1) River eventually knows the Doctor's name because she uses it to get him to trust her 2) The Doctor didn't tell River his name when they got married. Young River doesnt know it.

I don't know about the cradle. Maybe she CAN read it - that would be cool. I reckon she still doesn't know coz there will be a pretty significant moment when he tells someone his real name. The show IS called Doctor WHO

And he (the eleventh doctor, that is) whispers "look into my eyes" then, so that she can see him in his pupil and then realise that the doctor will be okay. In 'A good man goes to war' the doctor's cradle, Amy can't read it. That's because it's in Gallifreyan, so it is unreadable or something. However, being part time lord, River CAN read the name on the cradle. Being the doctor's cradle, it reads the doctors name. That's how she knows what it is.

She does know his name, in the Library episode he says that she knows his name and asks how. At the end of series 6 the 11th Doctor didn't whisper it to her, that is true, but he is not dead, so will tell her in the future.

Well, there is no proof that he TELLS her his name, but there is proof that she knows his name. She may read it on the Doctors cradle, or he may tell her. We don't know that yet, but we DO know that she knows his name, and she tells him his name.

After seeing all the episodes with the 11th Doctor and River then re watching the 10th Doctor and River it makes me so sad. They never could really be together. and what's worse poor Amy and Rory never got to watch their little girl grow up... In the end River had a tragic life. She never got to really be with the man she loved and technically married, and she just never got to have a normal life.

@midnightfairy89 well her consiousness is saved, that's the hard part to save. she just needs a body and a way to transfer to that body. So if The Doctor could create a blank ganger, and modify the psychograft from season 2 ("new earth") to accept digital input, you have river song in a new body.

Although destroying the concept of death on the show may not be the best writing decision.

Okay, to address one comment below: Jenny may have chosen to remain looking the same, as it was established in the old series that Time Ladies can choose their next form. On to my main reason for commenting: the Doctor and River's relationship has transfixed me since it's "beginning" in the Library. Watching it progress through the Smith era so far has been bliss for me, not in spite of but largely because of all the tragic parts. And this video brings D's 10 & 11 together nicely through it.

The pain of her watching the Doctor come to know who she is, and the Doctor's (and our's) of knowing what she is going to do, really comes through in the music.
