Its not that hard to get to Lieutenant since after 4 yrs (assuming no hiccups), one should/could be the rank of O-3. Its possible to be a 36 yr old lieutenant with him possibly enlisting before commissioning. Its probably that the landed being an instructor since there is shore duty requirements roughly around the 5yr mark of a comissioned officer. Its a pretty respectable shore duty post since you are at the academy compared to nrotc or ocs.

@IoSonoUomo No, Captain is an O-6, and that is pretty far up in the Navy, and getting to the rank of Lieutenant is harder than it seems, also he is an instructor, and i bet when you have that job promotions are hard to come by
