True, american roads and canadian roads have about the same difficulty in the winter, although because of your population density and lower general stance in the world i would say that some of our roads would be equally as much harder in the winter as yours are easier... I've probably driven more cars in five years than you have in 20 years and obviously I have a license. And skills do play a roll when one loses control. I don't know if you've ever done any drifting in your life but it helps you learn how to react when you lose control. Your chances are much higher to regain control...even on ice...for fuck's sake..go find an ice patch in an empty parking lot and practice for an hour...you'll get the hang of it.

(a) a superior driver wouldnt loose control, be that taking it MUCH slower, as the conditions call for, or not even driving if the conditions are so bad. (b) Once control is lost a skillfull or intelligent driver would realize the value of steering and not lock up his breaks, trying to regain control through wheel alignment. (c) a driver that does lock his breaks should remember a universal rule about NOT LOCKING YOUR BRAKES.
