I still can never decide which film was more heartrending - Schindler's List, because it shows the sheer horror of the Holocaust, or The Pianist, because it shows the absolute and terrible pain of a transcendent, beautiful art's slow deterioration and inhibition. I will never understand the Holocaust, ever. But neither can I understand what it must be like to have your sole creative freedom taken away.
