I was reading an article in "Georgia Backroads" about Blind Willie McTell........really cool. This is of course, Bob Dylan's song written about him........love it.
@boru1982 If you said Leonard Cohen it'd be true. Dylan never cared about the sound, it's all about songs and not production. As Eric Clapton said, who used to be session guitarist for Dylan: "You really have to focus cause you might just get one take before recording". It's naked and raw, unlike most of the artists who cover Dylan, bar Hendrix's Watchtower. And did you ever ask yourself how come so many people cover his songs? Yeah, probably cause he's so bad! Lol at your comment man!
@666cfc Do I need to check it? Oh,looks like I do after your last comment. I'll leave you to decide which word(s) are misspelt Einstein. And who would want to argue with someone that uses 'lol'!? LOL
This song is drenched in irony. There's something about this ingredient that takes a song to another place and time. Irony is the monosodium glutamate of writing.
@petrewoods yes, this is a derivative of the "st. james infirmary blues".dylan turned it to a "st. james hotel" in one of his most colorful lyrics -> bootleg series 1-3.
hearing this song the first time made tears runs, dunno why, its just did. Prbably the best folk/dedication song for america to me really. i just love the energy that bobs bringing forth.
@boru1982 It is very common in folk for melodies, stories, and ideas to be passed from one musician to the next."This land is your land" by woody guthrie was taken from an old gospel song melody. Classical music elaborated on old folk melodies. You should know musicians take previously composed melodies and put their own twist on it and call it "inspiration" Every musician you've ever heard has done this to some extent. I'm grateful Dylan took this melody and wrote his brilliant poetry over it
YES. And : Only Bob Dylan can write such a wonderful song, beautyfully played by him and one of greatest guitarist of the XX century, and leave it off an album...
@Dominum No he didn't, Knopfler only produced the album that this song was supposed to appear on (Infidels) he had nothing to do with the songs writing process,Dylan wrote it by himself.
@Dominum The Guardian I think I'll pass on that thank you. I have no time for newspapers. Knopfler played 12 string guitar on the song but he didn't actually help write it.
I'm not going to argue with you, cause It's apparently futile. You don't have time for newspapers, so I'm quite sceptic regarding your resources. You probably don't know what resources is. So, whatever.
@41BobDylan apparently it's not even knopfler playing guitar, read somewhere he had left the session by the time this was recorded but cant remember for the life of me who is actually playing guitar
Well...... You Tube has taken my favorite video off their site. A copywriting problem??? I hope some one can repost this version with just Dylan on piano & Knopfler on guitar.
most of the dylan links on u2b i once bookmarked are gone or "not available in your country" (i.e. germany).
this is ridiculous 1) because dylan's music is not dependant of any country, it stands on its own (feet), worldwide
2) if those (idiots) who are responsible for this kind of censorship think i didn't ever buy - my money - one single dylan album, i can tell them they are completely wrong. that's because...
3) a dylan afficionado like me does even pay before listening.
Superb Flawless Lament/Ode! Thank You Mr. Dylan. I could listen to this 100 times. A history lesson. This is an old song that Bob has rearranged as he most tenderly does, but does anyone know who wrote the original song?
He didn't rearange it. it was written by Bob Dylan. Should have been on the album "Infidels" in 83, but didn't make it on the record. The song was later found on the bootleg series.
Dylan is playing the piano, and Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) joined him on a 12 string guitar for this marvelous piece of music.
It's not well known because Bob never put it on an album. He didn't think it did Blind Willie McTell justice. It's my favourite. I love this song so much.
Beautiful lyrics. I thought it was a typo when it said this song was from 1983, it sounds so much like his best early work. I guess that's just a testament to Dylan's enduring talent.
"Born William Samuel McTell in 1901, Blind Willie lost his sight in late childhood, yet earned the status as one of the most accomplished guitarists and lyrical storytellers in Blues history.
(...)
While few of his recordings ever earned mainstream popularity, his influence on the modern music and art scene is widely known. His songs (Statesboro Blues, Broke Down Engine Blues, etc...) have been recorded by famous artists such as the Allman Brothers, Taj Mahal and others. "
you ve said the most brilliand thing i ve ever heard about bob dylan. i hope he s going to be infinite ,counting on wheather we can be that intelligent to follow such moral leaders or not
theres a part in his book where he has shown some lines to bono and he thinks they are not worthy enough or they are too close to what people expect of bob dylan so he puts them away in a drawer to keep the others warmand bono is flabbergasted / dumbfounded when he reads the lines because he cant believe that he would be throwing them away.
This is undoubtedly one of his top three or four compositions and for Dylan with his stunning catalog, that is amazing. The last verse alone is one of the most powerful things he's written. It is mind-boggling to think Dylan himself didn't think this work, which many consider a masterpiece, to be worthy of releasing when he first recorded it.
I'm Josh, and it's all a matter of opinion, some might argue it's pressing on or Isis, One more cup of coffee, or It's alright ma- None of those choices would be wrong, but they'd still be choices.
This incredible and wonderful song was made with only Bob Dylan on piano and Mark Knopfler on the acoustic guitar. Bob Dylan refused to see this song released because of disagreement between him and Knopfler during recording sessions.
