  • Brecker's sax is still the sound of the SNL band to me, some 28 years later.

  • @BandNerd3661 Yeah I was thinking maybe the chord changes as well.

  • I don't think it was, but was any of Brecker's playing written? I've watched this video a ton and have wondered what was on the stand in front of him because it looks like he refers to it quite a bit.

  • @tenorsax10

Perhaps just to refer to different sections of the song or maybe even the chords?

  • Never heard this before - it really is amazing :) could listen all night... but why are they playing in gazebos? I mean it's cool but... odd? Music and performances are out of this world :) But the stage is in a tent of its own...

  • @whiterobin nice, haha. My name is Bill and I play an ES 335. I"m sure you got that already.

  • IN Gadd we trust ! U.U, one of the best sax solo

  • If nothing else, check out Michael Brecker's solo at 2:17. This guy is one of the few truly transcendental musicians of the 20th century. And of course, Gadd and Stern are bad ass as always.

  • so good

  • shivers on my back!!!

  • 2011 ... after 15 years still one of my favorite CD's.

  • this recording of trains is michaels life put into music.

  • Steve Gadd makes those cymbals sound good. He is the cymbal...

  • These muscians make me glad to be alive.Michael goddamn Brecker and Steve Gadd.I love them dearly.Thank you so much for sharing this music.I truly appreciate the gift.

  • how can you play a Telecaster as your main guitar and be taken seriously?

  • @SteveHoweJeffBerlin never mind his a) haido and b) stage antics. He was ok on Jean-Pierre, actually his fines hour (we want miles)

  • @SteveHoweJeffBerlin Is actually a Yamaha Mike Stern signature model. Besides it's not what you've got it's what you do with it that counts.

  • @SteveHoweJeffBerlin for a start...you play with Blood, Sweat and Tears...Billy Cobham and Miles Davis.

  • @SteveHoweJeffBerlin

Mike Stern plays Yamaha, Pacifica 1511 MS model, wich loo like a Fender Telecast.

  • Haha, I love Stern's take on Micheal's FABULOUS squeals around 5:10 . So excellent!!

  • Whoopi Goldberg on Bass?

  • Few if any of us will have the opportunity for what we've done to be revered years after we leave this place. Michael Breckers playing will be marveled at for decades and there is no greater tribute the world can give to anyone.

  • Love it..... R.I.P. Michael Brecker.

  • Look at Mike and this OLD EWI. He was really none of a kind.

  • This is simply amazing!!!

    Playing from the heart...

Michael..........Michael... The best...With your music you will be alive for ever...

  • Ok, so 5:19-5:23 is pretty much the most amazing lick Ive ver heard.

  • Completely epic guitar fill at 1:49!!!

    Stern is awesome!

  • Daryl Jones on bass too... Mike Stern on guitar

  • What is this, I don't even...

  • einfach genial !!!

  • I´ll never get tired of listenning to this video, it is good we´ve had people like MR BRECKER, every time that sax solo is played somewhere, the world becomes a better place.

    Esto es hermoso.

  • the look to mike stern @ 0:55... legend.

  • BLOW MINDS WITH MB NOT WITH BOMBS

  • Brecker just being the best Brecker ever.....I don't give a damn if you like metal, klezmer, polka, hip hop....Brecker's solo is RIVETING!

  • almost like the solo of his lifetime - i mean Mike Stern!

  • It's awesome how he incorporates Delta City Blues from 3:15 . Perfect fit!

  • @CaresserOfThePale Ha ! I was so impressed the first time I heard it, it fits in so well !

  • R.I.P.

    Great Musician...

  • Steve Gadd mauvais...

MDR !!

  • I love this and can't get enough of it, but one things gets me. Why is Mike Stern further back in the mix? I think he should be as clear as Brecker on his solo. I think that would add a ton to the vid. But I love it!!

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for that record !!! - Master Brecker is not longer with us, but this music greatful. - Listen to his Solo, and look the way he is in touch with mike stern ...

  • Mr. Brecker, the MASTER!

I've been listening to this for hours before being tired! And tired isnt the right word!

  • Sorry

Larry Carlton is good but never "ma tasse de thé".

  • what's the first thing he's playing???

  • Its called an ewi(electronic wind instrument0

  • Tom Scott plays a similar instrument but its called a lyricon

  • This is a very early prototype of the Steinerphone invented by Neil Steiner. He eventually sold the technology to Akai and it was reworked and updated then marketed as the EWI. Today's version is more streamlined and has the sounds built in eliminating the need for external modules. A very hard instrument to master as there are no moving keys, but of course Brecker did master it!!

  • That reed has to be dead after that amazing solo. What is left to play after that?

  • That reed was probably shivering in extacy for a long time after that. "wow.. who made me vibrate like that THAT??!"

  • ... another tune ;)

  • Pure Magic!!!

    Antonio from France !

  • holy..........wow...........

  • I've been listening to Michael play for over 30 years & he still never ceases to strike me with jaw dropping awe inspiring amazement everytime I hear him play on something like this...what a phenomenal talent this man was!! Michael, thank you for everything you've given all of us...miss you bud....

  • @musicianfromcaliforn so many people missing Brecker. Saludos desde Mexico.

  • @musicianfromcaliforn

    completely i agree with you!

    they are great!

but in particoular Mike is a real phenomeno ( not was, he lives 4ever &ever!)

    joe from italy

  • amazing!!!!!

  • I like this song much I dunno why I just do..

  • Great video, thanx.

    RIP Michael.

  • Awesome stuff!!

  • those sax bends at 3:15... so good!

  • The first phrase of notes on the tenor man, that's all he needed to play. That's all he needed and that would have been the end of the song. That's mind blowing.

  • I know, that's relative, but in my opinion, he was the best...

  • Simply the best musician ever, everywhere, in the past, present and maybe future. Full of... Everything. Pathos.

  • that is so relative men!!

  • Mike's my favorite tenor player and I definitely miss his playing. However, "best musician ever, everywhere, in the past, present and maybe future" is a big reach. Two words: ART TATUM.

  • My piano player told me: Do u know how did we call him ? (Tatum)

    GOD !

  • This concert was 2005

  • Comment removed

  • awesome!

  • Lol '86? There is a Mac on a desk...

  • It's not '86 It's when Steps Ahead did their reunion tour, late nintys early 2000's...not sure

  • Steve Gadd definitely didn't have grey hair in the 90s, if that says anything.

  • At 5:00 it sounds like my sax teacher when I didn't practice...

  • Back in 80's I listened this tune over and over again. I could not believe I missed this concert. Michael Breaker is truly amazing!

  • Is that Daryl Jones?

  • this guys are a Monsters

  • doesnt get any better than this!!!

  • is the eric clapton´s drumer? or not?

  • This is 'world-renowned' drummer Steve Gadd. He may well have been hired by Eric Clapton, at some point. If you are Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Elton John or anyone else in their league and you need a top-tier drummer, you hire Gadd if he is available.

  • Yea for some stuff.

  • Anyone know where i could get the score/music for this song? =]

  • Solo do Brecker é inspirador. Demais.

Business is business ! A quoi ça rime ?

  • Well miss you mike........

  • And, guitarists in Jazz were always rhythm first.

  • It's always the guys who can't play that complain. They're the same guys that said Miles is selling out 'cause he recorded 'Someday My Prince Will Come' ! Or, later, went electric and covered 'Time After Time' !

  • Please masturbate elsewhere.

  • this is the best line up .. especially with darryl on bass... highly underrated.. god everyone in this band is so musically gifted its ashamed the whole world can't see how they can make any song sound so good . .. just this line up tho.. the one with steve smith doesn't sound as good... this was just a great concert and beriut at this show was the best version by far. michael puts his whole heart into this song and gadd has such a great groove during his solo... rip michael

  • Crazy ! Mike Stern looks so happy when he's playing !!

Michael Brecker will always be a legend !

  • No- the point is-if no guitarist were there you wouldn't notice it-because it's marimba jazz! Bass is largely relegated to a supporting role as well- but usually guitar isn't considered part of the rhythm section- this vibe/key goddess is a tool- and so are you!-kind of cool electro-vibe rig tho'-he's still a bitch-but really i'm talking about the other video-Actual lead here but why do cheesion players use so much pedal? It's always chorused with flange-neato! McLaughlin-1 pedal used last time

  • mike stern is so annoying in this FLAME ME FLAME ME DO IT DO IT NOW

  • You probably find a lot great players annoying. By the way...I was looking for your video on the site and some how missed it?

  • Yeah I didn't see yours either- but I'm sure it's very homoerotic-and why is this guitarist even there?

  • I guess that it's a rhetorical question...like "why is any guitarist there?" And I've got your "homoerotic" right here pal!!! You fudge packin pirate!!!

  • mike stern is always annoying to me, he always play the same!

  • What kind of EWI - EVI is Brecker playing?

    It looks different.

  • The RAD MIDI EWI by Nyle Steiner.

  • I've always loved this song.

WOW...Steve Gadd totally re-invented the groove on this song as only HE can.

Michael Brecker...awesome as always (RIP)You are seriously missed.

Mike Stern gets all fired up....

    Great Vid!!!

Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • from 4:59 to 5:20, i don't know about you guys, but get the feel of the intensity that trane had is his later years. RIP Brecker!

  • The shot of the late Michael at 9:41 says it all.

Enjoyment, fun and a job well done!

  • At 3:13 is the drummer holding four sticks too? He's been watching Mainieri too much!

  • umm..not to be a dick but I think Steve Gadd was playing with 4 sticks when Manieri was in diapers??

  • Every solo Brecker has ever played, someone will say thats the best sax solo they ever heard. He was THAT good. And how about my friend and Berklee classmate Mike Stern's guitar solo? DEAR LORD! Gadd is Gadd. He's also one of a kind. Of special interest is Brecker's playing with Pat Metheny with Bill Stewart on drums. Also, get the DVD of Retrn of the Brecker Brothers in Spain with Mike Stern and Dennis Chambers on drums. Last song is one of the best guitar solos I ever heard.

  • dotadee my friend,i have watched this many times now, it just gets better everytime i here it, it is by far the best sax i have ever heard, i have now got it io cd, and can listen to it anytime night or day.

  • Where did you get the CD of this? It's amazing.

  • Step Ahead "Live in Japan-1986"

    Song title - "Trains"

  • It is obvious from the appearance of Brecker and Gadd that this is not '1986'.

  • The video is from the early 2000's However the question I was answering was, "Where can I hear this music...?" and my answer was "Step Ahead-Live in Tokyo 1986" Song Title - Trains. You could also try the Original recording, "Step Ahead - Magnetic"

  • you need to listen to more sax then.

  • had to watch it again, to make shure i was not dreaming, i am pretty speachless, this is a special guy, playing what can only be discribed as magic, before our eyes

  • i have never heard someone play sax like that before, that just blows me away, this goes way beyond brilliant. thanks.

  • i cant stop listing to this

  • rip Michael Brecker

  • I LOVE Steve Gadd's playing in general. But I have to say, he should have stuck with Peter Erskine's original version on the drums. Steve is way to stiff on the tune and it doesn't sound like he knows the breaks all that well. Still kudos on a great overall performance for the band.

  • This one really gets me whenever I listen to it (which is often). Michael expresses "LIFE" so beautifully in this solo that it makes his absence that much harder. This was indeed a rare and special and spiritual moment for MB and all the guys in the band. Miss you Michael!!

  • well put man

  • @RussPaladino i was just saying that MB is expressing his love for life through his solo while watching this vid... then i saw your comment! i'm glad to meet other people who hear what i hear in MBs playing

  • @songsmadeforyou - yeah man.....I can honestly say I never heard him play something that wasn't compelling, but at this show he was at his greatest. He set the bar so high, both in terms of technique AND emotional honesty. Still can't imagine we'll never hear anything new. Thank God for all of these posts. MB is still a part of my life and will always be an inspiration.

  • @RussPaladino another reason why MB was able to be so expressive and inspiring is because of the all the talented musicians that gave him the freedom to go to his limit - he sounds great playing with a high school band i'm sure, but here he's able to think outside the box and the band will follow

  • Wow Michael, what a God. RIP

  • Daryl Jones on electric bass, Mike Mainieri, vibes, Mike Stern, guitar, Steve Gadd, drums, Michael Brecker (RIP), on EWI and Tenor. This is Music!

  • don't forget Adam Holzman on Keyboards, he's in this party band & party tent to

  • agree.

    Music!

  • Whats with all the spam on a Michael Brecker video? lol

  • YEAH

  • RIP Michael, only the good die young, we sure miss you.

  • whose the guitarist?

  • He's Mike Stern

  • Perfection. Not much else to say.

    Miss ya Mike.

  • I miss Don Grolnick.

  • yeah, I do too bud. He was really something.

  • Correction -It WAS Victor Bailey

  • on the original

  • I miss Michael Brecker.

  • You already wrote that once. It wasnt funny the first time.

  • I was talking to JDawgWig

  • He's fabulous, he can play all the instruments at the same time ! Seriously, I don't know why you continue posting these stuping bad-joke comments, it has no sense, but if you like to treat people like assholes, OK, we're here for this, feel free to treat people as idiots, you have a big crew which responds to your stupid comments (which is what you are looking for, nah ?) you must have no friends to be in need of such conversation via Youtube comments ! ...

  • Well, it wouldn't be a true Youtube comment section if we didn't have the stereotypical 13 year old and his "gay" tirade.

Mike Stern was outstanding! Great video - thanks!

  • You are a really a happy person, and I am happy too. Thank you, I am sending positive energy to you as I am typing this, peace, love, happiness, joy. these are also all the things that I feel when I hear this man play the sax.

  • Brecker is so great, I put him in the top 1% of the greats of Jazz players!

  • Bro don't be lame please

  • steve gadd 100 %

  • Ouch, Eliane Elias looked better in her heyday! LOL!

Seriously, who's on keys here? (To the smart guys: please don't answer "Al Gore"!)

  • Ok, I thought by "level", you meant we could compare them. No problem :)

  • Machael Brecker was unique on the level of Miles! Sad they are both gone!!!!!

  • I don't think we can compare these 2 kings.... they didn't play in the same place

  • I'm not comparing, just saying that you don't get them any better!

  • Great video. But not pickin up on the al gore comments at all.

  • it dont get any better than this. mike is king.

  • BEST video on youtube!!!

  • Mike is really fuck

  • isn't that al gore on drums ?

    he invented the internet

  • Sorry, search on the Net this group and you will se pictures of this concert and a text which confirms it is Steve Gadd. But if you can't stand to be wrong, Ok, ...
