I wish I could place this sit-com at the top of my list on my homepage, simply because the personality and character of Alex Keaton shaped an entire TV watching generational decade, in a manner never seen before nor since.
There was a reason Michael J Fox won three Emmy's in a row and was so loved and an icon in the eighties, and this clip shows it.
However, on technical merits and on the strength of comedy writing and of the overall ensemble, the other four sitcoms place ahead in my list.
All nonsense. Alex was fiscally conservative, a true product of the eighties, Friedman, and Reaganomics.
BUT, in ethical matters his integrity was unimpeachable.
He gave up Princeton for his sister Mallory. He contemptuously turned his back on his fraternity for the sake of his friend Skippy. He viewed Jennifer (who took after her liberal parents) as an intellectual equal. And finally, all the women he was attracted to were strong feminists.
He did right thing in EVERY moral/ethical dilemma.
Who wants to be a Republican? You also have to hate gays, hate non-white people, hate immigrants, hate illegal aliens, hate non-Christians, hate anyone who hates Fox "News", hate atheists, hate Hollywood, hate artists/actors/filmmakers/writers/musicians, and hate anyone who believes in the separation of church and state, the right to form labor unions, and yes, once more good measure, hate gays. Republicans aren't Republicans, they are Taliban light and war loving neocons, nothing more.
I am a die-hard liberal, I'd rather chop off my own hand that vote republican or tea party or any other sect but if Alex P Keaton were running for president I might just vote for him.
@2112murphy The makers of the show wanted him to be annoying and a mockery of the Republicans but they didn't count on J Fox's endearing charm ... so it backfired on them actually.
@lonewulf44 Yeah, Michael J. Fox said in interviews that young Republicans and conservatives came up to him and said he was their boy. Alex P. Keaton was not a racist though (and I'm guess not a homophobe or a Christian theocrat) so my guess is he would not fit in with today's Republiklan party.
@Satchel334 Not sure I can trust someone who obviously doesn't have anything but some kind of spoon fed agenda based ideological biased so imprinted on their brain they can't think for themselves and can only spew random generalized statements.
@Satchel334 The character Alex P. Keaton was more like Ronald Reagan, neither ever came across as racist or homophobic, but probably very indifferent to the plight and struggles of minorites. They weren't about oppressing other people or limiting the rights of others, they were more interested in money but likely didn't care to try to help the needy.
You apparently don't understand the concept of debt and spending in relation to entitlement and wasteful government programs. For 30 years now both parties have driven this country into a hole
I wonder what would have happened when Alex P Keaton had a convo with a grown up Andrew Keaton: I would bet Alex would still be a Reagan Repub and little Andrew, Generation Y Andrew, would LEAN LEFT like a lot of people his age do statistically...
Haha the little black kid who went over to the selves is probably thinking..."Its because Im black aint it?" hahaha Im not being racist thats just what I thought of when I saw that kid.
All of these shows, whether it's Family Ties or All In The Family, demonstrate how politics turns people into idiots. Both left and right are about market manipulation and redistribution of income. The Right gives all your money to the rich, the Left to the lazy. If you're just some working stiff, you're getting screwed by both parties.
I grew up in the 80's and I remember that in every class in high school, there were 2 or 3 Alex P Keaton's. The jocks wanted to beat them up, the valley girls thought they were nerds, the stoners made fun of them, and the computer geeks didn't like them because they didn't play computer games. In general, we didn't like them because they thought they were superior to us, they looked us and saw dollar signs.
I grew up in the 80's too, it was exactly like that at my high school too. The Alex P Keaton's in my school were just mean people, they didnt get along with anyone. They would always defend the rich, and degrade the poor and middle class. I thought; for someone who goes to a public school, whose parents work at the same factory as mine, who takes the same school bus as me, how hypocritical they are. Alex P Keaton represented then and now, what is truly wrong with our society.
@LisaFraggle Not then, he wasn't. Only when he became an advocate for his illness in which Democrats wish to take lives to save lives on human fetuses. Taking someone's turtles and giving them to someone else for free. Sounds like a democrat.
I love this clip because it shows how good Michael J. Fox is with kids and I am glad I am also good with kids too because you should talk to kids on their level where they understand you and always try to make them feel special no matter what background you are from and what you look like!
Very sweet, and makes me nostalgic for Alex P.Keaton's common sense, patriotism, and capitalist spirit. Nowadays, innocent pre-schoolers are taught crap like "alternative lifestyles" and "redistribution of turtle selling profits to those who want the gubment to provide their every need."
OMG!! 1:06-1:13 !!!! So hilarious!! I literally burst out laughing when he said that ROFL!!! Its weird I never even watched this show. I only watched Michael in Back To The Future and i was curious to know about his other rolls and I'm already laughing my head off!!!
Alex is know to be a "typicial racist conservative" right?? I love how he picks a black kid to be a "co-manager" without any problems whatsoever. Nice.... love it. DUH!!!
It always bothered me that Alex P Keaton was a bit sexist, even though I'm pretty sure Michael J Fox wasn't - but I don't think Alex was ever racist. He also has a black close friend named James.
Uncanny that this clip was uploaded so recently. I've been thinking a lot lately of how due to the financial crisis/disarray of the republican party, the whole Alex Keaton archetype has been rendered culturally extinct. This exact clip "Who wants to be a republican" has been running over and over in my mind. Apparently there are a few of us tapped into the same meme.

Alex's kind of Republican is gone today.
Most are focused on 'culture wars' and bashing people of different cultures...something he never did.
Today Alex would be a moderate to (gasp) a liberal.
