My beagle has a habit of jumping up on people but also jumping up at the table and the kitchen counter when there's food about, how could I work this method into those situations?
@ProphetGuardian - there are different kinds of clickers - some are more subtle than others if the louder one is spooking your dog. You can also use other bridges such as saying "yes". Hope that helps :)
hi i am a new dog owner, i have a 3.5 month german shepherd. I was wondering if i want to train my dog with the clicker, if there is a possibility to be addicted to it and not give me any attention when i don't have it.?
2 questions to ask u, how to i train her with out treats? (to pricy) and shes a out side dog and a blue hiller mix with red, and we have 1acer for itto run around (she does all the time but never tires)
@thunderlord2200 You can use a toy. My dog LOVES to play fetch/tug-o-war..so sometimes instead of treats, her reward is me throwing a toy she likes and playing tug-o-war w/her to get it back. Since usually she is asked to drop the toy at my feet rather than me "fight" her for it. So maybe make different games ur dog likes into rewards. =)
ok my question is if i bring a puppy to my home would my other dog attack it? my dbig dog is 4 years old and she is turning fve, shes a pure bred german shepherd and i just found out we might bringing home another german shepherd puppy like the one you have in this video. and my 4 year old dog is agressive to other dogs, she'll go nuts on walks and pull when she sees dogs. How do i prevent her from getting agressive?
as I'm sitting writing this I've got 70 pounds of british bulldog being VERY british bulldog, jumping easily and getting over-exited. Seriously, its hard to see the keys through the moulted hairs covering the keyboard, and my dog is a big lump of difficult semi-stupid, slow-to learn difficult stubborness.
but I love the fucker and he loves me
he doesnt try to intimidate me and I dont try to intimidate him,
We had just recently adopted an aussie mix, who didn't just have a little jumping up problem, she would tackle you. This video was a HUGE help! thank you so much for giving us (in my opinion) the best clicker advice on the web!
I love these video and I am using a lot of them to train my 7 months old Amstaff gal. I do have a question that is really important to me since I can not find anyone in the area to help.
Where can I find videos where I can teach how to train her for conformation dog shows. Thanks...
My dog has the issue of jumping on me and nibbling at my feet 'a lot' he's a golden retriever so he's not little... He's very rough with his play and does not stop long enough for me to reward his decreased jump and biting behavior. Thence, making this difficult. I other thing about my down is that I've been training him while he is tied to his lease. I noticed you do not do this. Is this good or bad? It seems he runs away and loses interest in training and seeks other things when he's not tied.
I got a better way, if your dogs jumps on you, grab his paws, gime him a heck of a stomp on his back paws, make him cry, and then let him go...thats bitch will learn his lesson for sure....100% guaranteed...
@RoseGreyThoroughbred REALLY, my dog is pretty stubborn but he's also willing to please. How long have you been working on the clicker training? What kind of dog do you have? Does it matter what kind of breed he is? and sorry for the many questions but i really want to know. ^_^
@swordpetals We have officially been working on 'clicker training' for around 3 months. I decided to try it after my teacher assigned "Don't Shoot the Dog" by Karen Pryor. I love it! I am now an avid Kikopup fan and recomend her videos to everyone. My dog is a mix- she's got German Shepherd, Lab, and Greyhound in her and just turned 8, but that doesn't matter as far as training is concerned. This method can be used for any dog, even exotics in zoos, like lions! Feel free to ask anything! :D
I'm a fan of your videos and work and would like to ask what kind of treats you are feeding. I use self-made dry meat (turkey). I've been a bit worried about my puppy's weight doing all those exercises with him.
I love people who train like you. You are truly a Blessing to the canines and to anyone who watches your videos. God Bless you for sharing and helping to improve the treatment of animals. Love how you squeeled like an excited child and the fearful dog petter demo is also very helpful in teaching dogs not to react the wrong way to human emotions. Children often evoke excitement and bad behaviors in their dogs then parents wrongfully/harshly punish the dog for responding in a normal dog way.
you are amazing! i have this behavior in my pupy, its almost 4 months old amstaff, what im trying with it is not to bite me!!! but its too hard to even touch her without her biting, softly, but biting!
I want to ask: Once you have used up all your treats, or she's already had too many treats maybe, and the dog is still expecting the treat, how to deflect its attention not to jump then?
The dog can be very responsive to click+treat and then after the clicking session is over it may just go ahead with the prior behaviour because there's no longer anything to deflect it to do something else.
How to get past treating every time? That'd wind up being expensive and unhealthy for the puppy's diet.
I saw your videos. But is there a time where you can stop using treats? Or do you have to use treats forever? The dog I want to have gets fat easily, and it would be nice to have my dog behave on its own after training him.
I have one dog who jumps all day, jumps SO high. Loves jumping five feet up into the air. It's so amazing that people say, oh my that's amazing! So, should I really tell him not to jump? He doesn't jump ON people, just up into the air. It feels like if I told him to not jump, it would break his spirit.
Thank you, Emily, for demonstrating an "untrained" dog learning a new behavior versus your own dogs with 'learned" behaviors.....I can finally refer my students to Kikopup videos to reinforce what they've been shown & practiced in private lessons & class. I really enjoy working with adolescent/mature dogs with no training especially when adopted from shelter or a rescue. Please keep demostrating how the behavior is learned! C&T for you! Lyne C, CPDT, Tail Wagging Fun Dog Training, Inc.
My 60 pound dog has a high drive to jump on visitors and not even allow them in the doorway of the house. Food is not a strong enough of a motivator. Food makes him further stimulated and out-of-control. But I still like your tips here.
I love your videos! You make it look so easy! How would you "fix" this... If I get in my car to drive out of our gated yard, both my Bichon & Border Collie follow my vehicle. If I let my husband pull out and I walk out, they stay behind (they've been "shhhhed" a lot!). How do I train them to stay in the yard as the electric gate is closing & I'm in the vehicle?
im glad you did this video, as i am getting a dalmatian dog soon and i dont want her jumping up on any one, and i have lil kids as well that i dont want knocked over.
Awesome job as always! It is great to see you working with other peoples pups. You just need a red sports car and some leather boots and you can give Victoria a run for her money on tv ;)
Hey Kikopup! Love the video. The only problem is my dog jumps on other people and never jumps on anyone in the family! Should I explain to my friends what to do to encorage no jumping?
I love this video. I was having the hardest time teaching my dog to stop jumping, because everyone wanted to always pet him regardless of what I said. This technique will still let people show affection towards my dog, but in a much better way. I almost considered a prong collar since I was just so confused as to what I could do since the general population refused to listen to me.
Luckily, this video came in time! Thank you so much. Don't know how you don't have your own TV show yet.
Great video. I think it's the best I've ever seen about teaching not to jump up. I have one question though:
Do you think it's good in all situations not to allow the pet to jump on you if you have a toy? I always thought that is the thing they should be able to get excited about. I know if I would reinforce my dog not to get too excited about the toy, she would completely ignore it, which wouldn't be good, because I often teach her with toys(agility, tricks.. )
Oh, I didn't know about these "rules". Bummer! Oh well, Thanks for the other ideas. We'll try them, too. I also got a Manners Minder to see if that helps. I am in awe of you, your talents, and how much energy you must have to do all that you do! It's such a blessing to others. Thanks!
Love the video! Great ideas. If possible, would you show what to do when there are more people coming in, including kids, and perhaps someone coming in with a dog to visit, and bigger dogs who are very excitable. I realize that things are always different when you are video taping. And this obviously works with these dogs. I'm also wondering if there is an energy that people bring with them when they come into the room, as she tends to do this more with some than with others?
@azmauigirl You know the problem with youtube is that I cant have other people in the videos unless they sign... sigh.. the world is a stupid place sometimes... Sometimes putting a baby gate up, where you greet the guests, toss your dog treats for being calm, then when your guests have calmed down and so has the dog you can remove the gate.
@kikopup Have you considered printing out a simple waiver? People sign it to give permission, I believe that's all you need. Does YouTube work differently?
@kikopup hey ive got a problem with potty training
well my puppy does do poo in the toilet but she does wee anywhere in the house
it seems as if she is doing it on purpose what can i do?
other problem is ive started training her of lead but when ever she see's people she barks at them it is the same with lead aswell im scared one day theyll run and the dog runs after them cause
she is an olde thyme bulldog and incase she bites which i highly doubt but if she does it will hurt.
@azmauigirl Another tip in addition to kikopup's is, if your dog gets TOO aroused (he becomes too much to handle) when lots of people or a new dog comes through the door, move him into a different neutral room so he cannot see the guests entering or practice any unwanted behavior from the new triggers until all your guest have settle in. Throw treats in the room and hide some also so he's occupied. Let him out on lead and slowly introduce him to the guests. Reward for any calmness.
I love how he's so happy to work with you! I also like how it's now a reward to not jump up, he's wagging his tail the whole time when sitting or going into a down :D
What if you want your dog to learn to do behaviors that involve jumping AND at the same time you don't want then to pawn your to the ground every time you come through the dog?
one of your best videos, and I don't say that lightly!! if I only I had had this video 2 years ago, Holly was a nightmare for jumping up, she would do it ALL the time and do what I called "bopping" I would try and put a leash on her and she would launch at my face and hit my jaw a few times with her head!! she would do it over and over again, in the end after much training she is almost 100% with it, but she still jumps when she is scared but the excited jumping has more or less stopped.
Excellent Emily, what I really like about this is that you have explained what to do if the dog does jump up - and not just focus on a dog offering the desired behaviour - brilliant
Your amazing at this. You and dogs seem to connect so easily. I use a different tenique though, whenever the dog would jump, turn around, cross your arms and avoid them. This works great. I have not even thought about doing this. Looks simple, and easy for the dog especially. Thanks I will have to try this. I also think that it is great that you are using puppies
@sundaymorningsleeper haha, actually I was thinking that I SHOULD have used a "grown dog" as guess what? Its a lot harder when you have a 100 pound dog at the shelter that has not learned yet not to jump up! and in fact has practiced jumping up all its life so is good at it. I will need to make a sequel! (I know what you meant though- you meant using trained dogs!)
Awesome video. Thanks so much for posting this. This is the single biggest problem I have with my dog Sara and I just couldn't find a way to stop the jumping. This looks like a great solution.
Wow, those puppies caught on real fast! **********
I must confess, I'm one of those people who took joy in my dog jumping up on me. . . bad mommy. It's just that she was so choosy about who was jump worthy I felt like I was being mean. I know better now.
@tehrenberg No, if you think it terms of desirable and undesirable. YOU decide what behaviors you like. Just like jumping on the couch. ANOTHER important fact is that the no jumping up exercise is NOT GOOD for shy dogs! Because you want to encourage the dog to interact with people, and if they jump you can work on it later, at least they WANT to interact with someone.
@kikopup Thanks for saying this, because this is what my instincts told me, and why I didn't try to stop her (and maybe even encouraged her). Two years later, I am working on some self control, with OTHER people, not me. I still like it, and she only does it as a means of communication. For instance, when I come home after leaving her, no jumping - if I return after leaving her with someone else, she jumps up like, "Oh thank God you came back!!".
@kikopup great video! I totally agree about the shy dog thing. Jackson is pretty shy when it comes to new people, never aggressive, barky or biting or anything, just shy. He's weary about new people petting him, and would prefer to go and sniff them but wants to be ignored until he gets to know the person better! He loves you forever once he meets you once or twice so I don't discourage his excitement and jumping just because it doesn't happen very often... it actually shocks me when he doesit
@brittanyjadexo My chihuahua is the same exact way! She doesn't really jump though, but she will act exited to see new people and go sniff them etc., but will back away as soon as they make a move! When she does know someone and greets them, she crouches down and wags her tail and her ears go back. Kinda funny. We've been working on her shyness for a looong time.
@kikopup Yes, please make the sequel for big crazy dogs. It is a real problem. Our dog trainer tried to teach me to make the dog lie on a mat near the front door. Even if he could do this for--what, 5 seconds that lasts forever, when released he starts all over with the over-the-top exuberant greeting behavior. The leash does not help whatsoever.
Excellent method Emily:)! I have never heard of this method before. It makes so much sense too. Thanks for sharing:). I am in the process of creating my jumping video.

I really like your video and how you show what to do when they do jump up (ignore it).

Ju1cypear 1 year ago
I am going to try this with my little dachshund. She jumps alot. My other dogs don't.
Hope it helps!

Lovely puppies, they are really very good, the same as your training.

one of your best videos, and I don't say that lightly!! if I only I had had this video 2 years ago, Holly was a nightmare for jumping up, she would do it ALL the time and do what I called "bopping" I would try and put a leash on her and she would launch at my face and hit my jaw a few times with her head!! she would do it over and over again, in the end after much training she is almost 100% with it, but she still jumps when she is scared but the excited jumping has more or less stopped.

What cute puppies! I love this video! I always learn so much from you! You are just an amazing trainer!

I love that you use puppies rather than grown dogs. It isn't helpful to see a trained dog do something. It is better to see a crazy puppy!
sundaymorningsleeper 1 year ago 12
@sundaymorningsleeper haha, actually I was thinking that I SHOULD have used a "grown dog" as guess what? Its a lot harder when you have a 100 pound dog at the shelter that has not learned yet not to jump up! and in fact has practiced jumping up all its life so is good at it. I will need to make a sequel! (I know what you meant though- you meant using trained dogs!)

@kikopup Did you ever make the "Sequel"? I didn't do this soon enough, and now my 6 mo, 65 lb exuberant Golden boy is about to knock someone over ;-)

@katherfu same here! mine is knocking people over constantly!

I know better now.
tehrenberg 1 year ago 2
@tehrenberg No, if you think it terms of desirable and undesirable. YOU decide what behaviors you like. Just like jumping on the couch. ANOTHER important fact is that the no jumping up exercise is NOT GOOD for shy dogs! Because you want to encourage the dog to interact with people, and if they jump you can work on it later, at least they WANT to interact with someone.
kikopup 1 year ago 5
@kikopup Thanks for saying this, because this is what my instincts told me, and why I didn't try to stop her (and maybe even encouraged her). Two years later, I am working on some self control, with OTHER people, not me. I still like it, and she only does it as a means of communication. For instance, when I come home after leaving her, no jumping - if I return after leaving her with someone else, she jumps up like, "Oh thank God you came back!!".
tehrenberg 1 year ago
@kikopup great video! I totally agree about the shy dog thing. Jackson is pretty shy when it comes to new people, never aggressive, barky or biting or anything, just shy. He's weary about new people petting him, and would prefer to go and sniff them but wants to be ignored until he gets to know the person better! He loves you forever once he meets you once or twice so I don't discourage his excitement and jumping just because it doesn't happen very often... it actually shocks me when he doesit
brittanyjadexo 1 year ago

Happy Clicking!
