positioning is classic - high hat shouldnt be so low, and maybe should be weaker than what most people like ..this drummer hit the snare wit his stick reversed -- that helps a little too ..
hey, im a drummer and our band is gonna make a demo or ep soon and i need some mics, and you seem like a genius with this, so what would be a good pack of mics for not a whole lot of money and where could i get them.. i was on guitar centers site and saw some stuff, but im not sure if there are better sites with better stuff for less or what.. i dont really know anything about mics so any help from you or people reading would be great. Thanks
@masterdrummer19 many sets are good enough but need some help...... i like the equation - although the condesers are quite nasty. i would suggest you buy a set that seem nice and sound good - than record with it - and than add abetter mic for what ever sound worse, so slowly you can upgrade to a good collection . I.e if you take the Equations- buy 2 decent overheads like Rode Or MXL. by the way -MXL mics are cheap and the rock - so you can make a kit of your own...
The sm-57 is the best sounding on snare. Beta has awful presence, md-441 probably is the flatter mic and after it you can here a small presence of sm-57. U87 sounds good also, but 414 does not.
@jimmah01 another point is a great drummer that know how strong to hit with each hand. notice that he use a reversed stick on high hat. other thing is having the right drums- a LOUD snare and a cool high hat.
@faderfab - I wouldn't go so far as to say it sounded like crap, but I personally prefer a dampened thud to that hollow ring. It sounds like he has the skin stretched really tight. It's all a matter of taste, which is why drummers often bring their own snares.
@deadbirdsings Yea its really resonant. Sorry about that comment. I was a little thick those many months ago. Maybe not my taste in snare but I hate to dampend snares. Have you tried double miking the top and phase shift the other to cancel out the ring. Works really well in my experiments.
@freestylefilmsinc You can choose more directional mics, cardioid or hyper/supercardioids. you can put the microphone deeper into the snare drum( but thats risky ) or you can just choose the mic which bleeding sound the best! sometimes its part of the caracther of the sound of the whole kit.
If it were me, once I'd found out you needed to change preamps, I'd have gone back and used the same one for every mic. Otherwise, there's no telling how much the preamp contributed to the difference. Also, the Neumann, being somewhat farther back, picked up a lot of 'snare' sound and hihat that the other--closely spaced--mics did not. Not a very fair comparison...although I'd expect the Neumann to have better quality regardless.
@jakdedert - That's a valid point. On the bass drum mic shootout, I noticed he placed the Sennheiser on the outside of the drum, while the others were placed inside. I thought the Sennheiser sounded best, but I'm sure the other mics would've sounded quite a bit different and possibly better had they been put in the same position.
You should defintaly have put some other Neumanns in there, I think it's too bad you don't have more mics. But of cource, that would be expensive. Thanks for the vid!
The only one I like is the U87. I like a ev n/d 357 which is discontinued. I have a Shure beta 52 on the kick and two CAD gxl2200 as OH. Cheap Audio-technica on the hi hats. This is my best option for now. I normally have just one CAD gxl2400 for OH and a Shure beta 52 for kick. There are a lot of good options for great drum sounds. -PK
@Buhzie15 Hey we did it for you :) in fact its realy somthing that will rarely happen . but sometimes thats the sound you look for . a good drummer wont hit it if its positioned well. you could protect it wit a foam pop filter.. or just use any bright LDC mic that cost a litle less...

@namniekib I find it funny that you go for the more or less dull mics. Sm57 and 441 are definently only useable if you also have a mic on the bottom, unless you do extreme metal. the beta for an example feels more like it's going to break through a mix.
@prindal1,I actually don't mic my snare drum as shown in the video.I aim the mic at the shell about 4-6 inches away and in line with the snare wires. Also my snare is 5x14,not 6.5x14 as shown in the video. The way it's set up here, yeah it's pretty dull.
It's amazing how with the U87 the drum sound just opens up and breathes!

How do you isolate the snare so well? I use a 57 in almost the same position as you, and I get so much bleed from the hats. Any help would be nice!

I really don't understand how you got so little hi-hat bleed. I've read your explanation but still it's just ridiculous..

well well .. you need to record the bottom head as well... that's what makes my really brilliant snare sounds ;)

I for one, use the Beta 58 on my snare. i feel it gives a lot more character to it than the tradition sm57 set-up
