I used to have 40 colonies back home..in the Philippines..and I went back to United states for a year and my bee keeper lost them all...I am going to start again...I started only 2 colonies before and within 2 years we split them in to 40 colonies.they have plenty of food where we are...
i have also 1 colony here in my backyard but i have the Apis cerena indica, the native honey where u can
see it in those tropical country, very xciting to keep the said bees because thier nature is wild and aggresive, i do checking thier hive without wearing any protections,
Contact your local extension agent for more information. Or, your area may be lucky enough to have a beekeeping association - beekeepers in general are veyr generous in sharing info and helping newbies get started.
I don't know your type of bees but here in Africa I won't go near my beehives without my smoker. No gear will work properly against angry honeybees. They will find a way in.
SC bees, I suppose. I spent two years helping an 80+ year old man who had been doing it forever.
I used to think he was off his rocker for not wearing a suit, but soon I found myself doing it on occassion. You just have to notice how the bees are acting, but mostly how they react to you.
Mr. Tiller's famous words were, "Aw boys, these bees aren't very active, let's not fuss with those suits" At which point I proceeded to shove my can full of corn husks and smoke the shit out of 'em.

You are part of the problem, calling beekeeping a Hobby! When you get tired of a hobby, you can usually put it in a cardboard box and put it under your bed. Having bees is certainly a custodialship.
Just because he called it a hobby doesn't mean that he would dispose of them at the drop of a hat. For your information, a hobby is defined as an activity pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a primary occupation. Self-righteous ass.

I didnt say anything about anyone disposing of bees. I have been a beekeeper for over 30 years and the is a lot of work and pain working with bees. The comment of beekeeping not being a hobby came out of "Beeculture Magazine." I stick by my opinion.

You're using too much smoke on those bees.
A couple of squirts is enough, if at all.
Some people don't even use it., especially if you're wearing the gear.
