I have studied this kind of stuff for years and the sad fact is that in our society, in our American patriarchal society, the media (and many others) tends to blame the victim and make up excuses for the perpetrator. What makes it even worse is this is one of the major reasons so many rape cases go unreported. 1 in every 3 women is sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Most of them go unreported and even fewer end in punishment for the criminal.

Well, actually, the "justice" system is supposed to convict based primarily upon solid evidence, not just what someone says happened. Despite what Mr. Soap Box says there, the primary reason most of the charges were dropped and this case didn't go to trial is because there was no evidence supporting the girls claims that she was drugged or raped anally. In order to convict on all those extremely serious charges, they would have had to convict based upon her testimony and nothing else.
I should have been clearer- the jury/judge's decision is obviously supposed to be the most reasonable interpretation of the evidence presented. I find it off that you decry Jay for making assumptions about the real reasons the charges were amended (the charges, not the story) but you think you know it's because they had less of a chance of being proven?

I have studied this kind of stuff for years and the sad fact is that in our society, in our American patriarchal society, the media (and many others) tends to blame the victim and make up excuses for the perpetrator. What makes it even worse is this is one of the major reasons so many rape cases go unreported. 1 in every 3 women is sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Most of them go unreported and even fewer end in punishment for the criminal.

No, I think you need to think about what you're saying. Are you saying 13 year old girls don't lie? ALL humans of ALL ages lie. Yes, you might not want to believe or accept that, but there are many innocent men rotting in prison or registered as "sex offenders" for the rest of their lives because of these lies. he's absolutely not saying that he believes this girl. He's saying that since Polanski acknowledged that "something" happened, and that he's not being a responsible adult by allowing this thing to drag on for 30+ years. At the very least he should pay her what he's already promised. Thats what the issue is, not the truth of her claim, but Polanski's continual attempts to weasel his way outta a pretty serious accusation. which should raise one BIG red flag...Nice try though.

You know who's supposed to decide if someone is telling the truth? The justice system. Is it flawed? Hell yeah, but imo it's better than the alternative of never convicting anyone because there's a chance they might be innocent (a chance that a jury or judge has decided is significantly smaller than the accused being guilty).

Well, actually, the "justice" system is supposed to convict based primarily upon solid evidence, not just what someone says happened. Despite what Mr. Soap Box says there, the primary reason most of the charges were dropped and this case didn't go to trial is because there was no evidence supporting the girls claims that she was drugged or raped anally. In order to convict on all those extremely serious charges, they would have had to convict based upon her testimony and nothing else.

I should have been clearer- the jury/judge's decision is obviously supposed to be the most reasonable interpretation of the evidence presented. I find it off that you decry Jay for making assumptions about the real reasons the charges were amended (the charges, not the story) but you think you know it's because they had less of a chance of being proven?

I was a kid when the events took place, so maybe I'm forgetting some important developments. Was Polanski ever proved guilty? If not, then our system of justice wisely presumes he's innocent. The fair trial must happen before he can be found guilty and punished.

Though I am a fan and huge supporter of the work and style of Roman Polanski, and try to sympathize with him because I am a director, I cannot agree that he should escape the atrocities of his past which include raping that young girl. He has been given ample opportunities to resolve the matter and he has not made any attempt to do so. Though his wife was killed by Charlie Manson's family, sympathy doesn't carry over into his own crimes. He deserves what he will receive as punishment.

I'm a newcomer to the Polanski case (I only found out about it last night), but I admire the fact that the accuser is willing to move on. But at the same time, I'm disgusted that Polanski hasn't paid at all for his crime, and it makes me feel like the combination of our justice system and our government is willing to shrug and let this sort of thing drop.
And the fact that movie producers are supporting this scum of a human being...hell, ANYONE supporting him...Jesus.

The best ways this could have been solved would be ostracizing Polanski or restitution to the victim. Or a combination of the two because sitting in a cage with other criminals doesn't do a damn thing but make more dangerous criminals.

I was not familiar with the details of the case until recently (I knew about the plea but not the charges). He needs to serve some more time in jail, I'm sorry.
