When my grandmother died, my niece was born that same week. Even though we were all sad about my grandmother dying, we were happy cause it was like we got a replacement. I remember hearing this song around that same time. The tortoise reminded me of my grandmother, old. And the hummingbird of the baby, new and full of possibilities. idk. That's just my interpretation.

When they talk about the farmer, it shows God taking things away in our lives, stuff we have come to love, but are in the way of His way. So he takes them, and even if we don't approve, we have to sing, because he is our God, and the ONLY God. And the stuff about the hummingbird is how he works so hard, yet he gets nothing. And the tortoise just sits there and does nothing as he doesn't want to offend anyone. Its apparent in the bridge.

Never once have I considered myself religious in an form. Cant stand the thing, it has torn my family to pieces beacuse it allows for people to interpret it in anyway they'd like then use it as a some kind of reasoning for everything they do, good or bad. The entire idea of God, and all the different religions around the world still seems to fascinate me like nothing else. This band is fucking amazing though, and if its God that inspire them to make such good music, then so be it.

Such great symbolism here! The Hummingbird strives so hard but doesn't go anywhere; the tortoise just sits and gets moved. We can strive all we want, but without God we aren't going to go anywhere. So beautiful...
