I don't think it was, but was any of Brecker's playing written? I've watched this video a ton and have wondered what was on the stand in front of him because it looks like he refers to it quite a bit.
Never heard this before - it really is amazing :) could listen all night... but why are they playing in gazebos? I mean it's cool but... odd? Music and performances are out of this world :) But the stage is in a tent of its own...
If nothing else, check out Michael Brecker's solo at 2:17. This guy is one of the few truly transcendental musicians of the 20th century. And of course, Gadd and Stern are bad ass as always.
These muscians make me glad to be alive.Michael goddamn Brecker and Steve Gadd.I love them dearly.Thank you so much for sharing this music.I truly appreciate the gift.

This is a very early prototype of the Steinerphone invented by Neil Steiner. He eventually sold the technology to Akai and it was reworked and updated then marketed as the EWI. Today's version is more streamlined and has the sounds built in eliminating the need for external modules. A very hard instrument to master as there are no moving keys, but of course Brecker did master it!!
I've been listening to Michael play for over 30 years & he still never ceases to strike me with jaw dropping awe inspiring amazement everytime I hear him play on something like this...what a phenomenal talent this man was!! Michael, thank you for everything you've given all of us...miss you bud....

No- the point is-if no guitarist were there you wouldn't notice it-because it's marimba jazz! Bass is largely relegated to a supporting role as well- but usually guitar isn't considered part of the rhythm section- this vibe/key goddess is a tool- and so are you!-kind of cool electro-vibe rig tho'-he's still a bitch-but really i'm talking about the other video-Actual lead here but why do cheesion players use so much pedal? It's always chorused with flange-neato! McLaughlin-1 pedal used last time
I guess that it's a rhetorical question...like "why is any guitarist there?" And I've got your "homoerotic" right here pal!!! You fudge packin pirate!!!

I LOVE Steve Gadd's playing in general. But I have to say, he should have stuck with Peter Erskine's original version on the drums. Steve is way to stiff on the tune and it doesn't sound like he knows the breaks all that well. Still kudos on a great overall performance for the band.
This one really gets me whenever I listen to it (which is often). Michael expresses "LIFE" so beautifully in this solo that it makes his absence that much harder. This was indeed a rare and special and spiritual moment for MB and all the guys in the band. Miss you Michael!!
@RussPaladino i was just saying that MB is expressing his love for life through his solo while watching this vid... then i saw your comment! i'm glad to meet other people who hear what i hear in MBs playing
@songsmadeforyou - yeah man.....I can honestly say I never heard him play something that wasn't compelling, but at this show he was at his greatest. He set the bar so high, both in terms of technique AND emotional honesty. Still can't imagine we'll never hear anything new. Thank God for all of these posts. MB is still a part of my life and will always be an inspiration.
@RussPaladino another reason why MB was able to be so expressive and inspiring is because of the all the talented musicians that gave him the freedom to go to his limit - he sounds great playing with a high school band i'm sure, but here he's able to think outside the box and the band will follow
He's fabulous, he can play all the instruments at the same time ! Seriously, I don't know why you continue posting these stuping bad-joke comments, it has no sense, but if you like to treat people like assholes, OK, we're here for this, feel free to treat people as idiots, you have a big crew which responds to your stupid comments (which is what you are looking for, nah ?) you must have no friends to be in need of such conversation via Youtube comments ! ...
You are a really a happy person, and I am happy too. Thank you, I am sending positive energy to you as I am typing this, peace, love, happiness, joy. these are also all the things that I feel when I hear this man play the sax.
Sorry, search on the Net this group and you will se pictures of this concert and a text which confirms it is Steve Gadd. But if you can't stand to be wrong, Ok, ...
Brecker's sax is still the sound of the SNL band to me, some 28 years later.

He's fabulous, he can play all the instruments at the same time ! Seriously, I don't know why you continue posting these stuping bad-joke comments, it has no sense, but if you like to treat people like assholes, OK, we're here for this, feel free to treat people as idiots, you have a big crew which responds to your stupid comments (which is what you are looking for, nah ?) you must have no friends to be in need of such conversation via Youtube comments ! ...
lou2cv 3 years ago
Well, it wouldn't be a true Youtube comment section if we didn't have the stereotypical 13 year old and his "gay" tirade.
Mike Stern was outstanding! Great video - thanks!

Machael Brecker was unique on the level of Miles! Sad they are both gone!!!!!
