That's the plan - there's a Japanese breakers up the road and they've got a stack of FTOs with (apparently) sweet motors.
The east asian 6A12 Galant was named the VR-M and was apparently a hot seller, but any info I can find on it is in Cantonese - even translated it's not much use.
And believe me, after putting up with the asthmatic 4G63 even my dad's diesel Renault feels fast. A 6A12 will feel like a Bugatti Veyron. =)
Once again, thanks very much for the info. Really appreciate it.
Dude, out of curiosity, do you know the 0-60 time on this car?
I have a UK-spec 8G Galant (2002) and I want to put one of these awesome engines in it. The 8G and the 7G weigh kinda the same so I wanted to get an idea of the acceleration. I'm guessing probably sub-10 seconds but if you could give me a number it would be much appreciated.
@Strike86 hey, I don't think the 0-60mph time on the VX-R is overly quick, it sounds quicker than it actually is. My 6G VR-4 is much quicker but feels slower because it's super quiet. I would say 0-60mph in 7-7.5 seconds. What engine is your in your 8G, the 2.5 V6 I hope? The 2.5 has more torque for getting off the line but runs out of puff quite quickly and you can tell it has less hp when it doesn't go better at 5000-6000rpm where the MIVEC 2.0 only starts picking up.
Unfortunately the engine in my car at the moment is a 4G63 SOHC (131bhp) - hence the reason for the possible swap. While the 2.5 V6 isn't exactly rare in the UK I wanted something a little bit more unique, and something that pulls better at the top end. Low end torque is fine for everyday useability but disappointing when you thrash it and discover it hasn't got much more to give.
From what I've heard the 2.0 is also just as refined at low speeds, is this true?
@Strike86 Yeah the 2.0 V6 is fine at low speeds. Go find a crashed FTO and fit the engine/gearbox into the Galant, the 8G actually came out factory with the 6A12 MIVEC in some Asian markets such as Thailand and Hong Kong, but irionically never in Japan which would have made its way to New Zealand, Australia and the UK as a grey import. I think the 2.0 might be a little underpowered in the 8G, it's about 50kgs heavier than the 7G and even then I found the 7G body was just a little heavy.
@KAWAIIGIFT MIVEC has a subtle cam switchover rather than the more harsh VTEC from Honda. It certainly is a MIVEC model, if you look closely you'll see the 8000rpm redline which the non-MIVEC engines don't have. It's a MIVEC-MD engine which means it disables the front bank of cylinders when not required.
@20vtrueno yep, however it was almost too complicated for its own good. You would noticeably feel the MD kicking in and out sometimes as your just coasting along and needed to accelerate ever so slightly. It was good for idling at lights though.
@te71se i should guess it does save fuel though. i'd love to own something like an FTO but with the price of petrol in the UK, I need to be able to save petrol if i cruise instead of going fast.
this is the shark look right??

@djkasdjkasdjdjdj nah the shark looking one is the 8th gen Galant, this is the 7th gen early-mid 90s model.

@te71se right, the 1990's and 2001 galant r the best, the amrican version sucks!!

@te71se thats so DAMN clever. So it would sort of be three cylinders if you were driving around economy-style?
