This song very nicely captures the bright and slightly off-center tempo of the 1960's for me. I don't think there will ever be another period like it again. Thank you Burt! Thank you pablotabloz!
@SMSHCT55 Really? I also saw it in '69 and that's not my recollection at all. I don't remember ANYone bringing the house down like Jill O'Hara did. I wish the spotlight hadn't eluded her.
This show is what made Jerry Orbach a star. I wonder how many law/order fans know where his beginning was? Very versatile and talented actor who could actually sing a song!

You can tell, without a shadow of a doubt, that Stephen Sondheim was VERY INFLUENCED by this Burt Bacharach score when he did his Company score. Stephen had some issues lol. Although his lyrics were probably the best, 2nd to Bob Dylan, he couldn't write a great melody to save his life. And everyone else SUCKED in musicals, in his time period, which boosted his, already too high ego, even more. Watch his interviews. He's a complete douchbag.
Wonderful song. Last words of the song as I recall were sung by Jerry Ohrbach after Jill O'Hara had just left the stage. I used to think when I was young that the character played by Jill O'Hara wasn't really interested yet at this point in the character played by Jerry Orbach. But now, hearing it again, it sounds like she's making some hints.
@AKAFT Fran isn't thinking about CC Baxter at that point; she's in love with someone else. And yes, she has walked off the stage when the last line is sung and he's singing to no one. Just saw the revival. Wow, is it bad. Sorry if I've offended anyone, but just look at Turkey Lurkey Time from the 1968 Tony Awards. You'll be so disappointed when you see the show now.
Okay, to solve the dispute: Jill O'Hara is the one singing on this recording, with Jerry Orbach. Betty Buckley was paired with Tony Roberts in the London Production, which was recorded but is nearly impossible to find. Jill Haworth was in the original cast of Cabaret, not Jill O'Hara.

It's Bette Buckley "Actress/singer Betty Buckley has starred in numerous theatrical productions ... where she starred in Neil Simon's Promises, Promises"
Jerry Orbach was one of the true show biz legends. He could do it all, sing, dance, act and do it on stage, films and television. Not too many around like that anymore. Thanks for posting.
This IS Jill O'Hara -- who was also in the Broadway version of "Cabaret" as the original Sally Bowles, when the character was (oddly) depicted as 180 degrees opposite of Liza. Divine decadence?
I love Jill's voice though. Her version of "Knowing When To Leave" is gorgeous.
@Halatombus - Don't forget, Jill O'Hara also originated the role of Sheila in the original Off Broadway production of "Hair." Check out her version of "Good Morning Starshine" on the deluxe CD. The girl had pipes. And only 21 when she did all three shows. Then she virtually vanished for 25 years.
Hmmm I thought I left a comment on here. Oh well... I just wanted to say, Jerry Orbach was HOT back in the day. I mean yeah he obviously has a gorgeous voice, but I had to mention his hotness. Jill O'Hara has the most awesome sound. I think I've listened to this song about ohhh a hundred times in the last couple of days.
i love listening to old recordings. its like listening to the past. promises promises in particular cause it kinda sounds like the popular music of the day back then.
I remember seeing this in 1969 & being blown away by it. And thinking her voice sounded like Brenda Lee.

@PecanSandees23 I understand. Listening to this recording however leads me to think she is beginning to think about Baxter.

I saw this on Broadway when I was a kid with camp. I had no idea who was in it. Who knew that he would grow up to be Jerry Orbach?
