Dentaku performed in Tokyo).

  • I fully agree! this is animation thats perfectly suitable for all ages and that doesnt have an expire-date, your comment below makes me longing for a mellow short cildrens animation-film by Kraftwerk with early analouge-Kraftwerk-music made in Professor Balthazar-style!

  • That Professor Balthazar is good, isn't it! I'd never heard of it before you told me.

It won't by any means be everything you want, but you might get on well with Norman MacLaren's stuff. He used to scratch audio tracks by hand onto the celluloid.

  • Oh, how I hated this cartoon in my childhood..

  • What a masterpiece! It brought a tear to my eye.

    :´)

  • Dear lostars, I had the same impression ! -

after watching it, I don't think I could ever forget this... It's so beautiful, haunting, dreamlike, mesmerizing.

It captured perfectly the curiosity, fright, wonder, amazement of fairy tales and fantasy. It's like watching a dream!

The tree scene at 4:50 and stars scene at 8:04 are especially breathtaking. In the age of CGI these days, works such as this needs to be treasured forever.

    Spaseeba!! "

  • In some parts of the world even children know

that there is a difference between a culture

    and a pop-culture,

a difference between the art and the culture

and a gap between the ART and pop-culture.

    the only wonder,

which comes out of the pop-culture -

it could teach the ameba to write.

  • What level do you exactly mean?

    Making $800000000?

Being the highest grossing film of 1994 worldwide?

Second highest in the USA after FORREST GUMP?

Thank god it doesn't compare. Not everything is made for the money, you know.

And yes - sorry - you are not getting it.

  • No, not from the point of how much profits it made. From the point of the story, the characters and how they develop, the music, the impact it has on you, the lessons it teaches you, etc.

  • you dont

  • How can you say that? You better be an American because than you'd just be ignorant and that's already expected of you.

  • after watching it, I don't think I could ever forget this... It's so beautiful, haunting, dreamlike, mesmerizing. • Delightful and wonderful....this animation is a treasure.

To the ones supposing what kind of software can duplicate this, I'm sorry to tell you--none can. It takes talent, people. And it was done by hand, using cutouts. There are no shortcuts to something like this.

    A beautiful piece of film.

  • norstein eto vsetaki geniy...i really dont know any other works that are so kind and magical, and so realistic and malancholy at the same time...this is amazing...and, yeah, no computer can make this-animation should b made by hand...

  • amazing, i love the fantasy world. it's amazing the soviets were able to pull this off.

  • "the soviets"? :p

    [rant]

    1. This film was the labor of a creative individual (and those who helped him) whose country is no more responsible for his work than any other artist's is.

    2. Even if you generalize, why would you be amazed? Much of the 20th century's greatest art has come from there (especially music). Evidently you hold all of soviet Russia to your generalized assumptions.

  • You have the right notion in crediting Norstein, but you are, in fact, wrong. Soviet Union had an incredibly open minded attitude when it came to animation and harbored and produced real masterpieces. It wasn't all censorship and bigotry, you know?

  • what kind of computer software can duplicate this effect?

  • After Effect maybe....but really...

  • thanks a lot! my ever favourite animation movie!

now it is simple to share it with my international friends. Good resolution and brightness.

  • Wow, I now see where Bjork's "Human Behaviour" music video was influenced from. Awesome!

  • brought back some really old memories.

thank you very much for posting this

  • i love how he suddenly remembers his little bag and runs frantically around the tree looking for it. and the mysterious Someone in the river... amazing video

  • I love how he picked up the leaf and quickly put it down and backed away xD

    So cute!

  • Oh dear god, this is high quality.

  • Amazing o_o
